Nasr ed-Din Hoja’s sayings are one of the best tales’ book in the tradition of crazy saints”. They are also very representative of Turkish humour, always fond of nonsense. I reproduced a short story showing that at this time, Kurdish was a common language in Anatolia, and that even the name of Kurdistan was not a taboo. What is interesting from a historical point of view, is that the tale indicates that man could live by teaching this language, and then that some people wished to learn it. Why ? In the anecdote, it is for trade. So we could guess that the interest for learning a language had always been the same one : economical, buiseness, or for a job. So with the raising of Southern Kurdistan state, perhaps Kurdish courses will increase in Turkey, even for Turks ! 🙂
WORD AND THING”Nasr Eddin Hoja, wanted to gain a few money. He decided to give Kurdish courses, though he knew only few words of this language.
His first pupil is a trader who has to go to Kurdistan for his own buiseness.
– Let me teach at first useful words for my travel. How do you say “hot soup”, for example, for I will stay at inn ?
– Hot soup is “arsh” answered Nasr Eddin without any hesitation.
– What ? replied the pupil, with surprise, only one word for telling “hot soup !” I would be curious to know how you say “cold soup !”
РThere is no word for that, answered Nasr Edd̨n.
– Why ?
– Because Kurds dislike to eat cold soup.”
(NB : I don’t find any Kurdish word like Ars or Ers, for telling a meal. Perhaps Hoja stole it from another language… or invented it !
by The way while his name com from Arabic word,however his name in kurdish spell this way”Xace Nesredin or Mella Nesredin” .the above name u mention “Nasr ed-Din Hoja” smell deeply Turkish.
The “historical” Nasr Ed-Dîn Hoja was a Turk from Akshehir, living around 1284, though many people later borrowed him for their own folklore.
I think “Pilling†you missing point here, I am not talking about his ethnic background of Xace Nesredin, while is no doubt his name come from Arabic (pan-Islamic word), however every culture and language have its way to call. In Kurdish we don’t call Hoja(even though words is Turkish-also whole things such as, history facts publish in turkey is totally misleading, For Turks everything is Turk, if it has a value.) the correct way to say is ” Xace” as well as his name as Nesredin, we have a lot foreign word that in way we calling them is totally different than their origin,. I am not sure how much you know about Kurdish literacy and language?
Why should I spell a Turkish name in Kurdish while I’m writing in English ? If I write Kurdish, I spell a name in Kurdish, but I write in English, then “Hoja” is the correct spelling.
You using Turkish spelling and vocabulary with English therefore it is another effort to Turkish culture. Or it seems you may have been heavily influenced by Turkish culture.

By the way if I have written it in Turkish it would be “Nesreddin Hoca”, you don’t seem to have a great knowledge of Turkish spelling.
And in Kurdish it is Xoce, not Xace. You don’t seem to have a great knowledge of Kurdish spelling, also.
I don’t think so, so you are French, well that is clear things up, and I think the word Hoja is just you directly got from Turkish Trace, since “c” is not easily spelled in French u replaced by “j”
Plus in Turkish the word such as “master†or “sir†like ‘Hoca” come end name, therefore u just copy it from Turkish, that is no question about that so don’t challenge me, you should change that silly mistake and admit is wrong. The definition of word is meaning Masters in Kurdish we called “Mamusta” or “Maemusteâ€, as I believe Xace or Xoce is no Kurdish, however it had been used for a person who have knowledge or have superiors powers, such as lord.
And to my knowledge the definition of French and Arabs are the same because they are stupid
