ERBIL, July 10 (AKnews) – Energy giant GE has signed a contract with Mass Global investment company in the Kurdistan Region to supply two steam turbines in Erbil to increase the efficiency and output of the city's power plant.

The turbines will be used to convert the plant from simple to combined-cycle operation to increase output by 500 megawatts, which will be enough for 100,000 households.

Mass Global chairman told Trade Arabia: “Mass Global continues to be at the forefront of meeting the power requirements of the Kurdistan Iraq region.”

GE Energy’s president Joseph Anis said the agreement reflects GE’s continuing commitment to support energy infrastructure growth in the Kurdistan Region and throughout the country.
The Erbil plant has been in operation since 2008 and has played a crucial role in responding to the growing power demands in the region.

ABB has won orders worth around $120m (£86m) from KAR Construction and Engineering Company to design and build a power plant and construct two 400/132kV high-voltage substations that will supply power to the Kurdistan.

The 640MW open-cycle power plant will use natural gas from the Khormala oil field and light fuel oil (LFO) as back-up to generate electricity from gas turbines.

Two 400/132kV high-voltage substations will help feed the power into Iraq’s regional and national grid, and also supply electricity to the Khormala oil field.

ERBIL, July 18 (AKnews)- Two new power generating units in Suli and Dohuk will be installed and will add 500 megawatts into the Kurdistan grid.

The contract for installing the appendixes of Suli' 750MW and Duhok's 500MW plants was signed yesterday by Kurdistan Electricity Minister Yasin Sheikh Abu-Bakir and Ahmed Ismael, chief of Mass Global Company.

According to the contract the company is to completely install Suli's unit in the two coming weeks and Duhok's unit early June.

Kurdistan power plants produce only 2,685MW while the demand is only 2,400MW, according to Omed Ahmed, central control director at the Ministry of Electricity.

Nevertheless, citizens in Kurdistan are not provided with full time electricity. Ahmed explained due to the high temperature the plants cannot produce the expected volume.

Recently Kurdistan Ministry of Electricity announced plans for exporting electricity by the beginning of 2015.
