At a large congress held for civic society organizations, rebuilding ruined villages by Saddam regime was discussed.

Under the title Developing villages in Kirkuk province, the congress was held on March 31, with some officials in attendance. Sherzad Karim, one of the participants said, “The congress was held to discuss rebuilding nearly 1,000 villages in the Kirkuk province, which were destroyed in the times of the Baath regime.”

Sherzad also said the rebuilding should be through improving agriculture and livestock, and that “The biggest obstacle is the shortage of water resources.” In the 1980′s, thousands of villages were destroyed as to ‘ethnically cleanse’ the places which were inhabited by Kurds.

Kirkuk Governor Dr. Najmadin Omar Kareem , met today , with the US Acting Consul General in Kirkuk.

During the meeting, they discussed the political, security, services situations , as well as , developments in the province.

the Governor, said that his administration is making efforts for the development and improvement of services and implementation of projects across the province without discrimination and that the reconstruction will include all areas of Kirkuk.

Mr. Kareem called on , the U.S. consulate to encourage U.S. companies to come and work in Kirkuk.

Due to parlous security situation, no activity was held on the Environment Day, but a planting campaign is promised to take place in the coming days.

“We couldn’t launch any activity on Environment Day due to the security situation,” according to Shkofa Muhamad, Head of the Green Kurdistan Group. She added, “We’ll start a campaign in the coming days, at first from the towns and districts.”

She said the planting will also be taking place in Topzawa village, a symbol of the Anfal process where thousands of Kurds evacuated and killed by the Baath regime. “The engineers should care about planting while building the apartments,” Muhamad said.

According to the Green Kurdistan Group, the green space is 3% in Kirkuk with one million plants, while it should be 15-25% according to the international standards.

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s Minister of Higher Education including 56 Kirkuk students in the Human Capacity Building Program to send students to study abroad.

In a press conference held on April 22, Dr. Ali Saeed, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Studies announced accepting 630 candidates for studying for a Masters and PhD in various fields.

Students can apply from now on according to the minister. The candidates are divided as below:

1. 250 Masters candidates from Erbil, Sulaimani, Duhok, and Kirkuk.

2. 291 first graded Bachelor holders from 2010-2011 from Sulaimani, Erbil and Duhok.

3. 124 PhD candidates from Erbil, Sulaimani, Duhok and Kirkuk.

Amongst Kirkuk’s students, 56 of them will be chosen for a Masters degree, and 14 for a PhD, according to Dr. Saeed.

ERBIL, April 25 (AKnews) - Kirkuk's budget for the current financial year amounts to more than 600bn IQD ($514m) and has been ratified by the Iraqi Council of Representatives, said the province's governor.

Najmadin Karim said the budget totals 592bn IQD ($507m) in addition to 50bn IQD ($43m) from last year.

This is the largest allocation in the history of the province, added Karim. With this money, dozens of projects will be implemented in all neighborhoods and districts in the province.

"The current budget will push Kirkuk toward a big stage of work and projects and can create some work opportunities in the province," said the governor.

In Kirkuk, a statue has been built to honour Ali Mardan, a legendary singer from Kirkuk.

On April 25, the Ali Mardan statue was uncovered in Ali Mardan Street. Ali Zangana, head of the Kurdistan Singers’ Union said, “Ali Mardan was famous in Iraq and especially among the Kurds. He served his art well. The statue is a major work for keeping him amoungst us.”

The ceremony was attended by many officials and citizens including Salah Dalo, an official from the Kurdistan Democratic Party who hosted the event.

Ali Mardan was a Kurdish singer born in 1904 in Kirkuk. He was called the master of Maqam (singing style) as he had published many works of Maqam. He died on January 24, 1981.

KIRKUK, April 25 (AKnews) - Kirkuk province is to establish a modern butchery that includes a livestock market in Kirkuk city at a total cost of more than 6bn IQD ($5m).

Image 106336Chairman of the investment committee in Kirkuk province Falah al-Bazzaz said the project is the first of its kind and is scheduled to be completed on an area of ​​40 acres.

Bazzaz added that a contract was signed with Turkish company Jameson to develop the project alongside veterinarians and specialists. The completed site will accommodate 150 cows and 300 sheep.

Associate chief of the committee Assad Fadhel said the project will be implemented by two Iraqi companies, Durrat al-Faisial and Sama al-Biet al-Saeid.

Director of the Municipality of Kirkuk Abdul Karim Hassan commented: "The project is very important because it will contribute in the treatment of environmental pollution and put an end to the slaughter and breeding of sheep in residential neighborhoods."

The butchery will be established outside of Kirkuk city and will be subject to health monitoring.
