Finsbury Park stabbing

Two people have been taken to hospital after a stabbing at a park in north London.

Officers were called at 2.40pm to reports that a group of men were intoxicated and fighting in Finsbury Park.

"Officers attended and found one man with apparent stab wounds," a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said.

"The London Ambulance Service attended and the man has been taken to hospital, his injuries are not thought to be life threatening."

The LAS said paramedics were called to reports of "a stabbing and assaults" in the park.

"We dispatched three ambulance crews and an incident response officer," a spokeswoman told the Standard.

"We treated three people at the scene and took two to a major trauma centre."

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

Mistaken identity shooting in west London

Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a young man was shot dead in west London in a suspected case of mistaken identity

Alexander Kareem, 20, was killed in Shepherd's Bush on June 8.

The Metropolitan Police said all seven suspects were arrested in the early hours of Tuesday and taken into custody at London police stations.

Those arrested include a 16-year-old boy and three men, aged 18, 20 and 23, all from Ealing, west London, a 24-year-old man from Brent, in north-west London, and a 20-year-old man and 35-year-old woman, both from Hounslow, west London.

Detective chief inspector Wayne Jolley, who is leading the investigation for the Met’s Specialist Crime Team, said: “This is a significant development in the investigation, however we will not be complacent.

"We will continue to work hard to make sure those responsible are brought to justice. I believe this murder to have been a case of mistaken identity, perpetrated recklessly and with no regard whatsoever for human life.

“Alexander’s death is a tragic reminder that carrying a gun has devastating consequences, I urge anyone with information to come forward and speak with us.”

Violent London weekend

A young man was repeatedly stabbed in a brawl outside a pub during a weekend of bloodshed that saw five other people shot

The victim, in his early twenties, was attacked near the Rose & Crown in Orpington, at about 7pm last night as families ate and drank in the hot weather.

Police were called by paramedics, who took the man to a south London hospital, where he remained today.

A Met spokesman said: “His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident. No arrests have been made.” Officers were at the scene of the stabbing today.

Earlier in the weekend, two men, aged 30 and 31, were shot and stabbed after a fight in Mandeville Street, Hackney, at about 1.10am on Saturday.

Detectives said two males — who are the same age as the victims — had been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm. Both were released under investigation.

In a separate incident 30 minutes later, a man in his twenties was found with a gunshot wound in London Road, Croydon. Armed officers and paramedics attended and took him to hospital. No arrests have been made.

At about 7pm on Friday, another two young men presented themselves at a south London hospital with gunshot injuries. Police had earlier been called to Akerman Road, Brixton, where they found damage to two parked vehicles but no trace of victims at that time.

None of the victims is in a life-threatening condition in hospital. The Rose & Crown was contacted for comment.

Pleads for bleed kits in public spaces

The mother of a murdered teenager is calling for life-saving bleed kits for stab victims to be placed in public spaces

Image

Yemi Hughes’s son Andre Aderemi, 19, was chased, beaten and hacked to death with a sword on a Croydon housing estate in August 2016. The killers were three of teacher Mrs Hughes’s former pupils.

Mrs Hughes, 41, is crowd-funding £5,000 to buy 50 kits that could be put in shops and transport hubs so first aid can be administered in the crucial minutes before police and paramedics arrive.

Each pack contains gauze to reduce severe haemorrhaging, a chest seal dressing which allows air to escape the pleural cavity, a tourniquet, gloves and scissors.

More than 300 bleed control kits were supplied to late-night venues in the City of London last year, but they are not widely available across the capital.

Mrs Hughes, of Croydon, said: “When my son was stabbed, I’d like to think one of these kits used by a member of the public could have kept him alive until paramedics came.

“Time is vital. One stab wound is all it takes for a youngster to bleed to death. Even though Andre was killed, I’d like to see these out there and readily available. It’s about preventing loss of life and I’m happy to get as many bleed kids as I can.

“I want Andre’s death not to be just another senseless murder, but a catalyst for change.”

In 2017 three men were jailed for a total of 60 years after being convicted at the Old Bailey of beating and stabbing Andre to death when a feud over a teenage girl “escalated out of control”.

London's bloodiest month

A young man was shot dead and another fatally stabbed within just six hours as the toll from London’s bloodiest month of 2020 rose to 17

It takes the total number of homicide investigations opened so far this year to 76, and follows concern of an upsurge in street violence as lockdown is eased.

Witnesses to the first killing, in Edmonton, saw a male in his mid-twenties chased and then shot in the chest at 9pm last night. He staggered about 50 yards and collapsed in Beaconsfield Road.

He was pronounced dead at the scene an hour later.

Andreas Papastylianou, 70, who lives nearby, said: “His family arrived at the scene quickly. One was shouting, ‘That’s my brother, let me see him.’

“When the police said his brother had died, the man was banging his head on a wall. It was a terrible thing to see.”

He added: “The neighbours and paramedics fought so hard to save him. The poor family were screaming and begging with the police to get to the body.”

A witness, 22, said: “I heard two very loud gunshots. I looked out my window and saw a guy lain there. Within seconds neighbours were there. They were battling to save his life.”

A pensioner, whose flat overlooks the scene said: “It was a lovely summer’s evening and the kids were out. I heard two loud shots. I looked out and mothers were running away with their children.

"It was carnage. What is London coming too?”

Resident Joe Beranardes, 53, said: “You do get problems around here with young people and drug selling. It’s still a shock when something like this happens on your doorstep.”

Six hours later in Hounslow a man in his early thirties was stabbed to death in Clements Court housing estate off Green Lane. A person has been arrested.

There have been 17 homicides so far in July, five in the last week, compared with nine in June and eight in May.

Meanwhile Mohim Hussain, 40, was due to appear in court today charged with stabbing a police officer in the arm in Ashmore Road, West Kilburn, on Tuesday.

His injuries were not life-threatening and he has been discharged from hospital.

Hussain, of Ashmore Road, was charged with wounding with intent and possession of a knife or blade in a public place. He was due to appear at Westminster magistrates’ court.

Knifeman admits attempted murder

A violent offender who stabbed a young mother in the face and neck days after his release from prison has dramatically changed his plea and admitted trying to kill her

Image

Josephine Conlon, 36, had been pushing her baby in a pram in Streatham, south-west London, when she was set upon by Mark Brazant on the afternoon of December 30 last year.

Brazant, 44, who had gone awol upon being freed from jail on Christmas Eve, stabbed her seven times in the face and neck before running off.

At his trial, Brazant had denied meaning to seriously injure Mrs Conlon and a jury was discharged after failing to reach a verdict despite more than 40 hours of deliberations.

But on Thursday, he admitted attempted murder after the prosecution called for a retrial.
[downtonavenue0301.jpg]

Ms Conlonr was left bleeding and slumped over her pram after the attack on Downton Avenue

Previously, the court had heard how Brazant, who has paranoid schizophrenia, had a history of attacking lone women for no reason and had a conviction for carrying a blade.

In January 2017, he collided with a woman, swore at her, grabbed her arm and shoved her away.

On November 26 last year, he attacked four women on the same day, grabbing one by the neck after accusing her of smiling at him, and punching another for laughing.

He pleaded guilty to three charges of battery and one of common assault, but was released on licence from Thameside Prison on Christmas Eve to spend a year on post-sentence supervision.

On his release, he reported to the probation service but records show he was asked to return the following week as Thameside had sent him to the wrong office.

Brazant was reported missing after he failed to turn up at a supported house for people with mental health problems in which he was meant to stay.

On December 30 last year, Mrs Conlon was returning home after meeting other new mothers at a local bakery.

CCTV footage showed the moment she crossed paths with Brazant in the street, prompting the defendant to follow her.

Mrs Conlon told jurors that she first realised she was “in danger” when she was shoved forcefully in the back.

She fell into a driveway, and the buggy containing her baby daughter rolled on to the kerb and became wedged next to a parked car.

Mrs Conlon told jurors: “I remember thinking he had pushed me into the driveway because he was going to rape me.

“Then he didn’t, he just started hitting me.

“I realised I was being stabbed. I was screaming a lot because I was not in the road so I wanted somebody to hear me.

“I was ducking and trying to get away and trying to get up on to my feet.

“I could feel blood. The adrenaline took away pain but I could feel things dripping.”

She added: “I managed to get up on my feet and that’s when he turned and ran away.”

She screamed for help and neighbours came to her aid before medics arrived.

Mrs Conlon, who was supported in court by her husband Greg, was discharged from hospital the next day but continues to have treatment for scars to her face and neck, the court heard.

In the early hours of January 2, Brazant walked into Wandsworth police station carrying a knife, and said he had “stabbed a person on the street two days earlier”.

During his trial, Brazant, of Ealing, west London, had denied he intended to kill Mrs Conlon, saying he was hearing voices telling him to hurt someone.

He said he chose Mrs Conlon because she was small, female, pushing a buggy and he did not think she would fight back.

Having stabbed her repeatedly, he told himself “that’s enough, that will do” and left, he said.

The court heard Brazant was on medication for his mental health condition but had stopped taking it.

He had admitted unlawful wounding, but denied attempted murder and an alternative charge of wounding with intent.

Brazant entered his new guilty plea via video link from Three Bridges medium secure hospital.

Mrs Conlon sat in court with her husband by her side.

Defence lawyer Oliver Renton said: “This is not a matter which has been unaffected by the inability because of the current pandemic to be heard again this year.

“Mr Brazant was told the matter could not be resolved until 2021 at trial and his pleas follow on from that.”

Judge Mark Lucraft QC set a sentencing date for September 16 and remanded him into custody.

Oxford Street stabbing

A man was stabbed to death in front of horrified shoppers on Oxford Street

The incident occurred at a junction between Oxford Street and Market Place just after 5.30pm on Saturday.

Shocking footage from the scene shows stunned shoppers reacting to the incident.

One witness, Benjamin Teacher said he saw a man armed with a machete chasing another man.

"Someone was running down the middle of Oxford Street in broad daylight on a Saturday with a machete, chasing someone", he said. And now police everywhere because this is London!"

Police attended the scene and found a man suffering from a stab wound. He was taken by the London Ambulance Service to a central London hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7.33pm.

Three arrests have been made.

Rapper's drug-death
conviction quashed

Louella Fletcher-Michie was found dead in a wooded area on the edge of the Bestival site

Image

A rapper who gave his girlfriend drugs at a music festival and filmed her as she died has had his conviction for manslaughter overturned.

Ceon Broughton, 31, was jailed for eight-and-a-half years in 2019 over the death of Louella Fletcher-Michie, 24.

The daughter of Holby City actor John Michie died after taking the hallucinogenic class A drug 2-CP at Bestival in Dorset in 2017.

Three judges at the Court of Appeal ruled to overturn the conviction.

Miss Fletcher-Michie was found dead in woodland, 400m from the festival's hospital tent in the early hours of 11 September 2017, the day she was due to turn 25.

During Broughton's trial, the jury was shown video shot by the rapper - who used the stage name CeonRPG - in which Miss Fletcher-Michie became "disturbed, agitated, and then seriously ill".

Broughton, of Enfield, north London, was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence and supplying a class A drug at Winchester Crown Court in February last year.
Ceon Broughton Image copyright Dorset Police

Image

Delivering the Court of Appeal's ruling, Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett said the expert evidence on the likelihood of Miss Fletcher-Michie's surviving if she had received treatment sooner was "not capable of establishing causation to the criminal standard".

He added: "In respectful disagreement with the judge, we conclude that the appellant's main argument, that the case should have been withdrawn from the jury, is established.

"Taken at its highest, the evidence adduced by the prosecution was incapable of proving causation to the criminal standard of proof.

"The appeal against conviction for manslaughter must be allowed."
John Michie

Lord Burnett said the jury had to rely on the evidence of one expert when assessing whether Broughton's actions contributed "significantly" to his girlfriend's death.

He said the expert had suggested Miss Fletcher-Michie would have had a 90% chance of survival if she had been given medical treatment at 21:10 - nearly five hours after she took the drug.

Given that the criminal standard of proof requires jurors to be sure "beyond reasonable doubt", Lord Burnett said the expert's evidence was "not enough" and therefore the issue of whether Broughton caused death by gross negligence should not have been for the jury to decide.

The court ruled there should not be a retrial for the manslaughter conviction - which accounted for seven years of Broughton's sentence.

His conviction for supplying his girlfriend with the class A drugs stands.

It is believed Broughton will now be released.

A statement issued by Broughton's lawyers after the conviction was quashed said: "The Court of Appeal has today found that Louella's death occurred not as a result of criminal negligence but was instead a tragic accident.

"Ceon remains devastated by her death.

"He has always wished that he could have done more to save her.

"He loved Louella and she him, but he knows that no words will ever be sufficient to convey his sense of responsibility for what happened or to begin to remove the pain that others have been caused."

Family of murdered athlete
call for more stop and search

The father of an athlete stabbed to death at a Tube station by a thug on licence for another knife attack today demanded more stop and search as he spoke of his family’s pain

Tashan Daniel, 20, was murdered by Alex Lanning for “looking at him” across the tracks at Hillingdon station, west London.

Drug dealer Lanning, who will be jailed for life today, only served half of a four-year sentence for repeatedly stabbing a client in Brighton.

He was released in March 2018. On September 24 last year, Lanning knifed innocent Tashan through the heart and lung with a £200 serrated Aviator 1 blade.

Lanning claimed the weapon — used by fighter pilots to cut through Perspex glass — was a prop he stole from the Warner Bros set of Fast & Furious 9 where he worked, something the studio denies.
[1908tashandaniel.jpg]

A talented 200m runner, Tashan was tipped as a future Olympian (Family collect)

At the Old Bailey this month, Lanning, of Uxbridge, was found guilty of murdering Tashan, a budding photographer and 200-metre sprinter who was tipped to be a future Olympian.

Co-defendant Jonathan Camille, 19, of Kensington, was convicted of manslaughter.

Despite the recent debate over stop and search, Tashan’s parents Chandima and Celia, both 49, believe their son would still be alive if repeat violent offenders like Lanning were targeted more by police and probation services.

Heathrow worker Chandima told the Standard: “The habitual carrying of knives by some young people didn’t really hit home until Tashan’s killing. The scary part is how readily they are to use them.

“If Lanning had been stopped and search on his way to the station, then we wouldn’t be having the conversation. It would be totally justified why a man like that would be stopped.

“I understand both sides of the debate but until you’ve walked in our shoes, you don’t understand the importance of stop and search.

“We also question why Lanning was on licence after just serving two years. It doesn’t sit well with us.

Hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects at a vigil outside Hillingdon station after the killing (PA)

“If he was being watched more carefully, Tashan’s murder probably wouldn’t have happened.

“London is really unsafe. It’s a shame because there was nothing I loved more than living in our area.”

Just an hour before he died, Arsenal fan Tashan had kissed his father goodbye and set off for his first game at the Emirates Stadium without him.

Whilst he waited for a train with friend Teyrone Campbell, Lanning — who Tashan had never met — was captured on CCTV rushing over from another platform to attack him.

Tashan’s parents arrived at the station while paramedics were desperately battled to save his life.

Lanning was seen smiling as he fled, ditching his blood-stained clothes and the knife in a nearby estate, before going on the run for two weeks.

Chandima, who also has a 15-year-old daughter Oceanna, said Tashan’s death had taken a devastating emotional toll on the close-knit family.

He said: “As a family of four with Tashan, we had a great dynamic. Life was pretty awesome.

“But since the loss of Tashan, we’re trying to find our feet.

“We share the grief but me, my wife and daughter deal with it each our own way.

“As much as we are tight, we have actually kind of drifted apart as well. This is why knife crime tears family’s apart.

“I hope anyone tempted to carry a knife can see the devastation it causes to all families, not just the victim’s but their own.”

In the days after Tashan’s death many large vigils were held outside the Tube station. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the local MP, visited the Daniels at their home in Hillingdon.

Chandima Daniel, alongside Tashan's mother Cecia Daniel (right) and sister Oceanna Daniel (left), speaking outside the Old Bailey after Alex Lanning was found guilty of murder (PA)

Chandima said his son, who trained up to four times a week at Hillingdon Athletic Club, wanted to make the Olympics and was a "fantastic human being".

He added: “We’re very proud of Tashan and what he achieved in his short life, how well respected he was.

“As parents, we couldn’t ask for more. People who barely knew him thought he was a good soul. “When he was at sixth form college, Tashan brought lunch for one of the younger students who didn’t have money.

“These are the values we instilled in him.

“Whatever sentences Lanning and Camille receive today, it will not fill the huge void left in our lives. They have taken Tashan from us. But their convictions have restored our faith in the justice system.

“The jury was able to see past all of the lies.”

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn, of British Transport Police, said: “Tashan had set out that day to watch Arsenal play football with tickets he’d received as a birthday present, but instead died in a senseless and unprovoked attack at the hands of Lanning.

Alex Lanning was on licence for another knife attack at the time of the killing (BTP)

“Throughout the trial we heard of Lanning efforts to evade justice and how he was assisted by Camille – fleeing the scene, hiding the murder weapon, and removing and replacing their blood-stained clothes. Witnesses even saw Lanning smiling as he ran away.

“At no point did he show remorse, and neither man handed themselves into the police, requiring an extensive investigation to ensure they were arrested and brought before the courts.

“Although both men have now been convicted, and will face substantial jail time, no level of justice will ever be enough for the loss of such a young and promising life, and it won’t fill the hole that Tashan’s death has left in the lives of his loved ones.

“Throughout the investigation and court proceedings we’ve learned about Tashan’s life, the love he shared with his mum and dad, his childhood, his interests and his aspirations. He was a good and loving lad who’ll be dearly missed.”

The family have set up the Tashan Daniel Campaign, which aims to tackle knife crime by getting it to the top of the political agenda.

As well as raising awareness, they want anyone possessing a knife in public to face the same minimum sentence as they would for having a firearm.

Police hunt eight men
after 11 officers injured

Detectives are hunting eight suspects after officers were pelted with "bricks and missiles" while trying to break up an illegal lockdown music event in west London

Image

The clashes broke out after officers were called to Havelock Close, White City, on July 3 to reports of a party on an estate.

Revellers soon "became hostile" and some began throwing items including "bricks and other missiles", causing officers to retreat and regroup.

Riot police returned to the estate and managed to disperse the crowd amid further violence. A Dispersal Zone was authorised and a section 60 was put in place allowing police to stop and search.

Police have released images of people they would like to speak with (Metropolitan Police)

Eleven officers were injured and two suffered broken bones.

There have been no arrests. On Friday detectives released photos of eight men they want to speak to in connection with the violence.

Detective Sergeant Karl Lewis, Central West CID, said: “On that night officers were responding to multiple calls from residents to reports of a large gathering, noise, anti-social behaviour and violence.

"The hostility and violence they were met with is absolutely unacceptable.

White City: Police attacked trying to break up illegal rave

“Officers encountered items including bricks and bottles being thrown at them. An investigation is ongoing and we are keen to hear from anyone who can identify any of the persons pictured.”

A Met Police spokesman warned that party-goers attending unlicensed music events are "putting themselves at risk" and these events often spawn anti-social behaviour and violence.

He said: "As soon as police receive information on a UME, we will work with organisers and local authorities to shut down events at the earliest opportunity.

"If organisers fail to comply, police will use legislation to seize sound systems and laptops.

"Legislation is also used to disperse crowds and ultimately make arrests if people fail to comply."

Man knifed in Brixton fight

A young man was knifed to death and another man was found with stab wounds after a "fight" broke out in south London

Scotland Yard said officers were called to reports of a fight in Brixton at around 6pm on Thursday.

A man, believed to be in his 20s, was found with stab wounds in Overton Road. He was taken to hospital and his condition has been deemed non-life threatening.

Shortly after, police were called to Wynne Road where they found a second man, also believed to be in his 20s, with stab injuries.

He was taken to hospital for treatment, but he died at around 8.50pm.

The Metropolitan Police has launched a murder investigation and enquiries are underway to locate and inform his next of kin.

Officers found an overturned car in nearby Marcella Road, which is being linked to the stabbings.

A crime scene remains in place and as of yet no arrests have been made.

A section 60 has been put in place covering the postcode areas of SW9, SW4, SW8, SE11 and SE5, and is due to expire at 9am on Friday.

Young man stabbed to death after
sword-wielding youths clash on estate

A young man was stabbed to death as youths armed with swords and machetes clashed on a housing estate in south London.

Witnesses claimed six more people were hurt as a car speeding away from the scene of the brawl on the Angell Town estate in Brixton overturned.

Officers and ambulance crews called to Overton Road at 6pm last night found the 21-year-old victim collapsed with multiple knife wounds in nearby Wynne Road. He was taken to hospital where he died just before 9pm.

Another man, also in his twenties, was found with stab injuries and remains in hospital today. His condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

A Met spokesman said they were working to locate and inform the victim’s next of kin. An overturned car that crashed 400ft away in Marcella Road is being linked to the death.

Witnesses claimed six people were injured by the vehicle but this was unconfirmed.

Pastor Lorraine Jones, whose son Dwayne Simpson, 20, was stabbed to death on the estate in 2014, said: “It’s like a war zone. This car came into the estate trying to run over the lads. I hear they even got out of the car and started stabbing.

“Families and horrified children are waking up this morning to see a car turned over and police tape around their play area. But this is the reality.

“Sadly we’ve had a fatality and both victims and perpetrators need in-depth intervention support. We are crying but we are not giving up. We want change, our children’s lives matter.”

One man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm as an investigation continues into what is being treated as a gang-related killing, the Met said.

A photograph of a black sword, reportedly dumped at the scene, was being circulated on social media today. The death marks the 82nd homicide investigation opened by police in London this year. A section 60 order granting police additional stop and search powers was put in place across an area of south London, including Brixton, Clapham, Kennington and Vauxhall.

Last month, two men aged 20 and 39 were fired at by gunman riding a moped on the Angell Town. The pair later presented themselves at hospital suffering from gunshot wounds.

In June, 22 police officers were injured when they tried to break up an unlicensed music event on the estate.

Man dies in south east London

A man has died after being found with serious stab injuries in south east London

Police were called to Heron Hill Road in Belvedere shortly after 6am on Friday by paramedics to reports of a man with stab injuries.

Officers attended and found a man seriously injured.

"The man was transported a short distance by ambulance to Plumstead High Street, where paramedics from the air ambulance treated him," Scotland Yard said in a statement.

"Despite the efforts of emergency services, he died shortly after 7am."

Lewisham MPS said on Twitter: "Enquiries ongoing into the circumstances. Not being treated as a murder investigation at this stage."

Police said a crime scene has been put in place in both Heron Hill Road and Plumstead High Street and enquiries are ongoing to trace his next of kin.

So many black on black killings I seldom mention them but this was a particularly horrific fight

Police are looking for this man after an attacker killed one victim and wounded seven other people

The attacks in the early hours sparked a massive police manhunt for the suspect

A 23-year-old man was killed in Irving Street at 01:50 BST, West Midlands Police said. A man and a woman, aged 19 and 32, suffered critical injuries.

Five other people, aged between 23 and 33, were also hurt. They were taken to hospital and so far two have been discharged.

The public are urged to remain vigilant and not to approach the man pictured

The CCTV footage shows a man wearing a baseball cap and a dark hoodie with white drawstrings.

Also wearing dark-coloured trousers and shoes, he can be seen standing and walking on a street corner.

"At this stage we believe that the attacks were random and we have no indication of a motive," said Ch Supt Steve Graham, who urged the public to remain vigilant.

"We are appealing for anyone who recognises the man in the footage to contact us urgently. If you see him, please do not approach him, but dial 999 immediately."

'Impact on the city'

West Midlands Police were first called to Constitution Hill where a man sustained a superficial injury just after 00:30 BST, then to Livery Street 20 minutes later, where the 19-year-old man was critically injured and a woman was also hurt.

An hour later at 01:50 BST, police were sent to Irving Street, where the 23-year-old died and another man suffered serious injuries.

Ten minutes later, they were called to Hurst Street where the 32-year-old woman was critically injured and two men suffered lesser injuries.

The stabbings do not appear to be terrorism related or gang related, police said.

Mr Graham added: "We do not underestimate the impact that these incidents have had on the city of Birmingham today.

"We declared this a major incident at the earliest opportunity and we have drafted in scores of officers to help with the investigation and patrol the city to reassure residents and visitors that we are doing all we can to apprehend the person responsible."

Multiple witnesses saw the attacks, including Nikita Denton who was out celebrating her 29th birthday and helped stop one of the women bleeding in the street.

Another, restaurant owner Savvas Sfrantzis, described seeing the attacker walk calmly away after stabbing a woman repeatedly.

"I looked at him, facing him, and I can see he had a blade, small, not very big, and he was stabbing her in the neck.

"He was like very cold and he wasn't panicking and he wasn't reacting or anything. After he stabbed her between five and seven times... he walked off as if nothing has happened."

Officers have recovered a knife from a drain but Mr Graham said it was "way too early" to say if it was connected to the case.

At an earlier press conference he was asked how the knifeman was able to move through the city centre for more than two hours without being caught.

Mr Graham said the suspect's route through the city was "relatively unusual".

He added: "There was no suggestion people had seen him running out, area searches were being made at the time, unfortunately the subject wasn't caught."

The force's police and crime commissioner David Jamieson labelled the assaults "disturbing", with the violence unfolding as revellers had been enjoying the night.

Julia Robinson, from the Southside Business Improvement District, said businesses were in "shock" and had worked through the night to provide police with CCTV footage from the area.

West Midlands Police said extras officers had "flooded" the city centre and forensic experts had examined four scenes.

A heavy police presence remained throughout the day, with armed officers, patrols, riot vans and squad cars visible.
