MP says ISIS attack in Turkey’s Diyarbakir aimed to kill Kurdish leader

Ziya Pir, a parliament member for the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) on Saturday said that the Diyarbakir bomb attack claimed by ISIS was aimed to kill Kurdish politicians, including popular HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtas.
Pir said that detained HDP MPs, including co-chair Selahattin Demirtas have barely escaped the terror attack in Diyarbakir city, south Turkey. He said that most of the Kurdish politicians who were arrested, were brought to the police station that ISIS attacked.
At least nine people were killed and more than 100 were wounded in an attack that was blamed on the Kurdish PKK movement, but now claimed by the Islamic State in a rare statement.
The attack happened a few hours after pro-Kurdish leaders Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag were detained.
Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım blamed the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) for the attack. However, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack through a statement released by the Jihadi Amaq Agency.
The attack follows a call by ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi last Tuesday on his followers to attack Turkey.
According to observers, the goal of the ISIS attack was to put more fuel on the fire in Turkey. In the past, ISIS has carried out attacks in order to disrupt the peace process between the PKK and the Turkish state.
