Security research firm, Trustwave, announced publicly yesterday, Tuesday, Dec 3, that over 2 million passwords on Yahoo, Google, Facebook, and other popular sites were compromised on Nov 24. Including 318,000 different passwords on the social networking site, Facebook.
In addition to Facebook, over 22,000 passwords were stolen on Twitter, and an additional 8,000 on LinkedIN. The companies involved were notified of the breach immediately, and Trustwave released the findings to the public shortly thereafter.
The hack started on Nov 21, and used keylogging software run through a proxy server. Making it impossible to tell which specific computers are affected. However, Facebook and Twitter did announce that they have reset the passwords for the users whose passwords were stolen. There has been no official statement from LinkedIN, yet.
Authorities announced that they have shutdown one server in the Netherlands, however, it is still unclear as to if any additional servers of the hackers are still running.
Because the virus is hidden and cannot be found through file searches, the safest option for those worried as to whether or not their accounts are compromised would be to update to the latest version of their antivirus software and install any new patches for Adobe and Java on their internet browsers. After that, there's always the option to reset your passwords as well.
