Do you live in a racist society

PostAuthor: talsor » Tue Oct 15, 2013 2:01 pm

I'm a believer that people (normal ones ) develop attitude towards others based on what they do despite their color , religion and where they come from or Am I wrong here ?.

Where do you live and do you think you live in a racist society ?

I believe that 'normal' humans develop exactly the contrary. Basic instincts. :-D Being tolerant toward who is different than yourself is something unnatural to human soul.

It is not easy to tell if a country is racist or not if you don't belong yourself to a minority. But the success of populist-anti-migrants-rightists parties in European Union can show at least a tendency to xenophobia (which is not exactly racism).

Concerning France, I think that most people are anti muslims (because of religious extremism), some are anti Arabs and Africans (especially among lower classes and extreme-rightists) though South Asiatic people have a better reputation (Indochina War is far from memories) while Chinese migrants complain because 'Arabs and Africans' attacked them.

But behind these attitudes there is mainly a social and economical problem (if you live in a poor area) and political : our politicians like to use the fancy of a 'foreigners' invasion' and play with an Islamist threat.

That is the general survey of French racism. What I have observed is that sadly new migrants are not less racists than natives. For example our current Interior Ministry told racist opinions against Roms though his own father was a Spanish migrant.

For example, the common test in France to decide if someone is racist, is to ask if one would accept that one's brother/sister/child would marry a muslim, an African or a Chinese. But there are more subtle discriminative attitudes concerning job, renting, neighboring, etc.

But if we read social studies, the more people are young the less they are racist : they just follow the general evolution of the country. What we call 'racism' has not the same meaning in 1920s than nowadays. So even now, Europe is less racist than in 1950, 1960 or 1970.

I do not blame you , you are french after all :-D just kidding .

But would you care who save's your life in an accident or help you get a job or give you good advice ? would you care what color or religion they have ? Wouldn't you develop a good attitude and be more acceptance of that person ? Doesn't that prove that we are what we do ? Yes , New or different is scary to some people , but I think it should not unless proven that it is bad .

perhaps I should have been more specific . The question was directed at immigrants .

The racism that some immigrants display is actually more open and less subtle . White kids generally have the hardest time at school here and suffer all kind of abuse due to their skin color .

Do not forget that French that cynical and joking people in 1789 wrote the Déclaration des droits de l'homme et du citizen. ;)
Sadly they did not respect all the time and it is still the case. But I approve all these articles and I would like to extend some rights to animals.

I personally make no difference in rights and attitude and all these things between humans. I don't care of religions, nationalities, and all that superficial stuff, like DNA, pure blood, and such fancies as I could have read in that forum. According to me, there is only 2 kind of humans : morons (85%) and others (poor aliens of 5%). That is the point in which I make difference in my sympathies. :-D

When I went to London from my home in the English countryside - where there were only white English people - I was delighted with all the different ethnic groups and all the different foods :))

My first job out of uni was as a director of a 24 hour multi-cultural advise and support service - the other 2 directors being a Jamaican gentlemen and an African - I learnt a great deal from them - in those days people were more open and people were not afraid to say how they felt

England might look less racist but it suffers from a deep festering racism that will explode - recent governments are in part to blame for this - I think that I have mentioned my wonderful friend Jag on this forum before - Jag along with his good friend Lord Bernard Weatherill spent a great many years holding multicultural functions in colleges, schools and in the community - these were fantastic events covering EVERY single culture one could possibly think of - from Scottish sword dancers to Japanese theatre - then a labour government came to power took away the funding and put money into Black History Month X(

In the UK there is a lot of problems with Jamaicans and youths of Jamaican extraction who roam around in ARMED gangs - some social housing estates have become no-go areas due to the violence and the drugs - not racism but a sad fact which is leading to a form of racism - property owners tell estate agents not to find black tenants - most would rather take their property off the market than be forced to take in black tenants

Black girls do not want really dark black boyfriends and call them far worse names than any white person would dare to use - many Pakistani people hate people with dark skin - some of the ladies will not drink tea for fear it will make their skin darker - many ladies with dark skin use dangerous skin whiteners

In the UK we have a serious problem because we allow so many people to come here - we now have Africans who are at war with each other in their homelands continuing to fight each other in England - much of this fighting goes unreported because both side hate and fear the police as much if not more than they hate each other - areas where newcomers live go down in value - they become rougher and white people move out - yes we have white flight - we have Polish builders who work twice as hard as English builders for about a quarter of the money - in fact most non-English people work harder and cheaper than English people :D

Racism is getting worse here because the white indigenous population are suffering - they are the main tax payers - the governments do not have money of their own they have money gleaned from taxes - much of tax payers money is being spent on illegal refugees - I have seen real refugees and victims of torture - personally I would much rather the money be spent on the Kurds escaping from the fighting in Syria than illegal refugees -the south of England cannot cope with all the newcomers - inner-city schools are over-full - doctors and hospitals are over-run and the health services are collapsing

People who have been on the housing waiting list for years are being told they will never be housed due to all the new arrivals who tend to have many more children than English people - recently the government here has bought in something called a bedroom tax - if someone has lived in social housing for years and their children have left home the tenant has to pay extra rent for the empty bedrooms - this is a government plan to make people downsize so that there is more housing for the newcomers - this alone is increasing racism and combined with everything else I would say that England is about to explode - In order to build further housing in the south of England the government wants to build on the countryside and turn our food producing fields into concrete - stupid idea when there is so much empty housing in the north of England

In England our crazy government told us we must not call a Christmas tree a Christmas tree but a celebration tree - Father Christmas has been banned from some areas - just so that the English people do not offend Muslims - this has now become a farce - people who were never racist are beginning to HATE

BBC News

London letting agents 'refuse black tenants' Letting agents in London are prepared to discriminate against would-be tenants on the grounds of race, a BBC undercover investigation has revealed.

Under the Equality Act 2010, it is illegal for businesses to refuse to provide a service based on ethnicity.

But 10 firms told a reporter posing as a landlord they would not let to African-Caribbean people at his request.

A black researcher was denied viewings, yet his white counterpart was welcomed.

BBC London was initially tipped off certain letting agents were willing to discriminate against African-Caribbean people on behalf of landlords, with the alleged misdoing rife in parts of west London.

To expose the practices, a plush three-bedroom flat in north Kensington was acquired. Letting agents from 10 firms were invited to assess its rental value.

'Sorry, it's gone'

All 10 were recorded on secret camera saying they would be prepared not to show the flat to African-Caribbean people - and many detailed how they had done it before.

The lettings manager at A to Z Property Services, in Dollis Hill, said: "We cannot be shown discriminating against a community. But obviously we've got our ways around that.

"99% of my landlords don't want Afro-Caribbeans or any troublesome people."

The lettings manager at National Estate Agents, Willesden, said: "When someone [African-Caribbean] comes in, we won't advise them of this property.

"Even if it does get [asked about] we make up an excuse, to be honest with you."

When a black researcher asked to view the property, the National agent told him: "I'm sorry, that one's gone."

The property was still on the market - and a white researcher got offered a viewing.

The A to Z agent told the black researcher he would call him to arrange a viewing. Despite a second inquiry, the agent never got back in touch.

The agent had previously explained how he could deter unwanted tenants, saying: "We don't say no there and then. We just don't call them back (laughter)."

Once again, the white researcher received an appointment with no fuss.

Figures shared with the BBC suggest perception of discrimination remains widespread.

A survey of 750 adults by the Runnymede Trust found 29% of black people seeking private housing had experienced discrimination - compared to 1% of white respondents.

Rob Berkeley, director of Runnymede, said: "It's shocking that in 2013 outright racism is stopping people from finding a home.

"Many people think the days of landlords hanging 'No Blacks' signs outside properties are long gone - but discrimination clearly still exists."

Despite repeated approaches, National Estate Agents made no comment.

When confronted in his office, the A to Z Property Services agent said it was "pointless taking on a property" if the landlord "doesn't like" the client's ethnicity.

'Nothing to hide'

He continued: "We have plenty of Afro-Caribbean clients - I can show you our files.

"We've got nothing to hide. We don't discriminate against anybody."

The investigation comes 45 years after race relations laws banning discrimination in housing first came in.

After viewing the BBC's evidence, equality lawyer Arpita Dutt said: "These individuals know what they're doing and know what they're doing is wrong.

"Equally, they know how to get round it."

"There's no defence that 'I did it because somebody told me to' - it's absolutely unlawful and in this case there was clear discrimination."

Liberal Democrat Don Foster MP, who was the housing minister between 2012 and 2013, said: "I was horrified. Discrimination has no place in London, it has no place in the rest of the country. We've got firm legislation against it.

"What it will rely on is people who've been the victim of discrimination coming forward."

But BBC London has learned that, although 36 people told the Property Ombudsman they were the victim of racial discrimination in the past three years, not one single complaint was upheld.

Only two allegations resulted in a full investigation.

Mr Foster said existing enforcement was robust and the government was making membership of industry redress schemes mandatory for letting agents.

Housing Minister Kris Hopkins called the practices "totally unacceptable and illegal" and said anyone who felt they had been the victim of racism should come forward so the authorities could take action.

During its investigation the BBC spoke to letting agents who condemned the practices exposed.

Nicola Humphries, of Maida Vale Properties, said: "I'm appalled by the behaviour of some agents in the industry.

"There are some agents who will say anything and do anything to close a deal.

"We need to change the culture - but like any sales business it's a cut throat world and maintaining integrity is not easy."

A selection of comments from other agents willing to discriminate on behalf of a landlord:

"We can tell from speaking to them on the phone what their colour is."

"Without openly advertising that it's no Afro-Caribbeans allowed, we'd obviously understand that it's not available."

"We're in this age where people want to be politically correct, but without being racist, it happens."

"We can always make an excuse that it's under offer, we are just waiting for someone's references."

"Any landlord who is not happy with any nation, we have no problem with that. I'm not going to see like you are racist."

Anthea: Black people are stereotyped as being violent drug dealers - but I also believe that if a person owns a property it should be entirely up to them who they rent it out to - in England the law is on the side of the tenant and it is almost impossible to get rid of a tenant once they are in - many times people are forced to actually sell property at a loss because that is about the only way to remove unwanted tenants

I mention previously that we have violent no-go black housing estates - they exist because the local governments with all their money and solicitors are not able to evict the trouble makers - drug dealers seem to have more rights than those innocent people who find themselves living in the same street or even in the same block of flats - I do not blame any landlord for not wanting to take the risk involved in housing black people - even
African property owners do not want black tenants

If landlords are not permitted to have a say into who they may or may not house then a great many more of them will either keep property empty or invest in another country
