Simple answer

NO

But in England there is very little choice of braodband suppliers - it is either Virgin or BT and there is no Virgin where I live - we have only recently had fibre-optic cabling installed

Man-in-the-middle attacks

I was subject to an attempted man-in-the-middle attack (MitM) but when I asked for advice not one person on here knew what was happening - I knew someone was interfering with my connection - I have just found a couple of lovely photos to show what was happening to my connection:

To protect myself from such attacks I use end-to-end email encryption.

This notice generally means that someone is at risk if a man-in-the-middle attack

I wonder how many people on here have a man-in-the-middle in their system - and do not have the security to alert them :o)

Unbelievably my internet still keeps going down - this must be costing BT a fortune in engineers - and I now have so many levels of encryption on some of my computers that it is hard for me to remember all the different passwords :o)

Perhaps someone tries to use your internet connection to download illegal things ?

Not possible from my side - my computers have wired connections - remember if it is in the air it is everywhere

I cannot use one of my net-books at home because it keeps trying to connect through all my neighbours unlocked wireless sites - I am very tempted to connect and see what they are doing :ymdevil:

There are three elements to your problem .

Your Internet provider
Your computer
YOU :-D

If you are tech savvy check your established connections in the command prompt using netstat -ano and compare it to the processes in your task manager and make sure your PID is checked , otherwise do one of the following .

1-Change your service provider
2-Change your computer or do a clean installation of the OS
3-Have an ECT done :-D

Personally , I would go with step number 2 .

@ talsor"]

Thank you for you advice

1-Change your service provider
There is only ONE wired internet provider in my area and that is BT

2-Change your computer or do a clean installation of the OS
I have more than one computer - all have extremely high levels of encryption - I even reduced the encryption on one of them in case my security was causing a problem but it made no difference

Mostly I use Mint but sometimes Suse - Fedora - Debian - Mageia I was a Red Hat purist who went on to Mandriva - NOT Ubuntu - tails for added security ;) Mint 12 was the best training distro - Maya is best for laptops

3-Have an ECT done :-D
My problems started when I agreed to help a Kurdish political activist ;)

The whole point of the above exercise is to pinpoint where your problem is and I believe it is your hardware at home . OK , Barrow a computer from a friend and establish a direct connection with your internet using your modem ALONE and see if you are gonna have the same problem . if you still experience the problem then it is your service provider and If you don't then it is your hardware (two birds with one stone )

once you established that it is your hardware then build your network in stages and tested in every stage and see where does it fails .

Do not worry Anthea , Many Generations died before us and they could not solve the Kurdish problem . Considering the progress being made I think we are doing just fine .

A BT engineer has come and tested their equipment using an assortment of routers and modems - made no difference - I have tested my system with an assortment of routers and modems that I have - definitely not my connection :D

I have several computers - makes no difference - my problem started over 4 weeks ago and my broadband has been more off than on ever since :((
