ERBIL - The presence of Turkish banks in the Kurdistan Region provides a service for the banks themselves and the movement of business in Iraq and the region, said the president of Erbil's Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Dara Jalil Al-Khayat told Anadolu news agency: "Many Iraqi traders and merchants were suffering in the past years with the problem of the transfer of funds abroad and access to banking services, while the presence of Turkish banks will bring ease, speed and accuracy in commercial activities."

Five Turkish banks have opened branches in Erbil since 2011, including Ish, Agriculture, Waqf, Baraka and Asia.

The Kurdistan Regional Government said earlier that the volume of trade between Turkey and Iraq in 2011 reached $12bn (13.9tr IQD), with 75 percent coming from the Kurdistan Region.

So it seems like we are exporting quite alot to Turkey. They seem to rely on us. :D

How can we export anything, where turkey and iran dont even allow kurdistan to have a glass factory or even simple stuff factories. We are forced to buy rice oil, glass and other things from them. Even fruits and vegetables are forced on us.

By the way, a few years ago, a german company came to kurdistan and said to the KRG that they will bring the same rice oil from germany and the orginal one that german people eat for cheaper price. The reason was because the rice oil that come from turkey and iran are almost all ditry and expired. But KRG could not agree because the mullas and mongols will be unhappy!!!!!

You are wrong... think of all the money Kurdistans makes from the business sector, the construction sector. We have also gas, gold and other minerals and KRG is making money from tourism.

Edit: lol you're talking about export. Yeah, mostly oil.

The situation is still the same and we haven't seen any developments.

Dr. Baram Majid, manager of the Awamedica Pharmaceutical Factory, believes Kurdistan has a medicine mafia as well as dangerous medicines on the market, and claims his company can provide quality control for the Region's medicine market, if requested to do so.

"We can supply 55 kinds of medicine to the whole Region and some of Iraq," stated Majid in an exclusive interview with The Kurdish Globe.

Below is the interview with Dr. Majid.

Globe: What is the situation with medicine in Kurdistan?

Dr. Majid: The situation is still the same and we haven't seen any developments. There is still counterfeit and low-quality medicine in the hospitals and pharmacies. Our citizens still use bad medicine and this cannot be solved in the current way. We need to gather a committee from all parties and develop a technical and strategic plan to address this issue. Technically, we need to give assurance to people through taking immediate measures and have strategic plans as well.

Globe: Who is responsible for importing counterfeit medicine into Kurdistan?

Dr. Majid: Some of the stores order this medicine. They import medicine and they are 100 percent sure it is poor quality but know they can sell it easily. Medicine is not imported in packs or bags, but in large quantities and in large containers. There is a medicine mafia in Kurdistan. Otherwise, how can all these counterfeit medicines be imported without the support of organized crime?

Globe: In Kurdistan, medicine sometimes kills people instead of curing them. Why is that?

Dr. Majid: This is a catastrophe and there are dangerous or poisonous medicines being sold in Kurdistan. Because there are a lot of people with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, blood diseases and other chronic diseases, which require taking medicine for a lifetime, if patients use low-quality, expired or poisoned medicines, it can kill them. In the Region, there are many deaths due to bad medicines and the majority of those hospitalized are due to this counterfeit medicine.

Globe: Why hasn't the pharmaceutical trade been controlled yet in Kurdistan?

Dr. Majid: The Ministry of Health is trying to control it. But this needs labs and experts. Unfortunately, we don't have the staff and experts who can control medicine according to international standards. We have staff in Awamedica and we do quality control ourselves.

Globe: If requested, could you control Kurdistan's medicine supply?

Dr. Majid: Yes we can. We are now controlling part of the medicine supply.

Globe: What do you find when you test the medicines?

Dr. Majid: We find that most of the time those medicines are useless and are not effective.

Globe: Can Awamedica supply enough to meet Kurdistan's demand?

Dr. Majid: We have now developed 55 types of high-quality medicines, which is more important than quantity. Forty of them are currently on the market and 15 new types will be available soon, especially medicines for chronic diseases. Those 55 types account for 60 to 70 percent of medicine types used worldwide. The objective behind establishing Awamedica was to be able to provide drugs to all Kurdistan hospitals and part of Iraq. Those 55 medicines we produce can meet the whole Region's demand and part of those of Iraq. There are some types that have been ordered by the Iraqi Ministry of Health, especially those for chronic disease. We are planning to produce and supply them by 2013.

No it clearly states "coming from Kurdistan" which would indicate we are exporting 75% to them, and they are importing to us.
