kurdistan works on exporting rather than importing Fish

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Thu Apr 28, 2011 1:06 pm

By BILAL SAYID

ERBIL, Iraqi Kurdistan: As demand for fish grows here in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, nearly 70 percent of the fish consumed here is imported from other parts of Iraq and the neighboring Iran, an official in the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources (MAWR) said.‬ ‬

‪While the number of stores selling fish or restaurants serving it have increased, many people still cannot afford it.

‪Rebwar Karim, 20, says “because of the high price of fish, I have often to buy chickens.”

‪As he was washing the table on which he had laid the fish, Qadir Salah who has been selling fish for the past nine years said, “Most of the fish sold in Erbil comes from Mosul, Samarra or Iran because the amount of fish produced locally does not suffice.”

‪Although the MAWR has established a directorate to develop fish raising in the Kurdistan, Sirwan Saeed, the head of the directorate criticized the government for not assisting the private sector in increasing fish raising fields resulting in the influx of fish from outside to Kurdistan’s markets.

‪Nasir Aziz, an expert at MAWR whosupervised fish raising projects in the past, told Rudaw that only 150 tones of fish were raised in Kurdistan in 2009 while nearly 3,000 tons were imported from other parts of Iraq and another 2,000 tons from Iran. Authorities say Kurdistan needs around 5,000 tons of fish per year to meet the current demands.

‪There are currently 285 fish raising projects in Kurdistan which marks a steady growth since 2000.

‪Aziz says if the government supports the efforts by the MAWR, the amount fish raised in Kurdistan can increase up to 6,700 tons per year according to a five year development plan that the ministry has devised.

‪“If Kurdistan’s lakes and dams are used properly, the amount of fish production and raising can increase unbelievably in a way that we can export fish,” Aziz said.‬

Saeed said that there are currently efforts to establish two major projects by the private sector on Kalak river near Erbil and Dokan river near Sulaimani.

Officials say while according to international standards every individual needs to eat 19 kilograms of fish per year, in Kurdistan the number stands at 300 grams.‬ ‬

‪The price of various types of fish vary in the market from 4,000 Iraqi Dinars per each kilogram ($3 approximately) to 11,000 Iraqi Dinars (around $9.5).‬

UAE Helps Erbil to Become Next Dubai

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Thu Apr 28, 2011 1:09 pm

ERBIL: The recent economic and construction boom in Iraqi Kurdistan’s capital Erbil has led many visiting Ministers and businessmen to compare the city’s growth to that of the industrial mega city of Dubai, some suggesting in just five years Erbil could reach the same level.

“If Erbil continues on the recent path of development, there will be another Dubai after five years,” said Abdullah Bilhon, general manager of the industrial city of Dubai, who accompanied Lubna Khalid Al Qasimi, UAE’s Minister of Foreign Trade and another 45 trade agencies to Kurdistan region on May 19.

Bilhon said oil plays an important role in the development of any region and Kurdistan would be no exception. He was further impressed by Erbil’s infrastructure.

“When I landed in Erbil airport I was surprised with the international airport facilities, I didn’t expect such a big airport in Erbil. There I found that Erbil is ahead of the other areas of Iraq in terms of development,” Bilhon told Rudaw.

A representative of the Abu Dhabi Telecom said that the current economic situation in Kurdistan region is very similar to early stages of economic developments in Emirates.

Mr. Bilhon was impressed by the rebuilding work being carried out in Erbil during his visit with the UAE delegation said “there are hidden chances of business and investment in Kurdistan.”

“We own the biggest industrial city in Dubai. We are looking forward to implement projects in Erbil. We want to reach Kurdistan markets and do investment here.”

Dubai is a model which the Kurdish leadership has been eager to copy to Erbil.

“We are working on reconstructing and developing Erbil in the same system as Dubai,” Nawzad Hadi, the Governor of Erbil told Rudaw. “We have tried to open our gates for all global companies for this purpose.”

Mr. Hadi said Erbil has not yet reached the level of Dubai but has ready seen significant improvements in economic infrastructure, tourism, agriculture and all other sectors.

Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan, has seen great development since 2004. Many strategic projects have been implemented in that city such as new roads, hotels, parks and new markets. In 2008, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) issued an investment law which paved the way for international and local investors.

Abdulla Salih, a general director working at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Trade, said that they did not want to bring the experience of Singapore and Hong Kong to Dubai.

“Any country can be a new example by itself. It’s important to hit the target as quickly as possible and more importantly to choose the economic field which this region can depend on for its development,” said Mr. Salih.

When The Wells Run Dry

Abdulla Bilhon said oil will be finished in Emirates one day so the city has planned ahead by reducing their economic dependency. Dubai’s leaders are now turning their attention to other economic sectors like industry and tourism. He suggests the same for Kurdistan.

“Kurdistan needs to have a solid economic infrastructure system that includes oil, agriculture, industry and tourism. This is not impossible for a region like Kurdistan, because this region is wealthy with natural resources such as gas, oil and other raw materials,” Bilhon said.

Bilhon said he saw a hidden capability for tourism in Kurdistan. To make the most of this he suggested an “open air space” to Kurdistan to attract more flights and more tourists. Also he urged the development of more hotels, parks, amusement parks, and a central market.

“The base exists here and it is time to work on it, to make it an important center of tourism in the Middle East” said Bilhon. “The beautiful nature of Kurdistan and its nice weather separate the region from other gulf countries. Snow stays on the mountains of Kurdistan.”

He also spoke of hidden investment opportunities. Kurdistan has the two important factors of security and economic development. He further praised the KRG strategy for attracting foreign investors.

“UAE companies are very eager to do investment work in Kurdistan” he said.

Education and training: a further key to development

Abdulla Salih said he considers the education field an important factor in the development process.

“KRG needs to spend the oil revenue on strengthening the level of education and basic infrastructures” he suggested. “KRG officials need to take benefit from the experience and technology of other countries”.

UAE currently has a residential population of 5,800,000 but less than 2 millions are UAE citizens. There are more than 60 governmental and private universities. UAE exports 2.2 million barrels of oil p/d and there are 97.8 billion barrels of oil reserve which is the sixth richest oil reserve in the world. Their economy is mainly dependent on oil, gas, petrochemical, aluminum and cement as well as ship construction, medicine products and bank services.

“At first we used outside capacity to train our people for development. Then we brought in foreign laborers,” said Edris Habbush. “The first priority of Kurdistan region is to develop its security situation because foreign laborers and foreign investors are looking for one thing - stability. Once there is stability, their money will be protected and they make profit.”

Kurdistan plans to build 28 dams

Erbil, March 23 (AKnews)- Kurdistan Region minister for agriculture and water resources said Tuesday his ministry is planning to build 28 dams.

jamil sleman, waziri kishtokalJamil Suleiman told AKnews the water passing through the Kurdistan Region flows down to the central and southern Iraqi provinces almost without any obstruction since under Saddam Hussein regime no large dams were constructed on the rivers in Kurdistan.

Annually 3 billion cubic meters of Kurdistan water flows to the central and southern provinces - 60% of this water is from Kurdistan rivers and 40% from the rivers flowing into the Region.

Khapur, Great Zap, Small Zap, Sirwan all run into Kurdistan from the neighboring countries.

“In our 2011 plan we have proposed constructing 28 dams,” the minister said.

There are only three dams in Kurdistan, Dohuk, Dokan and Darbandikhan.

The neighboring countries are currently constructing more dams which will reduce the flow of water into Kurdistan, the minister said. Therefore, in the interest of water security, the Region also plans to meet with the neighbors to discuss the threats and solutions.

Brussel symposium nails significance of Kurdistan oil for EU

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Thu Apr 28, 2011 2:04 pm

11/02/2011 12:50

Brussels, Feb. 10 (AKnews) - Potential energy routes and energy security were discussed in a meeting in Brussels Thursday, where the participants highlighted the Turkish attempts to monopolize the Energy supply for the EU as well as the significance of the Kurdish energy potentials for the West.

nvestment Company of Oil in IraqThe event organized by Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and the Transatlantic Institute gathered more than 50 diplomats, politicians and international experts.

The speakers Louis Bono (Counselor for Energy in the United States Mission to the EU), Holger Krahmer (Member of the European Parliament from Alliance of Liberals and Democrats) and Jason F. Isaacson (Director of Government and International Affairs for American Jewish Committee) presented the different solutions for Europe’s energy needs. The speakers stressed the importance of diversification of energy sources and alternative lines of transmission in order to reduce the energy dependence of Europe and the West.

Bono from the United States Mission to the EU emphasized the important potential of the Kurdistan Region’s oil and gas resources for the West and pointed out that only a sustainable solution of the Kurdish and other ethnic and neighborhood problems in the region can guarantee the security of the energy corridors.

The oil-rich Kurdistan Region is located in northern Iraq and enjoys semi-autonomous governance.

Earlier this year, January 2011, former Austrian Chancellor Dr. Wolfgang Schüssel said Europe should also diversify sources of energy supply by “looking, for instance, in the Federal Kurdish Region (Iraq).”

“Europe needs additional pipelines and alternative energy distribution flows. The Kurdish part of Iraq may become alternative partner of Europe.”

The participants in the Brussels’s Thursday meeting also alluded to the constant attempts of countries like Turkey to monopolize the energy supply for EU. They deemed while Turkey is still challenging internal issues especially the war a Kurdish faction of its population, this can be a serious threat to the security of the energy transmission lines.

The Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has staged war against Turkey since 1984 allegedly to campaign for the recognition of the ethnic rights of 20 million Kurds in Turkey, overlooked in the Turkish constitution.

Currently, Kurdistan has a capacity of 100,000 bpd and is expected to develop its fields to increase the output to 200,000, according to Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Natural Resource, Ashti Hawrami.
The revenues of the Kurdistan oil import are transferred to the Iraqi government’s accounts.

RWE, a key shareholder in the Nabucco project which is aimed to bring up to 31 billion cubic meters of gas per year to Europe through the Turkish lands- announced it had signed a cooperation deal with the KRG to develop and design its "domestic and export gas transportation infrastructure... creating a route to market for Kurdistan's major gas reserves."

Three hydroelectric plants to be constructed in Kurdistan

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Thu Apr 28, 2011 3:18 pm

19/12/2010 11:13

Erbil, Dec.19 (AKnews)- An official said Sunday the Kurdistan Region jointly with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will construct three hydroelectric plants across the Region.

6 killed in a station for the generation of hydroelectric power in Russia The project costs 12 million U.S. Dollars, the UNIDO will provide 75% of the fund and the rest is due from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Hamad-Amin Hawrami, an adviser at the Kurdistan Ministry of Electricity told AKnews.

One of the plants will be built on Chamanke in Dohuk province, the other on Choman River in Erbil province and the third in Balak village in Sulaimaniya province.

The Dokan and Darbandikhan hydro-power stations in Sulaimaniya are the two largest power plants in Iraq's three-province Kurdistan Regional Government.

Two of the new plants can produce one megawatt (MW) and the third can only produce 800 kilowatt (KW). Yet, the service can provide electricity for a wide area which is not covered by the national power grid.

The official expected the erection of the stations may get underway after three months.

The Kurdistan Region suffers from electricity deficiency. Its residents depend partially on governmental electricity and partially on private generators. The Region has also resorted to the neighboring Iran and Turkey for the power provision to some of its bordering territories.

Sulaimaniya, Dec.7 (AKnews)- An official from the Kurdistan Ministry of Natural Resources said Khabat refinery has started producing automobile petrol.

Ali Hassan al-BlueThe refinery is located 20 km west of Erbil, the Regional capital.

Ali Hasan Balo, an adviser at the ministry told AKnews Tuesday this is the first time the refinery produces automobile petrol. He added the refinery offers its petrol output to Kurdistan.

According to the official the plant can refine 40,000 barrels per day (bpd), 25%of which is petrol, 40% to 45% black oil, and the rest will be kerosene, gas and other fuels.

The refinery is under expansion to double its capacity, Balo noted. There is an agreement with a foreign company to add two units to the refinery, each with the capacity to refine 20,000 bpd.

In an earlier statement to AKnews, Balo has said the refinery outputs octane 91 to 97 petrol and the output can to“a considerable degree” meet the need of the Region for automobile petrol.

Ashti Hawrami, the Kurdistan minister for natural resources had said at a press conference in August that Kalak refinery west of Erbil would produce liquid gas, plane and automobile petrol in September.

There are three large and 53 small refineries in the Region. Some 40 foreign companies from 17 countries are operating in oil fields in the Region.
