Erbil, Feb.10 – A concerned source from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) - Ministry of Electricity announced that 15 towers for measuring the speed of wind in Kurdistan Region aiming for producing electricity arrived in Kurdistan.

" Via both companies of Zagros and the German Energy Team, 15 towers were brought to Kurdistan Region," general director of electricity production at the Ministry, Diyar Tahir, told The Independent National News Agency of Kurdistan (AKnews) on Tuesday.

"Five towers would be set in each of Erbil, Duhok, and Sulaimaniya cities for measuring the speed of wind," Tahir added.

"The process of measuring would take only a year, after getting the data it would become clear how much electricity could be produced from winds".

Data is weekly received from the satellites for knowing how far the Region is suitable for producing electricity from sun shine and wind.

It is been a long time Kurdistan Region was suffering from lack of electricity. As part of its efforts for uprooting electricity scarcity in the Region, KRG has been making continuous efforts for raising the level of electricity production.

Sulaimaniya hydro-electric plants under renovation with $40m

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Fri Apr 15, 2011 6:47 pm

Image

Sulaimaniya, March 11 (AKnews)- An official said two hydro-electric plants within Sulaimaniya province in the Kurdistan Region are under renovation with 40 million U.S. Dollars.

Speaking to AKnews, Sirwan Mohammed Mahmoud, the media and relations director at Sulaimaniya electricity office said the renovation of Dokan and Darbanikhan hydro-electric plants is a project by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG, northern Iraq) which will be carried out at $40 million.

As the Kurdish official told AKnews the budget comes from a share of the $500 million international loan, which has been allotted to the Iraqi government. Kurdistan was assigned $85 million of that loan.

Othman Abdul-Rahman, the director for Dokan plant said at a recent press conference currently the protection and control systems of the plants, are under transformation.

Abdul-Rahman noted the system for Dokan was initially installed in 1987 and with the reconstruction a digital system will be introduced to the plant. The old system, in addition to difficulties related to surveillance and control, presented another issue; since it was old, if any part needed to be replaced, reserve items were hard to find.

An Italian company is implementing the changes for both plants, Abdul-Rahman added. Dokan plant director said half of the project is done so far and expected the project will be finished within one year.

Darbandikhan plant was constructed in 1961.

Kani Water Factory

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Fri Apr 15, 2011 6:48 pm

Through a completely sealed delivery system, the water is then directed straight to the factory. The water never gets into touch with air, thus reducing the risk of contamination. We believe that subjecting the water to ultra-violet rays and ozone treatment will only kill the special characteristics of the water and will influence the taste. Instead we use one of the best micro-filtration-systems in the world that guarantees that the sanctity of the pure and natural water is not violated at any cost, thus preserving the aesthetic property of the water.

As a forward-looking company Kani Water has focused its future on innovation and business excellence. The well equipped PET bottling plant, which can produce up to 10,000 bottles per hour, was the first of its kind to be set up in the region, and reflects our desire to keep pace with technological advances.

Kani Water operates a state-of-the-art bottling facility located next to the source in Bekhal, a mountainous region in Kurdistan . The PET-plant, which can produce up to 10,000 bottles per hour, is equipped with a technically advanced laboratory for analyzing all the quality aspects from raw material to finished product, including all the chemical and microbiological analysis of water etc. The laboratory is controlled by highly qualified and experienced professionals. All production equipment is sourced from leading global leaders, which ensures that Kani Water provides a world-class quality product for its consumers.

Kurdish man to open airplane factory in Kurdistan

Image

August 27, 2010

ERBIL-Hewlêr, Kurdistan region 'Iraq', — Nariman Anwar, a 33 year old from Erbil, is a man who had a dream. From a young age, he desperately wanted to build planes. After he began aged 14, building a radio-controlled model, he has gone on to build a total of seven aircraft, completely to his own designs and specifications.

Known to his friends as ‘Nariman The Pilot’ two of his designs have taken to the skies with him at the controls. In 2007, Nariman was given the Youth Of The Year Award for his great creative capacity by the Kurdistan Ministry of Youth and Sport. News of his feat even reached the Kurdistan Regional Government’s President, Massoud Barzani, who recently arranged a personal audience with the aircraft builder.

‘The President asked me how he could support talented people in the region,’ says Nariman. ‘I asked him to open a centre for people with talent in the region.
The aircraft of Nariman Anwar. niqash org
I know so many talented people in Kurdistan who just need a boost to fulfil it.’

Nariman is one person who continued to pursue his dream despite facing many obstacles. He never went to university because of his family’s poverty and instead joined his father’s company as an apprentice electrician.

There were many other problems, too. His very first plane was built just a year after Iraqi troops were driven out of Kuwait. He continued on his path throughout the sanctions period and onwards after the US-led invasion of 2003.

Despite Iraq remaining under the UN’s Chapter 7 provisions, which have hampered his progress, Nariman has produced two flying aircraft, the Zodiac and his latest, the slightly worryingly-named Stall 710SH. He was able, at great expense, to obtain many parts from abroad with the help of the KRG, from countries including the USA, France, Germany and the Ukraine.

‘Making planes cost me a lot of money. I sold all my possessions, including my house. In the beginning, no on helped me with money,’ says Nariman.

‘When people noticed that I was successful, people like the Erbil Governor, Nawzad Hadi, did, as well as a couple of prominent businessmen. Now, the President [Massoud Barzani] is my biggest support.’

The planes that Nariman made went through hours of testing on the ground and were subject to numerous approvals from the Kurdish Interior Ministry along with aviation authorities before they could take to the sky. Nariman, however always had complete faith in his designs and was confident they would fly safely.

‘I have never felt any danger when flying,’ he boasts. ‘I’m not scared of taking my planes into the air. If I were scared, I would not make them in the first place.’

He has rarely suffered any worrying moments while flying his designs but it has still taken some time to gain the full confidence of his family and friends, who, in the early days, felt nervous about joining him for flights.

‘When I first built my plane, people were afraid to fly with me. They doubted the quality but now they are much less scared,’ he reveals.

While it is understandable that the homemade aircraft might have put some people off in the beginning, Nariman built his skills on courses with some of the world’s top engineers in huge companies such as Bosch in Germany and Aston Martin,http://www.ekurd.neta British sports car manufacturer. He has also worked in Turkey and at the Zinth Air Plane Manufacturing Company in China. The KRG President is helping Nariman to continue his progress.

‘When President Barzani visited Germany recently, he asked Airbus to open a training course for me. Soon I will go back to Germany to be trained by Airbus for six months,’ Nariman explains.

The course will enable Nariman to bring back even more skills to his small team of assistants who have worked with him so far on plane building. He currently has four apprentices, all of whom he has tried to develop as manufacturers in their own right. Nariman’s ambitions, though, extend beyond continuing to build homemade aircraft with his small team. He hopes to move onwards and start building an aircraft manufacturing factory in Harir, a sub-district of Erbil.

‘About 150 people will work in the factory,’ he says. ‘A university degree is not essential but it is important that everyone working there can show their talent, that they have energy and a real desire to work.’

With the help of the KRG, who hope to use Nariman’s aircraft in agriculture, tourism and for their police force, Nariman hopes that the new factory will help foster a manufacturing industry in Kurdistan and also make a name for the region as home to a genuinely creative population. He is designing aircraft that he hopes are specifically suited to the Kurdish environment.

‘We have a few slightly different designs for Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) aircraft. The reason I decided to build STOL aircraft is because they work particularly well with Kurdistan’s geography. We will build two-, four- and six-seat planes mainly for use by the government.’

The young innovator has come a long way since building his ‘small, red, radio-controlled plane’ back in 1992. He now hopes that his resilience and relentless determination will make things easier for future generations of designers, who will not have to go through the same hardships as him.

‘Here in Kurdistan, you only get support and encouragement when you are already successful. There needs to be more help for people trying to get started,’ he advises. ‘Talented people must never quit when trying to fulfill their dreams. When I told people I was going to build and fly my own plane, people told me I was crazy. Now, of course, they congratulate me.’

As Iraq opens up to the rest of the world and as more individual examples like Nariman appear to prove the possibilities that exist for Iraqis, a real opportunity will grow for Iraq’s manufacturing industries and reputation for innovation to take-off.

The Erbil-Ifraz water treatment plant

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Fri Apr 15, 2011 6:51 pm

The Ifraz the second largest (dollar-wise) construction project in the country, coming in right around the $191 million mark.
Ifraz water treatment plant on the banks of the Zab River

Like similar treatment plants around the world, various filters here remove solid waste, and chemicals like chlorine disinfect the water. "By World Health standards this water has to be five parts per million," said York. "As you can see we are coming out not even one part per million."

The facility produces 6,000 cubic meters of clean water an hour and pumps it to the city, 32 kilometers away.

Initially the water pressure produced by Ifraz caused leaks in many of the city's existing water mains.

Those neighborhoods not connected to Ifraz still rely on deep wells owned by the city. Mashood Omar operates a well that serves about 1,000 homes. He says there is no testing for water quality, and service is sporadic. "There are three pipes, and we open one pipe per day," he said.

KRG offers loan for building agricultural cold storages

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Fri Apr 15, 2011 6:57 pm

Image

The Kurdistan Regional Minister of Agriculture said the Kurdish government will offer financial support to the farmers for building fruit and vegetable cold storages.

jamil sleman waziri kishtokalJamil Sulaiman told AKnews each of the three provinces of Kurdistan (Dohuk, Erbil and Sulaimaniya) require five such storages, along three additional ones for the Garmiyan area.

The Kurdish ministry has agreed to allot a five-year loan of 500,000,000 Iraqi Dinars (IQD)- nearly 428,449 U.S. Dollars to any farmer who undertakes to build one such construction.

Garmiyan is a wide multiethnic area that the Kurdish officials claim its tenure.

The offer is to support the agricultural sector in Kurdistan, the minister stressed.

Media reports suggest that Kurdistan depends heavily on Iran for the import of vegetables and fruit since its local output volume cannot meet even “half of” the needs of its residences.

Bahjat Mohammed, the agricultural director in Dohuk province applauded the stride by the government. Nevertheless, he urged the officials to “duplicate” the refund period in the interest of the undertaking farmers.

German auto-maker to hold workshop in Kurdistan

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Mon Apr 18, 2011 12:45 pm

Image

Erbil, April 18 (AKnews)- German automaker MAN is planning to hold a workshop in Kurdistan Region's capital city Erbil as it is working to expand its market here.german trucks in istanbul

In Kurdistan Region, it is the the price that caches the eyes of the Kurdish people when considering a MAN vehicle purchase rather than quality, efficiency and consistency, says Helmut Gnädig, Managing Director of Terramar Company for General Trading L.L.C which represents MAN, therefore, the workshop is to reverse that perception.

The workshop also features a MAN spare parts show on April 30 where the Kurdish public is given a close look and a better understanding with regards to their price vs quality attitude.

“In April show we will exhibit the fake, second hand and genuine parts, the virtues and deficiencies of each category" Gnädig said.

Mr Gnädig explains to AKnews that people here have been reluctant to buy genuine spare parts since they opened their office in the region in 2005, and the would have their trucks services not in MAN workshops but in other local workshops with fake or second hand parts for their cheap prices, Gnädig said.

MAN group maintains 5 sales offices in Iraq since 2005. One in Erbil represented by Terramar, another in Sulaimaniya represented by Muenchen Company. The rest of the offices are maintained in Baghdad, Basra and Hilla cities.

MAN has been one of the persistent participators in the international fairs opened in Kuristan Region since 2005.

According to Gnädig, there are over 5,000 MAN trucks in service in Iraq and Kurdistan Region, most of them second hand.

Plan for establishing a MAN assembply center in Iraq have also been discouraged by the fact that people here prefer to buy second hand or even fake MAN vehicles or spare parts, according to Gnädig.

" The trend of introducing the fake and second hand parts as well as whole vehicles continues, therefore, the company has not considered establishing an assembly land in Iraq" he said.

But they are planning to open a second garage in Erbil, as it seems their business is moving slowly.

"Sometimes driver come from Baghdad to Erbil to buy the original parts for their trucks" the official says.

Though Mr Gnädig complained of low market in Kurdistan, but he was not generally "unhappy" with business in the region.
