Names ending in the "-o" suffix are of male gender...

Names ending in the "-ê" suffix are of female gender...

"Karê" = female

"Karo" = male


"Sêvê" = female

"Sêvo" = male

etc...

These suffixes are usually used to shorten down long names or in the case of Kurmancî to determine the gender of the person when refering to him/her in third person:

"Min gote Sêvê here dikanê" = "I told Sêv to go to the store"
"Sêvê gote min here dikanê" = "Sêv told me to go to the store"

This basically means that the name "Sêv" is female - not male (which would have been "Sêvo") - when refering in third person, one will add the "-ê" suffix to determine the indirect object (in this case "Sêv")...

You did? Well I've read some pretty lame Kurdish name-books... They had some very unrealistic and hilarious suggestions for names for both genders... Some I had never heard of before - which is okey, since a name can be anything - and we can create new ones - BUT there ARE certain rules to go by in ANY given language...

Now the "-o" ending IS used for females in very FEW cases, such as "Eysho", "Fato" etc. - but these are irregulars...
