European Court backs Belgium ban on halal slaughter

Animal Rights Come Before Religion

Image

About one year ago Denmark banned kosher and halal slaughter

As far as I know it has vastly improved the well-being of animals prior to their despatch and the complaints of the Muslim and Jewish communities have long since faded away

Image

I have always been in favour of banning halal and kosher slaughter :ymapplause:

I am OK to ban halal-kosher slaughter but only if it is in a pack which ban all cruel and unealthy to breed animals and poultry, and support organic farming and breeding.

And also ban palm oil (as in Nutella) which destroy forests and monkeys, etc. And eating local produces.

In fact I am for a general reform of all our alimentation system.

Banning halal and kosher slaughter is a step in the right direction :D

But it is only a small step :-s

We as humans have no right to destroy other life forms

If we as humans are stupid enough to take part in wars and kill each other that is our own fault

When animals kill it is normally for food

Humans just seem to destroy each other for the fun of it X(

A British butcher will have undergone many years of training and learnt all about hygiene and animal husbandry - how to spot illness in animals and prevent them from entering the food chain - how to dispatch an animal with the minimum of distress

A British butcher will also have learnt how to use ALL the meat from any given animal - the smaller the percentage of the meat used from the animals carcasses - the larger number of innocent animals slaughtered

Muslim butchers are not trained to same level X(

We must not only ban halal slaughter in the UK

We must ban the import of halal meat entirely

If someone cannot eat UK food then

DO NOT COME TO THE UK

You can not ban halal meat without banning kosher meat and I wonder how many protests you are going to face from all jewish British citizens and from Israel also.

If UK faces a boycott of its own products from Jews all around the world and from Muslim countries it will be hard to export British products abroad, as it is already finished to export to EU. :D

Many Jews will eat anything not just kosher food - though mostly in their own homes

This stems from older family members who were in the German death camps and have passed on their beliefs that any and all food is expectable as we all need to eat food to live - those who were survivors of the death camps ate anything they could whilst in there and continued to do so once they were free

The other side is that many Jews do not feel right in confining their children to the ultra-strict Jewish laws

Strict orthodox Jews will not allow a non-Jewish friend into their homes - young people want to be more integrated :ymhug:

Halal-slaughtered animals are 'dying in agony' because of 'Muslim ignorance' over pre-slaughter stunning, say experts

Under Islamic law Muslims can only consume meat that is deemed 'halal'
The animal must be alive when its throat cut and be allowed to bleed out
However Islamic scholars are divided over whether stunning is acceptable
Experts say this is because some are ignorant of the welfare benefits

Animals are dying in unnecessary agony because of a lack of understanding over how stunning stops them feeling pain when their throats are cut, research shows.

In conventional slaughterhouses, cows, sheep and chicken are stunned, usually with an electric shock, to ensure they are unconscious before their throats are cut.

This minimises suffering but in a number of Muslim abattoirs the animals are not stunned over fears it is not permissible, or 'halal'.

In a number of Muslim abattoirs animals are not stunned before slaughter over fears it is not permissible, or 'halal' but research suggests this is due to ignorance of the process.

A study by researchers at the University of Bristol suggests some Islamic scholars are ignorant about the humaneness of stunning, leading to animals dying in pain,The Times reported.

Widespread research shows the welfare benefits of pre-slaughter stunning. The electric shocks lessen the pain felt by animals when their throats are cut.

A number of industry bodies have spoken out against the slaughtering of animals without pre-stunning, with the British Veterinary Association saying there is an 'unacceptable time lapse between slaughter and the onset of permanent insensibility [loss of feeling] when animals are not stunned'.

Animals must also be stunned before slaughter under EU regulations.

However Britain allows an exemption for those who oppose because of religious beliefs and the number of animals killed without stunning appears to be on the rise.

RITUAL KILLING OF ANIMALS FOR RELIGIOUS REASONS BY SAVAGES X(

HALAL

Halal slaughtering involves cutting through the large arteries in the neck with one swipe of a blade, while a Muslim butcher recites a religious verse.

All blood is then drained away since the consumption of blood is forbidden under Islamic law.

Under Islamic law, an animal must be slaughtered by having its throat cut while it is conscious.

KOSHER

According to the laws, in order for a meat to kosher it must come from an animal that meets the kosher rules.

These are the animal must be ruminant and have split hooves. Ruminant animals chew food once and swallow, before regurgitating it and chewing again.

Animals that Jews can eat include cows, sheep, goats and deer.

They cannot eat pigs despite the fact it has split hooves because it is not a ruminant animal.

Before slaughtering, the animal must be healthy and uninjured and a sharp knife is used to slice through the main arteries and windpipe, causing a drop in blood pressure that causes the animal to lose consciousness. Jews believe this is a way of killing that shows 'respect and compassion' as set out in Jewish law.

Some 2.4 million sheep and goats were put to death using the religious method in halal and kosher abattoirs in 2013 – a rise of 60 per cent on 2011.

According to analysis by the Food Standards Agency, some 37 per cent of sheep and goats, 25 per cent of cattle and 16 per cent of poultry were killed in this way in halal premises.

Researchers from the University of Bristol School of Veterinary Science questioned Islamic scholars and Halal consumers on the use of pre-slaughter stunning.

The study is published in the journal Meat Science.

Some 69 per cent of scholars said they did not agree that stunning prior to slaughter had been showed to reduce the pain felt by animals, according to The Times.

However more than 95 per cent of the scholars and 53 per cent of consumers agreed that if stunning did not result in death, cause physical injury or obstruct bleed-out, the meat would be considered Halal.

The study said: 'The lack of understanding of stunning among some scholars has resulted in the issuance of confusing fatwas on the suitability of stunned meat for consumption by Muslims.

'There is an urgent need for these scholars to be given theoretical and practical education on stunning and other modern slaughter techniques such as mechanical slaughter.

'This will help them make informed decisions about the suitability of these techniques for Halal production.'

Gudrun Ravetz, president of the British Veterinary Association said: 'Our view is that all animals should be stunned before slaughter, based on peer reviewed evidence that indicates an unacceptable time lapse between slaughter and the onset of permanent insensibility when animals are not stunned.

Britain allows an exemption for those who oppose because of religious beliefs and the number of animals killed without stunning appears to be on the rise. File image

'A number of notable bodies including the Farm Animal Welfare Committee and the EU Food Safety Authority all agree that there is a high probability that the cutting of sensitive tissues at the neck will trigger a significant pain response in a conscious animal.

'Given the barrage of evidence about the humaneness of stunning before slaughter the veterinary profession is persuaded that animals must be stunned.

'This study highlights worrying misconceptions about what constitutes humane slaughter and underlines the need for dialogue and education so that there is a consistent understanding of the welfare benefits of pre-stunning.'

first of all let me educate u guys, since u haven't done any research :ymapplause:
Halal means permissible which means, water is halal, vegetables are halal everything is halal except what is stated to be (not permissible) haram, like alcohol and pork and drugs and other...
secondly, that meat burger ur eating right, yes that meat was from an animal that was electrocuted or shot dead, they feel the pain while they are dying! while slaughtering the animal is actually the least painful way because its from the neck and so they die much faster. And u can search up the benefits of slaughtering compared to shooting again DO UR RESEARCH !!
Finally... the animals are not allowed to see if another animals are being killed so they don't kill the animals in front of the others, its part of the process, it looks like u haven't done ur research...
oh and u cant ban halal food because the UK economy gains a lot of money anyways from selling it. plus ur being insensitive to the Islamic religion where they are only permitted to eat meat that has been slaughtered rather than shot of electrocuted. imagine I said
vegetarian foods should be banned, thats insensitive cuz its vegetarians only option, so please guy atop being dumb,,, I am British just in case ur wondering

You have been misinformed and have obviously never been into a halal slaughter house so I refuse to get into an argument

You come here you eat out food and comply with our laws simple

I go to another country I will eat their food, apart from halal food, and I will comply with their laws

Many of us travel worldwide and always comply with the laws of each country

We would NOT expect to enforce our laws onto any other country we visit, or settle in

RSPCA calls for BAN on non-stun slaughter
It causes UNNECESSARY SUFFERING

The animal charity has teamed up with the British Veterinary Association (BVA) to campaign for a change in the law, which currently allows slaughter without pre-stunning for religious purposes. All kosher slaughter for Jews and some halal slaughter for Muslims involves cutting the animal’s throat while they are conscious and able to feel pain. The RSPCA and the BVA are demanding the Government outlaws the practice due to animal welfare fears.

And they are urging for other steps to be taken including labelling meat with the slaughter method so customers are clear about what they are buying.

RSPCA chief executive Chris Sherwood said: “We’re opposed to non-stun slaughter and we’re calling for an end to the practice as it seriously compromises animal welfare.

Both the RSPCA and the British Veterinary Association are the UK experts on animal suffering and care.

This year Belgian banned both the Muslim and Jewish ways of ritually slaughtering animals and there is a great deal of support for such a ban in other countries.

I think that whatever the way to kill, secular, halal or kosher, the big slaughtering houses vs traditional small structures make the difference.

I saw in Kurdistan how farmer kill a sheep or a goat. It is quick and without violence. In our industries of slaughtering, workers have to kill hundred and hundred of animals in a short time. So they treat them as luggage carriers treat our bags in airports.

Animals are sentient beings with feelings and fears

The worst part of all this slaughter, is that more than half the meat gained from this disgusting slaughter is actually thrown away as human greed urges people to buy much more than they will need or use. Sad to say, half of these slaughtered animals died for nothing :ymsick:

Agreed that small farms who slaughter their own animals do so as kindly and quickly as possible, generally because the animals are known to the the farmer. He will have fed them, looked after the animals needs and watched the animals grow

In the UK both the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and the British Veterinary Association, have had many dealings with and complaints against Halal slaughter houses. Some of the complaints and actual video footage often comes from disgusted workers within the slaughter houses

This disgusting practise needs to be banned X(

Vegetarian pupil disqualified from
GCSE after criticising halal meat

A student was disqualified from her GCSE exam after she was accused of making “obscene racial comments” by criticising halal meat

Abigail Ward, 16, a strict vegetarian, wrote during a Religious Studies exam in June that she found the idea of halal meat "absolutely disgusting"

The exam board OCR later disqualified Miss Ward from the exam, accusing her of making "obscene racial comments". X(

The decision was only overturned when her school, Gildredge House in Eastbourne, appealed the decision, insisting Miss Ward had been expressing her distaste for halal butchers and was not making any comment about Muslims.

The school added that no other comments made in the paper could be construed as racist.

The exam board upheld the appeal and later apologised for the “upset and stress” they caused Miss Ward, the Telegraph reported.

It also accepted that the board's original letter "describing the frequency and severity of the comments" was "inaccurate".

Miss Ward’s mother Layla, a 36-year-old nurse, said she believed the misunderstanding was probably down to an “over-zealous, over-righteous” examiner.

She told the paper: “Abbey is an animal lover and a very strict vegetarian.

“Philosophy is all about debating and getting your opinion out. I can’t believe how pathetic it is."

In a statement, OCR said: "OCR takes all incidence of suspected offensive material against a religious group in exams very seriously and must apply rules which are set out for all exam boards in such cases.

"We accept that initially we did not reach the right conclusion and were too harsh."

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/vege ... 15746.html

The slaughter of innocent animals is disgusting - halal slaughter even more so, for the most part, those who slaughter fail to comply with the Quranic guidelines on animal slaughter

Also, Halal butchers do NOT undergo the same high standards of training that UK butchers undergo

People of all ages are becoming vegetarian and the numbers are expected to continue growing

Already, many people worldwide are calling for the banning of animal slaughter and the closure of slaughterhouses. It is expected that Halal slaughterhouses will be the first to be closed

Young people are our future and should be encouraged to protect animals
