Ministers take steps to deepen and expand cooperation with Britain in higher education and research


London, UK – ( – The Kurdistan Regional Government Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr Ali Saeed, last week met with British ministers and universities to deepen and expand cooperation in the higher education and scientific research sectors.

Minister Saeed led a delegation from the Kurdistan Region’s Council of Ministers and Ministry of Higher Education, accompanied by the KRG UK Representation.

During the week-long visit, the delegation attended the British Embassy business event, organised by the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) in celebration of the Olympics, to highlight the educational opportunities and partnerships between the UK and the rest of the world.

During this event the KRG delegation had the opportunity to meet Lord Green Minister of State for Trade and Investment, David Willetts MP Minister of State for Universities and Science, and Alistair Burt MP FCO Minister of State for the Middle East.

The British Ministers highlighted the good relationship the UK has with the KRG and looked forward to developing this cooperation further, especially in the higher education sector. David Willetts in his speech highlighted how the UK and the KRG have been able to work successfully together in strengthening the higher education exchanges. He said the cooperation with Kurdistan sets an example of how Britain can work governments in other countries around the world.

The KRG delegation also met with Martin Davidson CEO of the British Council to discuss ways they can engage more with the Kurdistan Region. Minister Saeed asked the British Council to increase the number of IELTS tests - the world's leading test of English for higher education - available in the region to meet with the high demand of the Kurdish students who receive the KRG’s Human Capacity Development Programme (HCDP) scholarship programme and plan to study in the UK.

In addition, the delegation also visited the Leicester University where they met the University’s Vice Chancellor Sir Robert Burgess.Sir Robert noted that he was delighted with the academic progress of the Kurdish students undertaking their masters and PhD programmes at the university under the HCDP scholarship programme.

The KRG UK Representation with the support of University of Leicester also hosted a seminar for the Kurdish students on the HCDP scholarship scheme in the UK, to inform them of new developments within the programme. The seminar also provided an opportunity for the students to discuss their progress, and share their challenges and successes stories with the government officials.

The KRG UK Representation provides extensive support to the HCDP students studying throughout the UK as well as encourage more scientific and research collaborations between universities in Britain and Kurdistan. The successful partnership forged between the University of Leicester and the University of Kurdistan – Halwer in establishing an English language centre is a pivotal example of the successful cooperation with the UK in the higher education sector.
