Hey, I just registered on the forum and thought I would introduce myself.

My name is Justin and I'm from the United States in the Midwest.

The reason why I joined this website is because I have a friend who is Kurdish, and through her I have learned a lot about Kurdistan and its rich history.

Recently, she moved to Zakho from Erbil and has been feeling lonely. I thought I would cheer her up with some flowers, but when I tried to find a florist that would deliver to Zakho I couldn't find anything good, and the one I tried couldn't process my order (perhaps they couldn't process American credit cards). Would anyone have any recommendations for me? Any help would be appreciated. Zor spas!

I am sure your friend will quickly make some new friends in Zakho

I imagine that as an unmarried young woman, she is still with her family and very probably has other relations in Zakho

Zakho has a terrible history - some horrendous things happened there many years ago - as you have an interest in Kurds you could ask her do some research the history. That will keep her busy and give her an interest as she starts to meet new people

It will be very difficult to send anything there - but Piling will know more about that

One thought. I know nothing about your relationship BUT if she is with her family, they might not be happy about their young single daughter receiving gifts

There is a problem with fresh flowers in Kurdistan : they don't sell it, nor buy it. They LOVE ugly artificial flowers. So it is very uncommon to buy fresh flowers.

The other problem is the system to pay with a credit card : It is very rare there and many people don't have even a bank account. Most of transactions and salaries are in cash.

Kurds in the UK often use hideous plastic flowers

I love pots of growing miniature roses and pots of growing mint - I love the fresh mint smell

As in Syria the political system was baathist, so half-socialist half fascism. There was no private enterprise nor private bank. There was only a State-Bank, in which people never gave their money, as all the State was a gang of thieves… Only people who had the power trust the Bank, because it was their own personal possession…

But in most of the case Saddam and his family and his tribe did hide their money abroad.

All the financial transaction, and lean and speculation of ordinary citizens was in cash.

Now there are many banks in Kurdistan, Turkish, Lebanon, etc. but people don't use them a lot for their daily life. It would be uneasy : no cheque, no credit card… And cash-desk are not common, there are only in some malls and big hotels.

The other reason is that you can keep your money at home, there are no robbers in Kurdistan. You can walk in the street with your money, no one would attack you. There are no pick-pockets.

One of the main reasons I like Kurds is their honesty and I have never had any qualms about having Kurdish students staying with me

Welcome to the forum Justin. Instead of flowers, you can send her a gift from America. I am sure she will be thrilled. In Kurdistan flower culture almost doesn't exist.

True, Kurds there love things from abroad. You can send gift by DHL (or may be other companies, but I know that DHL is everywhere).

It depends ont the woman's taste. Generally, Kurdish women are very "coquette" and love fashion, luxe, perfume, "French romance", etc. So it is easy from France to find something. In Duhok, there is in the bazar a shop that sells ONLY Tour Eiffel, from all sizes, the bigger is about one meter.

From America, I don't know. Better to ask to some Kurdish people from USA.

Difficult because most people have mobile phones and only a few businessmen/women wear watches. Then they will be top of the range mega expensive ones. Cheaper watches are all at ultra cheap giveaway prices on sites such as Amazon and Ebay

Clothes are difficult, especially shoes as sizes vary so much. Depending on the manufacturer, I take a size 5, 5.5 or a size 6. Also, like many other people nowadays, I do not wear leather

Handbags are almost as difficult to buy. As with the shoes, I do not buy leather. I only buy non-leather trendy Kipling bags
