Bonjour, from Montreal

PostAuthor: Roojin » Mon Nov 10, 2008 4:30 pm

Hello!
How is everyone? My name is Roojin, and I am currently a student at McGill University, in Quebec, Canada, studying science, specifically biology.

I am a kurd from both my mother and my father's side (an Iranian Kurd).

Unfortunately, being born in Canada, I have little knowledge of the Kurdish language. I would love to be able to speak fluently, and will endeavour to do so in the next few years.

Thanks for your time,
Roojin

Hey Talsor and thank you! Are you from Montreal as well? Or some city close by? Haha, yes well I have found zero Kurdish people in Montreal so far to talk to in parties. I really want to go back to Kermanshah, and visit my relatives there. Being with Kurds is so much fun. My grandmother speaks Kurdish, and I understand faintly what she says, since it is similar to farsi.

Sîver, thank you for the warm welcome! I actually have my first question: How do I pronounce your name? Does it rhyme with a similar word in English or Farsi?

Merci, Qashimlo, je suis bien heureuse ces jours. Vous parlez français aussi? C'est bien! I hope this forum will help me out. I think its crucial that I learn the tongue that my ancestors have spoken for eternity. Kurdish is a beautiful, warm and ancient language.

Heh, well Londoner, it was close enough :D I think though, I should be called Mademoiselle haha :)

Thanks Matin. I think Roojin is a common name among Kurds am I right? But in Canada, people have lot of difficulty pronouncing my name; most of them have never heard of it before.

Yea, Roojin is a common name among Kurds. There is a famous singer from North Kurdistan named Rojin. There is also Rojan, a singer from East Kurdistan (Iranian Kurdistan). But i thought they would have less trouble pronouncing Roojin in Montreal because j in French is the same as j in Kurdish. But in English, they don't even have a j sound (like in bonjour).

Hmm, well the French say my name in a very unique way; since to them, it is very similar to the colour rouge. But in Montreal, there are lots of anglophones, and for them I have to repeat my name 5 times before they get it right. When they say it at first, they think its very choppy and discontinuous; they can't make the rolling "j" sound very easily. The French can.

Haha, I have never been to Ottawa. Although I study in Montreal, my family lives in Toronto, so I pass by there a lot, but I have never actually stepped foot in Ottawa lol :) . I've heard Ottawa is beautiful though! Very eco-friendly with all those bicyclists!

Oh wow, the concert must have been amazing! Yes, please do keep me posted. And now I'm convinced that there has to be a good number of Kurdish parties here too, since Ottawa and Montreal are so close, so I will update you on that as well.
