New treatment to prevent legs amputation for diabetes

Japanese researchers from Osaka University developed a new technique to enhance blood vessels renewal which grants hope to diabetes patients facing legs amputation caused by blood clotting in vessels.
Researchers discovered delicate particles that stick on the surface of cells usually injected from bones marrow to avoid amputation, and prevent these cells from moving to other parts of the body or even causing death.
The treatment was successfully tested on mice after delicate particles clung to 70% of the cells stopping them from migrating to other parts of the body and regenerated vessels numbers was multiplied by 7. The Japanese team is planning to launch clinical trials in 3 years in preparation for the permanent application of the treatment.
“We hope that this new treatment works because it might help many patients and prevent losing their legs,” leading researcher Shinya Fukumoto expressed.
About 10 thousand diabetes patients lose their legs every year due to disease complications. Diabetes is increasing around the world and patients count today about 366 million persons out of which 4 millions die every year from type 1 and type 2 diabetes, International diabetes federation figures revealed.
