True Darcy is what we call in French a "beau ténébreux".

Meet the Jane Austen Society of Pakistan

The obsession with marriage and the courtship rituals of Regency England are all alive in Pakistani society today, according to one group of women.

Two hundred years after the death of Jane Austen, some of her biggest fans are an eclectic bunch of well-educated women who dress up regency-style and discuss her work over high tea in the country's second-largest city, Lahore.

Very interesting. In Kurdistan also they should have to read Austen, for their society is so Regency (obsessed by marrying a wealthy man).

But Kurds hardly read  Kurdish women and girls could learn many useful things from Aunt Jane, though.

I discover the existence of Mrs Margaret Oliphant and his "Victorian Emma". She admired Austen a lot, but is quite absolutely unknown in France.

I

Translating Oliphant I did need to know the gender of theRector's 'neighbor' at table :

The Rector communicated gravely with his next neighbour,

Why ? because in French we say 'son voisin de table' or 'sa voisine de table' according to their gender. So I wonder what could the most probable 'neighbour' a rector could have at a dinner party. In France, we alternate male/female. But in Victorian England ?

found that interesting post about victorian code in dinner party and I think that most of these rules were the same for a dinner party in Regency period at Pemberley:

http://gabrielle-meyer.blogspot.com/201 ... inner.html

he Before Dinner Interval:
At some point before dinner is announced, the hostess will discreetly point out to each gentleman the lady he will escort to dinner. He shall serve her throughout the meal.

So I can decide that even a church man should have a she-neighbor, probably the hostess.

It was also the man's duty to pay attention to his companion's needs and keep her entertained :D

Imagine the so talkative Mr Darcy trying to entertain a Lady =)) =)) =)) :

Mr Darcy (thinking he has to say something) :
– mmmmmm................. ahem ahem...........

The Lady, trying to hear the sound of his voice :
- Delicious fish, isn't it , Mr Darcy ?

Mr Darcy, after a deep and silent cogitation :
– It is tolerable; but not tasty enough to tempt me.
