Contesting Kurdish Identities in Sweden
Quest for Belonging among Middle Eastern Youth
Barzoo Eliassi
Contesting Kurdish Identities in Sweden explores how young Kurdish immigrants living in Sweden experience and articulate their ideas about citizenship rights, belonging, and statehood as they are shuttled between different citizenship regimes and exclusive structures of belonging. Unlike immigrants who come to Sweden from countries where their groups are dominant, Kurds who immigrate to Sweden re-occupy a minoritized position; they do so not merely under the marginalized label of "Kurd," common in the Middle East, but under other, overlapping identity categories that are equally negative and loaded. Examining how national and ethnic conflicts in the Middle East continue to impinge on Kurdish youths' identities in Sweden, Barzoo Eliassi highlights the gulf between a rhetoric of equality and the lived experience of cultural, political, and economic subordination. He argues that, despite important theoretical deliberations about cosmopolitanism and post-nationalism, the international nation-state system has created a global apartheid that divides the world into nations with states and nations without, where the latter continue to be treated as anomalous and politically, legally, and socially superfluous.

Yes, we're kurds in middle-east. In Europe we're muslim wogs, it doesn't take a academic book to explain imo. Kurd is a useless identity in the west, because by the european descendent majority you're viewed as a muslim first and foremost before anything, and in middle-east no such thing as muslim and wog exists, ethnicity and sect does however.

Not really, it's fairly simple. The overwhelming westerners are too ignorant to make more than simple distinctions and identities, like kurd or shiah, or sunni or arab or turk. All those nouns are estoeric to westerners. Equally, i know next to nothing about french provincial divsions and accents and general provincialism. I'm not saying the book is useless, the topic is too estoeric, deep and complicated for the average person. It's not to demean the work of barzoo eliassi, but it's the truth.

Many foreign historians know France better than my butcher. If a Kurd is a scholar in European Middle Age he knows that topic better than myself.

At the contrary I met many Kurds (or others) who know NOTHING about their own past. You don't born with a knowledge of 500 hundreds in your genes.

In any case, Barzoo does not write for a large public, he is a scholar and writes for students and scholars and sociologists who are able to understand him.
