Neo-Nazi terror threat grows

The arrest of two heavily armed French neo-Nazis returning from Ukraine highlights a looming problem for NATO states sponsoring the proxy war, and their conspiracy of silence on the nature of the threat

On April 24th 2023, two French neo-Nazis were jailed for 15 months, nine of which were suspended, for possessing assault rifle ammunition. The pair had returned to Paris from Ukraine two days earlier, and were arrested at customs.

Both were on the radar of French domestic spying agency DGSI, which held files on them for endangering state security. According to the French outlet Mediapart, one was a veteran of Chasseurs Alpins (Alpine Hunters), France’s elite mountain infantry force. He was thrown out of the military after his neo-Nazi sympathies were exposed online. The other is a notorious local far-right activist.

As in many other Western countries, hundreds of French citizens have traveled to Kiev to take up arms against Russia since it invaded Ukraine in February 2022. According to the DGSI, at least 30 of the French foreign fighters are known fascists.

This shocking outflow has failed to generate any English-language media interest, however, save for March 2022, when far-right militant Loïk Le Priol was deported home from Hungary en route to Ukraine, to face charges of murdering Argentinian rugby player Federico Martín Aramburú in Paris.

It was inevitable that some of the French Neo-Nazis who managed to make the journey to Kiev had pre-existing links with Azov Battalion, Ukraine’s notorious Neo-Nazi paramilitary. In January 2022, Paris banned the white supremacist group Zouaves. Its members had violently attacked anti-racist protesters disrupting a rally for far-right presidential candidate Eric Zemmour the previous month. The movement’s leader, Marc de Cacqueray-Valmenier, traveled to Ukraine in December 2019 to meet with representatives of Azov, and attend its training camps.

Since the war in Ukraine began, Ouest Casual, a still-extant Telegram channel linked to Zouaves, has published a steady stream of tributes to Ukrainian soldiers, repeatedly denouncing the “Asiatic contingents of Soviet imperialism once again sweeping across Europe,” and “Putin’s Islamist dogs,” in reference to Chechen fighters. Bordeaux Nationaliste, a violent Neo-Nazi group closely linked to Zouaves, has regularly organized collections of equipment for the fight.

Washington creates a powder keg in Kiev

The two newly jailed Neo-Nazis were reportedly “asked all day” by police following their arrest why they carried military equipment, possession of which is absolutely illegal under French law, into the country. An obvious answer is that the pair were planning to bring the terror of Ukraine’s battlefields back home with them.

In November, Alex Rubinstein reported for The Grayzone on how Italian police had arrested five members of the local neo-Nazi group, Order of Hagal, which maintains operational ties to Azov Battalion. They were stockpiling weapons, including ammunition, tactical gear, and a grenade launcher, and planning terror attacks. A sixth member, then-fighting alongside Azov in Ukraine, remained wanted.

The neo-Nazis had been monitored intensively by Italian authorities since 2019. One – reported to be “dangerously close to far-right Ukrainian Nationalist groups” – was planning an attack on a police station in Naples, while the fugitive Azov fighter had a shopping mall in the same city in his crosshairs.

In an intercepted January 2021 conversation, the former boasted he “would make a massacre like the one in New Zealand,” referring to the Christchurch spree shooter who murdered 51 Muslims two years earlier. That individual had emblazoned his flak jacket and the cover of his manifesto, which mentioned Ukraine, with Azov’s ubiquitous “black sun” logo.

As a 2020 investigation by West Point Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center found, that manifesto became a popular online currency among Ukrainian paramilitary groups, and was even translated into Ukrainian and sold as a book by a 22-year-old living in Kiev. The Center noted that Ukraine “holds a particular attraction for white supremacists–ideologues, activists, and adventurers alike,” explicitly due to the emergence of Azov and other state-backed fascist elements.

It was the first time since the defeat of the Nazis that “an overtly far-right white nationalist militia” anywhere in the world was “publicly celebrated, openly organizing, and [had] friends in high places.” Support from Petro Poroshenko’s government and Ukrainian security services – “despite well-documented reports of human rights abuses” – was “electrifying to far-right individuals and groups in Europe, the United States, and further afield,” the investigation noted. Fascists duly flocked in droves to Kiev to join Azov, and/or receive training.

The US and its international vassals have been keen to encourage and facilitate the proliferation of neo-Nazism in Ukraine. Throughout the Cold War, the CIA and MI6 adopted a covert policy of encouraging ultra-nationalist elements in Ukraine to undermine communist rule. In the years after the US-backed 2014 Maidan coup, numerous far-right militias received high-level military training from Washington, London, and Ottawa. Support from the West has only increased since Russia’s invasion.

Two groups that received extensive practical and material support from NATO states in recent years are Centuria and Right Sector. The indicted members of Italy’s Order of Hagal reportedly maintained “direct and frequent” contacts with both, along with Azov, seeking “possible recruitment into the ranks of these fighting groups,” according to local media.

Blowback from US covert ops in Europe

Since the West initiated its covert program of supporting violent extremists in order to weaken and destabilize its geopolitical foes, blowback has come in various forms.

Throughout the Bosnian war in the 1990s, the US supported Mujahideen fighters. They arrived on CIA “black flights” from all over the world, especially Afghanistan, and received a seemingly endless flow of weapons, in breach of a United Nations embargo.

Quickly gaining a reputation for excessive brutality against enemy soldiers and civilians alike, and false flag attacks on their own positions and public spaces in order to precipitate Western intervention, their presence was pivotal to the Bosnian Muslims’ war effort. US Balkans negotiator Richard Holbrooke has stated they “wouldn’t have survived” without the Mujahideen’s assistance.

Under the terms of the 1995 Dayton Agreement, Mujahideen fighters were required to leave Bosnia. Immediately after it was signed, Croat forces fighting alongside British and American mercenaries in the country began assassinating the group’s leadership to send the Islamists scattering. Some fled to Albania along with their US-supplied weapons, where they joined the incipient Kosovo Liberation Army, another Western-backed entity filled with hardcore jihadists.

Others were intercepted with the assistance of the CIA, and deported to their countries of origin to stand trial for serious terror offenses. This was perceived as a gross betrayal by the Mujahideen’s senior overseas leadership, which included Osama bin Laden.

In August 1998, two US embassies in East Africa were simultaneously bombed in a suicide attack. A day earlier, the bin Laden-linked Islamic Jihad published a threat, explicitly referring to US involvement in the extradition of the group’s “brothers” from Albania. It warned that an appropriate “response” was imminently forthcoming:

“We are interested in briefly telling the Americans that their message has been received and that the response, which we hope they will read carefully, is being [prepared], because we – with God’s help – will write it in the language that they understand.”

The embassy attacks marked the beginning of bin Laden’s jihad against the US, which one way or another culminated in 9/11. Two of the purported hijackers, Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar, were veterans of the Bosnian war. As The Grayzone recently reported, both may have been knowingly or unknowingly working for the CIA on the day of the attacks.

Today, an even more egregious betrayal is almost inevitably impending – namely, the US ending its support for Kiev’s war effort. Across the West, weapon stocks are almost spent, political and public pressure to exit mounts daily, and officials are openly expressing grave doubts about Ukraine’s ability to stage a successful counteroffensive, let alone recapture any lost territory in the process.

On April 24th, Politico reported that if the long-awaited counteroffensive failed, the Biden administration would end its backing outright and compel Kiev to begin negotiations with Moscow, sweetening this bitter pill by “framing it to the Ukrainians as a ‘ceasefire’ and not as permanent peace talks.” Of course, as the Ukrainian military’s operation is wholly dependent on that support, even a temporary cessation would result in total collapse, leaving Russian forces to steamroller through Ukrainian territory effectively unopposed.

Conspiracy of silence on foreign fighters in Ukraine

The total number of homegrown and foreign fascist fighters in Ukraine is not known, but is likely to be vast. When the US pulls out of the proxy war, they would have every reason to flee. They will bring with them battlefield experience, and in many cases elite Western military training. High-end weapons and ammunition will be available in abundance on the black market, due to the massive wellspring of arms shipments to Kiev over the course of the conflict.

In July 2022, Europol warned that “the proliferation of firearms and explosives in Ukraine could lead to an increase in firearms and munitions trafficked into the EU via established smuggling routes or online platforms,” and “this threat might even be higher once the conflict has ended.”
That same month, a report from the British parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee contained a brief section on the risk of Britons who had traveled overseas for “extreme right-wing terrorism purposes” having been “further radicalised” by the experience, and “developed connections with others” who share their violent ideology.

While the country they visited, and whom or what they “may have fought,” was obscured with asterisks, it is beyond doubt this section referred to fighters returning from Ukraine. The Committee ominously warned there was “no process in place” to monitor these individuals upon their arrival.

It is hard to imagine that Western intelligence officials are not aware that the powder keg they created in Kiev could erupt on their own soil. However, it also appears clear they have taken a vow of omerta on the issue, even redacting sections in their own public reports on the plague of returning foreign fighters. At the same time, they campaign zealously against the threat of homegrown right-wing extremism.

Since taking office, the Biden administration has repeatedly warned of imminent “racially or ethnically motivated” terrorist attacks by US citizens. It has even published a dedicated national security strategy to address the “challenge.”

Yet, the indictment of two American neo-Nazis in February this year generated virtually no media interest, and went largely unremarked upon by US officials. The pair, leaders of Atomwaffen – also known as the National Socialist Resistance Front – planned to destroy electrical substations serving the majority Black city of Baltimore, Maryland, in a bid to deprive residents of heat and light during Winter.

This eerie silence may be at least partially explained by Atomwaffen’s relationship with Azov Battalion, which has hosted members of the group in Kiev. One Atomwaffen figure, Caleb Kole, was sentenced in January 2022 by the US Department of Justice for plotting with accomplices to intimidate Jews and journalists. It turned out that Cole had previously visited Ukraine to attend the country’s annual neo-Nazi black metal festival known as Asgardsrei, which is held in a state-owned venue and features influential Azov activists on stage.

As Western pundits airbrush Azov’s openly fascist agenda in order to justify military aid to Ukraine, they are also obscuring the threat posed by foreign fighters returning home in droves after months in the trenches with the group

US knew plan to attack Nord Stream

A report by the Washington Post details how the CIA heard via a European espionage agency that a six-person squad of Ukrainian special operations forces intended on destroying the pipeline

According to a report by The Washington Post, the CIA knew through a European spy agency that members of a Ukrainian special operations team intended on blowing up the NordStream pipeline.

Three months before the explosion, the US administration knew from an ally of the attack whereby a small team of divers, who reported directly to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, were employed.

Details concerning the plot, previously unknown, were gathered by a European intelligence agency and provided to the CIA in June 2022. They present some of the most detailed evidence to date tying the Ukrainian government to the eventual attack in the Baltic Sea, which has been described as brazen and dangerous by the US and Western authorities.

The European intelligence reporting was shared on the chat platform Discord, allegedly by Air National Guard member Jack Teixeira.

In March, The Wall Street Journal reported that the CIA warned the German Federal Intelligence Service, BND, about a potential attack that could hit the Nord Stream pipelines months ahead of the attack taking place in September 2022.

The reporting was shared on the Discord platform by Jack Teixeira, the 21-year-old accused of being responsible for one of the most serious security breaches in the United States in years. The WaPo was able to obtain a copy of the reporting.

The details include the number of forces, and the method of the attack shows that the West had very good reason to suspect Ukraine for more than a year, a conclusion only strengthened by German law enforcement officers unearthing information concerning the explosion that bore a remarkable resemblance to what the European Union alleged Ukraine was plotting.

Ukrainian officials, who earlier denied any involvement in the Nord Stream attack, did not reply to calls for comment from the Post.

Even the White House and CIA declined to comment.

In late May, German news outlet Der Spiegel reported that indications of Ukraine's involvement in the sabotage operation on the Nord Stream gas pipelines are increasing. As per the report, the evidence pointing to such a connection was identified via metadata from emails used to rent a sailboat suspected to have been used to carry out the operation.

A report published by The Washington Post on April 4 revealed that the yacht, which was used in the operation, the "Andromeda" sailboat, wasn't the only vessel involved in the bombing of the Nord Stream pipelines.

The paper alleges that Andromeda was only a decoy that effectively acted as a diversion for the perpetrator.

The United States and Europe remain adamant about being unaware of the real perpetrators of the Nord Stream sabotage.

In March, investigative journalist Seymour Hersh claimed that President Joe Biden was responsible for ordering the Nord Stream pipeline explosion in September last year by using C-4 charges planted by US Navy divers.

He revealed that it was Norway that pointed out to the US the location of where the underwater pipeline was closest to the surface to facilitate the US operation.

No F-16 before agreement

Kiev expected a "powerful" number of F-16 fighter jets to arrive in the country in military assistance from a number of collective West countries, however, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated, on Tuesday, that Ukraine did not have the infrastructure to employ such an aircraft

"Regarding F-16s and infrastructure," said Zelensky, "There is no infrastructure, it will be built and prepared."

Nevertheless, Zelensky explained "There is no point in preparing it until there is an agreement that we will have the appropriate aircraft," adding that "our last very important meeting today was in Moldova, where I had one meeting behind closed doors with a number of countries that have confirmed that they will give us F-16s ... I have already received from some European partners an understanding about the number. It is powerful."

Selection of pilots for F16 training completed: Ukraine MoD

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said, on May 28, that pilots for training on F-16 fighters have been selected.

He noted that the training is due to start once everything is "technologically" prepared.

"When all the conditions are technologically ready, we will start training. The main thing is that our pilots are ready, the air force command has already selected candidates — an appropriate number of pilots and also engineers, technicians, mechanics because such equipment needs not only piloting skills but also maintenance," Reznikov told an all-Ukrainian telethon.

On May 26, Reznikov said Ukraine requires 48 F-16 fighters in order to take back the annexed territories. When asked to comment about the number of warplanes and the terms of their delivery to Ukraine, the official refused to comment.

Russia has called the delivery of the fighter jets another stage of escalation and warned that the warplanes will become a legitimate target for Russian forces.

"Certainly, this is an unacceptable escalation. I hope there are sensible people in the West who understand that," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

Eye-witness Crimea

What we found in this historic peninsula on the Black Sea was a beautiful, almost idyllic place, with a bustling economy and a general sense of prosperity and hopefulness. We also found a people who seem quite content to remain a part of Russia just as Crimea has been, except for a brief interval, since 1783

In May of this year, we took the long, 27-hour train ride from Moscow to Crimea to see how life is there and what the sentiments of the people are as the US and Ukraine sharpen their threats to “recapture” this peninsula from Russia. And, while we were there, these threats were backed by a series of terrorist drone attacks in Crimea which, while doing little serious damage, signaled an escalation in the US/Ukrainian assault on Crimea.

Despite such threats and attacks, what we found in this historic peninsula on the Black Sea was a beautiful, almost idyllic place, with a bustling economy and a general sense of prosperity and hopefulness. We also found a people who seem quite content to remain a part of Russia just as Crimea has been, except for a brief interval, since 1783.

During our trip, we visited the three major cities of Simferopol, Sevastopol and Yalta.

The Capital Simferopol

Simferopol is an inland city with about half a million residents. There are universities, as well as Crimea’s parliament and industry. When we visited it, most people were enjoying the holidays. We saw multiple groups of teenagers singing patriotic songs on the street and in front of memorials. It is difficult to imagine something comparable happening in the US or Canada. The difference may be partly the result of education, but it also shows the different consciousness and experience. Approximately 1 in every seven citizens died in WW2, so every family in the Soviet Union lost family members. The Nazi invasion and occupation were horrible, real, and impacted everyone.

In Simferopol, we met two women, Larisa and Irina, who described in detail what happened in early 2014. Confrontations started when a small group of ultra-nationalists tried to demolish the statue of Lenin in the capital center. Seeing this as an attack on their Soviet and Russian heritage, a much larger group gathered and stopped them.

Then, three police who were residents of Crimea were killed in Maidan protests. As their corpses were brought home, there was increasing fear that the violence in Kiev could reach Crimea. Volunteers formed self-defense battalions.

Hundreds of Crimeans went to Kiev on chartered buses to peacefully protest against the Maidan chaos and violence. The violence climaxed with the killing of police and protesters by snipers located in opposition-controlled buildings on February 20. The Crimeans realized that peaceful protests were hopeless and departed back to Crimea on the chartered buses. At the town of Korsun, the convoy of eight buses was stopped by a gang from the Neo-Nazi “Right Sector”. Dozens of people were beaten and seven Crimeans were killed.

On February 22, the elected government of Ukraine was overthrown. On its first day in power, the coup government enacted legislation to remove Russian as a state language. These events provoked shock, fear, and an urgent desire to reunify with Russia. According to Larisa and Irina, there was a huge popular demand to hold a referendum to secede from Ukraine
The Crimean parliament agreed and first proposed to hold the referendum in May. The popular demand was to have it much sooner. Larisa says that on February 27 the Russian flag was flying over the parliament. She does not know how, but says, “It was like a miracle.” People sensed then that Russia might accept Crimea. Suddenly there were Russian flags all over the city.

There was still the fear of violence. Soldiers in green uniforms without insignia, known as the “polite men” appeared at key locations such as the airport and parliament. It is generally understood that these were Russian special forces. They were heartily welcomed by nearly all and events proceeded without violence. Larisa laughed at Western journalists who used the photograph of a WW2 tank in a park, to insinuate that Russian tanks were in the capital.

There was no Russian involvement in the referendum; it was organized and carried out by the traditional election council on March 16. The results were decisive: with 83% voting, 97% voted to rejoin Russia
Two days later, the Crimean parliament appealed to the Russian Federation, and two days after that the agreement was signed in Moscow. Larisa and Irina say, “Everyone was happy”; they call it “Crimea Spring”.

Nuclear Submarines Museum

We visited many amazing places in Crimea. In the port town of Balaklava, we visited a museum which reminded us of the increasing danger of nuclear war. The first-class museum is located in the site where Soviet submarines were repaired, refitted and nuclear missiles installed. The site is a tunnel at sea level under a mountain. The tunnel goes from the open Black Sea to the protected Balaklava harbor. Under the mountain, the submarines could survive any attack and respond if necessary.

When we visited, many schoolchildren were also there, learning about the dangers of nuclear war, how and why Russia felt the need to develop their own nuclear capacity. The educational graphics start with the fact that the US dropped nuclear bombs on Japan, and explicit why Russia must be prepared to defend itself. Today this site is an educational museum. We don’t often think about nuclear weapons and the likelihood they could be used if war was to break out between Russia and the US. The museum shows they take this very seriously. Russia’s active nuclear armed submarines are located in Vladivostok and elsewhere.

The Valley of Death

Driving north from Balaklava, we paused at a memorial overlooking a valley that was the scene of an important battle in the Crimean War of 1854. It was immortalized in Alfred Tennyson’s poem: “The Charge of the Light Brigade”, where British cavalry charged embedded Russian forces and suffered many losses. The poem says “Into the valley of death rode the six hundred.” A famous photograph taken by one of the first wartime photographers shows a barren hillside strewn with cannon balls which mowed down the British attackers

The great Russian author Leo Tolstoy was a volunteer fighter in the Crimean War, and he himself documented his experiences in battle. As one Crimean told us in making the point that Crimea has been part of Russia for a very long time, “The Crimean War was a Russian war; it wasn’t a Ukrainian war.”

Today, those valleys have grazing sheep and vineyards with premier wineries comparable to those in Napa Valley, California. Visitors do wine tasting just like in California. The past war and bloodshed seem far away.

Sevastopol - A Special City

Further north is Sevastopol, a thriving city and the base of the Russian Black Sea naval fleet. Sevastopol is known as "the most Soviet City in Russia and the most Russian City in Ukraine," and even the City Hall continues to bear the hammer and sickle emblem on its gates.

When Ukraine seceded from the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia negotiated a long-term lease for the naval port. The Russian military has been in this port for 240 years. Along with Russian navy ships, there are locals fishing from the docks. There is a laid-back, casual air to the port, although the war hit close to home when Russia’s naval ship “Moskva” was sunk early in the conflict.

Tanya [our guide] introduced us to former Soviet and Ukrainian Navy captain Sergey. He described how, when the decision was made to secede from Ukraine in the spring of 2014, many enlisted sailors and officers chose to be in the Russian rather than Ukrainian navy. Throughout our visit, it was emphasized that Crimea has been Russian since 1783, and the large majority of the population have Russian as their native language and consider themselves Russian.

People in Russia are very conscious of war and fascism. They call WW2 the Great Patriotic War. The Soviet Union caused by far the most losses of Axis soldiers. The US, Canada, and other allies supported the war with troops and supplies but it was the Soviet Union that bore the brunt of the war and was the primary cause of victory over Nazi Germany.

Crimea was a major target of the Nazi Axis and was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of WW2. Despite stiff resistance, the peninsula was temporarily defeated. After 250 days of siege, Sevastopol was captured by the Germans in June 1942. Crimea was retaken by the Soviet Red Army in 1944.

This history may explain why Crimeans are adamantly opposed to ultra-nationalist hate-filled rhetoric, and why they decisively chose to re-unify with Russia following the overthrow of the elected Ukraine government in February 2014.

In Sevastopol, we visited the Partisan Museum, which is a house where anti-fascist Crimeans organized resistance to the Nazi occupation. The house had a hidden basement where fliers were printed and partisans organized the sabotage campaigns.

A few miles south of Sevastopol is the hilltop where the Nazi German command was based. It has been converted into a memorial, and during our visit on Saturday prior to May 9, Victory Day, there were educational exhibitions and military displays along with miniature tanks driven by kids in a 50-foot track.

Yalta

In a palace at Yalta, the leaders of the US, UK and Soviet Union negotiated the spheres of influence in Europe after the defeat of the Axis powers. The three countries were allies in WW2, but in just a few years, the Cold War emerged.

Yalta is a thriving tourist city. The palace where Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin met is open for visitors. During our visit, the hotels in Yalta were near capacity, and the promenade and city streets were full of locals and visitors. Russians who used to travel to West Europe are now traveling about their own huge country and Crimea is especially popular.
Reflections on Crimea

Crimea is incredibly beautiful and historic. Today, despite occasional sabotage actions, the situation in Crimea is calm and inviting.

Following Crimea’s secession, Ukraine tried to punish Crimeans by cutting off the electricity supply to the peninsula. They were without power for five months. Next, Ukraine blocked the fresh water supply.

Despite these hostile actions, Crimeans display no hostility to regular Ukrainians. They say, “They are our brothers and sisters.” Ukrainian is a state language in Crimea and Ukrainians are respected. There are statues honoring Ukrainian writers and artists. Many Ukrainian civilians have come to Crimea to escape the war.

Sergey says that Crimeans are sad about the conflict in Ukraine but will continue, slowly and patiently, to victory.

Irina says, “Zelensky will sooner take back the Moon than take back Crimea.”

Russia to Invest 24 Billion

On Tuesday, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced that his country plans to invest US$24.5 billion in the development of its Northern Sea Route (NSR) over the next 13 years, and a draft law prepared by the government has already passed the first reading in the State Duma

Speaking at a strategic session on the "Development of the Northern Sea Route," Mishustin emphasized the crucial role of the NSR in enhancing transportation connectivity for the remote territories of the country.

The strategic session evaluated the progress in implementing the NSR development plan approved in August 2022, which includes the construction of more than 50 icebreakers and ice-class ships, the establishment of ports, terminals, emergency rescue centers, and the deployment of an orbital satellite constellation.

To fulfill this comprehensive plan, it is estimated that about 2 trillion rubles will need to be invested over the next 13 years, of which about one-third, or US$7.37 billion, will be allocated from the federal budget.

This ambitious undertaking signifies the creation of a new Arctic economy, and cited projects that have already been realized, such as the launch of an ice radar satellite from the Vostochny cosmodrome last week, as part of the modern management system.

He also mentioned notable achievements, such as the presence of three nuclear-powered icebreakers, including the world's most powerful icebreaker, the Arktika.

Furthermore, the Utrenny marine terminal in the Gulf of Ob is scheduled to host a floating LNG production plant in August.

Mishustin stressed the importance of creating a comprehensive infrastructure complex, which encompasses new ports, technical and emergency stations, weather and ice monitoring systems, and a traffic management system spanning the entire Northern Sea Route.

As part of this initiative, five meteorological satellites will be launched ahead of schedule this year to provide continuous surveillance and assistance across all Arctic routes.

Putin, MBS discuss energy market

The two sides discussed measures to deepen trade relations, and implement joint projects “in the field of investment, transport logistics, energy.”

The stability of the energy market and cooperation within the OPEC+ alliance were topics of conversation during a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday, according to the Kremlin.

The Kremlin said in a statement that "Russian President Vladimir Putin had a phone conversation with Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud,” adding that the sides discussed the issue of maintaining the “stability of the global energy market”.

It explained that both sides highly appreciated the level of cooperation within the framework of OPEC+, which invites timely and effective steps to maintain a balance between supply and demand for oil.

"The importance of the agreements reached in this regard during the recent ministerial meeting in Riyadh was noted."

The sides also talked about measures to deepen trade relations, and implement joint projects “in the field of investment, transport logistics, energy.”

On another note, Saudi Arabia became Europe's largest supplier of crude oil as the country sells its own supplies to the EU while bolstering its reserves by importing sanctioned Russian oil, a Bloomberg report published on May 28.

The Gulf country reportedly purchased around 174,000 barrels per day of diesel and gasoline in the month of April and imports increased in May, according to Bloomberg.

Saudi imports of Russian petroleum are at their highest levels since 2017 according to the data available from Vortexa Ltd. and Kpler, two shipping analytics firms.

Kpler has also said that Riyadh has surpassed the US in diesel and gasoline exports to become the global leader in the market.

35% of the Kingdom's fuel exports from the Jubail and Yanbu ports went to the EU and the UK in April as Saudi Arabia has been able to curb sanctions on the Russian energy sector by supplying Western countries with its own product while recycling Russian oil into domestic use or other markets.

Ukraine blows up Togliatti-Odessa pipeline

According to the Russian Defense Ministry on Wednesday, Ukraine has blown up the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline in Kharkov, with some casualties reported

"On June 5, at about 21:00 Moscow time [18:00 GMT], a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group blew up the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline near the settlement Masyutovka in Kharkov Region," the ministry announced, adding that the blast was "a designated terrorist attack," and that those injured have received proper medical care.

The Russian defense ministry detailed that "ammonia residues are being drained from the Ukrainian territory through the damaged sections of the pipeline. There are no casualties among Russian soldiers."

Footage of deadly clouds of ammonia vapor spilling into the nearby environment circulated online, purportedly documenting the repercussions of the sabotaged assault.

Although ammonia is not classified as a standard chemical warfare agent, exposure to extremely high amounts of the chemical can induce lung damage and death. Ammonia is also extremely harmful to fish, animals, and plant life.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that repairing the pipeline could last a few months in the case that Russia could access the site.

During a briefing, the spokeswoman noted that one of the stations is now out of order and that preliminary estimates show the repair will take " about one to three months. This, of course, will require access to the site of the damage."

Zakharova added that the Ukrainian President announced he would fix the problem of the pipeline "but this does not mean readiness on his part to resume the transportation of ammonia. We will make an effort to clarify the circumstances of the incident. But even now we can already state that only one party was never interested in reanimating the pipeline - the Kiev regime."

The Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline goes from the Russian province of Samara to Kharkov, then south and west to the Black Sea coastal city of Odessa, where the resource is exported. Ammonia is a significant basic element utilized in natural fertilizer enrichment.

The pipeline, built in 1979 soviet-era could transport up to 2.5 million tonnes of ammonia per year until recently.

Russia has attempted to revive the pipeline as part of the Grain Deal and issued a warning last month that if its demands to link the Russian Agricultural Bank to SWIFT and reopen the pipeline were not met, the Grain Deal will be canceled on July 17

The attack on the pipeline is the second major act of environmental terrorism that Ukraine has been accused of by Moscow this week.

On Tuesday, the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine was blown by shelling unleashing a flood of water across the war zone.

Reports warned that the critically rising water levels could threaten 80 local settlements and that the damage to the dam will also lead to problems with water supplies to Crimea.

Kiev forces have repeatedly targeted the plant and its dam since 2022 and Russia has repeatedly warned of its destruction or damage.

Ukraine attacked the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in September 2022, something the CIA had knowledge of according to a report by The Washington Post Yesterday.

Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh claimed in March that President Joe Biden was responsible for ordering the Nord Stream pipeline explosion in September last year by using C-4 charges planted by US Navy divers.

He revealed that it was Norway that pointed out to the US the location of where the underwater pipeline was closest to the surface to facilitate the US operation.

Erdogan, Putin discuss Kakhovka

According to the Turkish President's office, the President and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke over the phone regarding the need to investigate the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), as well as the situation in Ukraine

The statement detailed that the two presidents spoke of developments in the Russian-Ukraine war. Additionally, Erdogan said it was crucial to investigate the matter in a way that "eliminates any doubt. "

He expressed that Russian and Ukrainian experts should form a commission along with the United Nations and the international community, emphasizing that Turkey is ready to play a role.

The President's office also detailed how Erdogan also discussed the matter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine was blown on Tuesday by shelling unleashing a flood of water across the war zone.

Reports warned that the critically rising water levels could threaten 80 local settlements and that the damage to the dam will also lead to problems with water supplies to Crimea.

In a statement, the Turkish Presidency detailed that "Erdogan expressed the idea of creating an international commission with the participation of experts from the belligerents, the UN and Turkey," as quoted by TRT Haber TV broadcaster.

The Russian President disclosed to Erdogan that Ukraine utilizes terrorist methods and sabotage in Russia, according to the Kremlin.

Putin added that Ukraine is engaging in dangerous escalation backed by the West. He referred to the destruction of Kakhovka HPP as a "barbaric act" that led to a giant ecological disaster.

Both presidents emphasized their commitment to the continued implementation of collaborative initiatives in energy, trade, and tourism, and they pledged to keep in touch.

Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said on Wednesday that the United States, the United Kingdom, and their NATO allies authorized the attack on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant (HPP) and should be held responsible.

In a meeting with a Belarusian counterpart in Minsk, Patrushev stated that the US "cannot say who is responsible for blowing up the hydroelectric power plant. At the same time, it is known for certain that the activities of the Ukrainian armed forces are coordinated by the United States, the UK, and their NATO partners. Accordingly, they gave their consent to the explosion and should be held responsible for this cynical act."

The attack on the dam was pre-planned and over the proceeding months Kiev purposely increased the water flow to the dam in order for the bombing to have the greatest impact on communities in the surrounding areas

Germany's tanks not holding up well

The German equipment used in Ukraine is not holding up too well, with reports on Thursday saying the Leopard tanks and the IRIS-T surface-to-air missile systems handed to Ukraine were hit by Russian fire, causing them to be badly damaged and even destroyed in the process

The Russian armed forces, using loitering munitions, eliminated a radar station of an IRIS-T air defense system.

In the wake of the revelation, the Russian Defense Ministry published footage depicting the target being essentially wiped out.

The first IRIS-Ts were handed to Ukraine back in October 2022. German newspaper Der Speigel reported at the time that Berlin planned to deliver four systems to Kiev. The handover was made near the Polish-Ukrainain border.

The delivery was made at a time when reports were saying for months the German military was running out of weapons that can be sent to Ukraine, with Kiev still projected to be dependent on defense assistance from Berlin.
Leopard 2s seen for the first time

According to Russian sources, drone footage taken yesterday during the Ukrainian offensive near the city of Orikhiv in the Zaporozhye region appears to show at least two German-made Leopard 2 tanks as well as several armored personnel carriers, including American M113s, that are under fire from Russian artillery.

Numerous pieces of equipment appear to have been destroyed.

It is still not possible to verify that the targets burning in the images are Leopard 2 tanks or that they have been damaged or destroyed, with the equipment struck by Russian artillery seeming to be Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) or Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs).

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius revealed in April that Germany and its allies have given dozens of Leopard tanks to Ukraine.

"Together with the Poles and other allies, we are supplying two battalions of Leopard 2, a little over 60 battle tanks. Up to four more battalions of Leopard 1 tanks will be added until next year. This is over 100 tanks. Our American and British allies will also hand over tanks," Pistorius said.

NATO countries do not have spare battle tanks awaiting shipment and that it is possible to cover Ukraine's needs in the mid-term, he revealed.

Additionally, Germany pledged in May to send Kiev some $3 billion worth of military aid, with German media saying it was Berlin's greatest military support package to Kiev.

The publication revealed that Berlin intends to supply Ukraine with 20 Marder infantry combat vehicles, 30 Leopard 1 tanks, up to 200 reconnaissance drones, Gepard anti-aircraft vehicles, extra IRIS-T anti-aircraft missiles, artillery rounds, and transporters.

The Russian Defense Ministry also reported that using high-precision guided missiles, Moscow's forces were able to engage uncovered self-propelled artillery positions and supporting armored vehicles, publishing footage showing the damage inflicted upon the Ukrainian side.

Heavy fighting in Zaparozhye

The Ukrainian military sustained huge casualties in its attempted night attacks in the Zaporozhye area towards Tokmak, Vladimir Rogov, chairman of the We Are Together with Russia movement, said Thursday.

"I can’t recall that such massive night attacks took place before. I believe that under their plans they thought that they could shield themselves from our aviation at night and that our aircraft would operate less efficiently. I have no other explanation," Rogov told a live podcast on Komsomolskaya Pravda radio.

"They have sustained huge casualties on minefields, from air and artillery strikes and they simply show disregard for losses and throw troops into action wave after wave," he added.

Moreover, the Ukrainian offensive was preceded by artillery strikes.

"Late in the evening, they began shelling our positions in the Tokmak area, south and southeast of the town of Orekhov, and then launched an attack but this attack was rebuffed and at about 3:00 a.m. Moscow time, they again retreated. Literally in an hour, by 4:00 a.m. Moscow time, they launched a new and far more massive attack," he explained.

The aforementioned damage sustained by Kiev's forces was dealt with in the aftermath of the offensive, which led Russia to go on an onslaught on its Western front.

Poland tied to Nord Stream attack

Germany is investigating Poland's involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline carried out in September 2022, which destroyed one of the largest infrastructures in the world and potentially Europe's largest source of energy

An exclusive report by The Wall Street Journal on Saturday revealed that Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office is looking into evidence that might indicate that Poland was the operation's base to organize the attack on the pipelines.

Germany's Criminal Police Office found that a Warsaw-based firm Feeria Lwowa - which has been dormant for years and is owned by a Ukrainian citizen - rented a luxury yacht called Andromeda from a German company, located near the pipelines, that was used in the terrorist operation.

Earlier this week, a report by The Washington Post said the CIA knew through a European spy agency three months before the sabotage attack that members of a Ukrainian special operations team intended on blowing up the NordStream pipeline.

The yacht according to the investigators was loaded with explosives and made a deviation from its original route into Polish waters come from the Danish island of Christianso.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office of Germany confirmed last March that searches had been carried out on a ship that was carrying explosives to blow up the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

According to the WSJ report, the investigators who searched the boat in January found traces of HMX - also referred to as octogen, a colorless substance well-suited for demolishing underwater infrastructure.

The yacht crew planted the explosives before heading toward Poland, the report added, noting that navigation hardware, satellite, and mobile phones, as well as Gmail accounts used by the perpetrators, were discovered on the ship. But the most notable finding was DNA samples that investigators are trying to match with suspected personnel.

Attempting to distance Warsaw from the operation, a senior Polish national security official said, “I can assure you that no Polish institution is involved in this story, and this is not a state case," but “I cannot exclude that some Polish company or whatever is involved in this case.”

Immediately after the explosion, former Polish minister and member of the European Parliament Radoslaw Sikorski thanked on his Twitter account the United States, referring to Washington's possible role in cutting off the energy infrastructure.

He also tweeted in Polish that if Russia wants to continue supplying gas to Europe, it must "talk to the countries controlling the Brotherhood and Yamal gas pipelines, Ukraine and Poland."

However, Sikorski later deleted both tweets

Poland, which claims that it has been conducting its own investigation, has been trying for months to figure out what Berlin is investigating, the report revealed.

In March, investigative journalist Seymour Hersh said President Joe Biden was responsible for ordering the Nord Stream pipeline explosion in September last year by using C-4 charges planted by US Navy divers.

He revealed that it was Norway that pointed out to the US the location of where the underwater pipeline was closest to the surface to facilitate the US operation.

Germany's Leopards tanks

The IRIS-T defense systems and the Leopard tanks given to Ukraine are facing trouble in the wake of Russian attacks on the country's Western front after a Ukrainian offensive

Counter offensive negative implications

When asked about the possibility of NATO joining the war, Hersh says that they were "probably already in it."

According to Pulitzer Prize-winning US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh on Sunday, Ukraine's counteroffensive will not bring any good to Kiev, the United States, or NATO.

In an interview he gave to George Galloway, Hersh explained how "this [counteroffensive] isn't going to be good for Ukraine, it's not going to be good for NATO, it's certainly not going to be good for the Biden administration."

When asked about the possibility of NATO joining the war, Hersh stated that they were "probably already in it."

The journalist explained that the Ukrainian army is comprised of "so many disparate groups," comparable to 15 different dance teams that suddenly are forced to organize a routine together after practicing alone for a very long.

Hersh called it "impossible" and added that this is what was currently happening.

Ukraine has been hyping its counteroffensive attack, since last year. Although the attack was intended for spring it was moved to the summer after Ukraine blamed the delay on a lack of weapons.

The West has been urged to deliver progressively heavier weapons, including tanks, drones, and fighter planes.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters on Friday that the Ukrainian "counteroffensive" in the special military operation zone has begun and that Kiev is resorting to its strategic reserves.

"Firstly, it can be stated with absolute certainty that the counteroffensive has begun and this is proved by the use of strategic reserves," Putin said.

Majority of world supports Russia

US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh explains that the US is losing credibility as Russia is gaining global support with that the majority of the world's population stands with Russia in the war

US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh underscored, on Sunday, that the majority of the world's population supported Russia in the war in Ukraine while the credibility of the US is being put into question.

In an interview with George Galloway on Mother of All Talk Shows (MOATS), Hersh stated that "the percentage of the [countries], particularly of the African and Central Asian and South Asian countries, that have changed from being pro-America to being pro-Russia is really quite dramatic. Much more than half of the world's population supports Russia in the war and not the United States. This was never the way it was."

Significantly, Hersh further explained that while sanctions have taken their toll on Russia, and "things are not as good as they used to be" in Moscow, it remained that "the idea that they are desperate is just wrong."

Emphasizing the US setbacks, Hersh referenced the Saudi Arabia-Iran rapprochement through Chinese mediation, which showed that Washington "lost so much credibility around the world."

Hersh linked the rapprochement through China to the war in Ukraine, explaining that "It's happened because, I think, because of Ukraine and dislike of the war."

Moreover, he pointed out that "Saudi Arabia, by the way, they're selling 25% of [their] oil to China, as I have mentioned, but the Saudis immediately cut a deal," further linking this to the pressure exerted by the Ansar Allah in Yemen, and hopes that Iran may hold influence over them.

Ukraine counteroffensive will bring no good to Kiev, US or NATO

According to the Pulitzer Prize-winning US investigative journalist, Ukraine's counteroffensive will not bring any good to Kiev, the United States, or NATO.

Hersh explained how "this [counteroffensive] isn't going to be good for Ukraine, it's not going to be good for NATO, it's certainly not going to be good for the Biden administration."

When asked about the possibility of NATO joining the war, Hersh stated that they were "probably already in it."

The journalist further explained that the Ukrainian army is comprised of "so many disparate groups," comparable to 15 different dance teams that suddenly are forced to organize a routine together after practicing alone for a very long.

Despite the ongoing efforts to attempt to organize, Hersh said it is "impossible" for them to be able to successfully do so.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters on Friday that the Ukrainian "counteroffensive" in the special military operation zone has begun and that Kiev is now down to using its strategic reserves.

"Firstly, it can be stated with absolute certainty that the counteroffensive has begun and this is proved by the use of strategic reserves," Putin said.

Kim Jong to 'hold hands with Putin

In a message to President Vladimir Putin commemorating Russia's National Day, Kim displays "full support and solidarity" to Russia in light of the war in Ukraine

DPRK state media KCNA reported on Monday that leader Kim Jong Un promised to "hold hands" with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to boost strategic cooperation on their common goal of building a powerful nation.

In a message to Putin commemorating Russia's National Day, Kim displayed "full support and solidarity" to Russia in light of the war in Ukraine.

"Justice is sure to win and the Russian people will continue to add glory to the history of victory," Kim said in the statement published by KCNA.

Kim urged "closer strategic cooperation" with Russia, and assured "holding hands firmly with the Russian president, in conformity with the common desire of the peoples of the two countries to fulfill the grand goal of building a powerful country" as per the statement.

The DPRK has supported Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022 and has sought to build closer ties by blaming the "hegemonic policy" and "high-handedness" of the United States and the West.

Back in October, Kim congratulated Putin on his 70th birthday, praising his achievements in "building powerful Russia" and expressing hope for the development of bilateral relations.

"Today, Russia is reliably defending the dignity of the state and its fundamental interests from the challenges and threats by the US and its vassal forces. Such reality is unthinkable without your distinguished leadership and strong will," Kim told the Russian President.

On North Korea's liberation day last year, Putin stated in a letter to Kim that closer ties would be in the interest of both countries and would further help strengthen the security and stability of the Korean peninsula and the Northeastern Asian region, KCNA reported.
