Most Italians oppose NATO in Ukraine

The majority of Italians are against Ukraine being supplied with modern Western-made weapons, a Euromedia poll commissioned by Italian newspaper La Stampa found on Saturday

52% of the respondents said they were against arms being supplied to Ukraine, an increase from the findings of a similar poll conducted in mid-December, the survey showed.

As of January 24, 68.5% of respondents were also against a possible NATO intervention in the war.

One in three Italian citizens, 33.9%, believe it to be necessary for Ukraine to be supported with German-made Leopard tanks, while 58% disapprove of this idea.

Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of Italians, 78.2%, believe that the Ukraine war is far away from them, the newspaper said, citing another survey commissioned by the Rai1 broadcaster, reflecting a general sentiment of carelessness toward the war in Italy.

A survey conducted in January for Greenpeace revealed that the majority of Italians, 55%, were against the government's plans to ramp up military spending by 2% in light of NATO's target for upping their member states' spending by 2028.

Earlier in the month, the Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that Italy would not be taking a decision on the supply of new arms to Ukraine until next month in light of ongoing domestic political tensions, cost considerations, and military shortages.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in late December that Italy was mulling sending air defenses to Kiev after a phone call between the two officials that saw Meloni underlining her government's "full support" for Ukraine.

Shortly thereafter, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto questioned whether Italy would be able to provide the aforementioned air defense systems to Ukraine.

Italy, under former Prime Minister Mario Draghi, managed to send Kiev five aid packages, which included weapons. Meanwhile, Meloni's government has been working for weeks to make a sixth delivery happen.

Meloni's Brothers of Italy party and its right-wing allies won the general elections in Italy in October, her victory marked the first of a neo-fascist since WW1 in Italy.

During her first parliamentary address, one month after a historic election victory for the far-right, Meloni assured Italy's support for the EU and NATO, as she added, "Italy is fully part of Europe and the Western world" and that it would "continue to be a reliable partner of NATO in supporting Ukraine."

Russia-Pakistan collaboration

During a meeting of the Pakistan-Russia Intergovernmental Commission held in Islamabad last week, the two countries agreed to begin crude oil supply to Pakistan by March this year amid a deepening energy and reserve crisis that is strangling Pakistan's economy

The energy proposal didn't say what currency the business would be done in, but it did say that transactions between Moscow and Islamabad must be done in the "currency of friendly countries" instead of the US dollar.

Many people believe that the Russian ruble or the Chinese yuan will be the medium of trade between Russia and Pakistan. Russia is the second country with which Islamabad would transact in a currency other than the US dollar. Pakistan earlier had a currency swap agreement with China.

Russian and Pakistani officials also discussed reviving the proposed Stream Gas Pipeline Project, which was halted due to US and EU restrictions on Russian companies. The project was supposed to come out last year, but it was delayed and then put on hold for an undetermined amount of time.

Russian Energy Minister Nikolay Shulginov, who headed the Russian delegation and was in Islamabad last week for talks with Pakistani officials, delivered a "special message" of President Vladimir Putin to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. In his message, Putin stated that Russia regards Pakistan as an "essential" partner in South Asia and the Islamic world and reaffirmed Moscow's strong interest in developing relations with Islamabad.

Discount rates

Speaking to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, Shulginov said that the rate, volumes, logistics, and insurance of crude oil and petroleum products will be determined after the signing of an agreement with Pakistan. "We conceptually agreed to construct and execute an agreement that will determine and resolve all other concerns," he explained.

Last year, Pakistani State Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik flew to Moscow to deliberate on the energy deal. Malik told the media on his return that Russia would provide Pakistan with crude oil at discounted rates. He said that the discount could be greater than that given to other nations.

Sustained diplomatic efforts by Pakistan to restore economic ties with Russia to meet its energy requirements led to the current negotiations with Russia and the understanding to import oil from Russia. In February last year, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was the first foreign leader to visit Moscow, at a time when Putin had recognized Donetsk and Lugansk as autonomous entities and sent troops there.

Imran discussed with the Russian leader the possibility of Russian crude oil supplies to Pakistan. The media reports suggest that during Putin and Imran's one-on-one meeting in Moscow, the two leaders also discussed the planned joint venture between Russian and Pakistani companies to build a multibillion-dollar gas pipeline through Pakistan. Imran Khan asserted that they had reached an agreement with Russian officials for the supply of crude oil at a discounted rate when he returned from Moscow, but Moscow later refuted this claim.

Khan was kicked out of office in April of last year after a vote of no confidence in the legislature. He blamed his removal on his trip to Moscow and said that the US conspired to overthrow his government.

Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline Project

In 2015, Russia and Pakistan reached an agreement in principle to build a pipeline that would move imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Karachi on the Arabian Sea coast to power plants in the northeastern region of Punjab.

The pipeline's designed annual capacity was estimated at 12.4 billion cubic meters (bcm), with the potential for further expansion to 16 bcm. The cost estimates range from $1.5 billion to $3.5 billion, with Moscow funding 26% and Islamabad proposing to fund the remaining 74%. The project was scheduled to begin in 2020, but Russia was forced to replace the first participant when the Russian businesses were sanctioned by the US for reasons unrelated to the Pakistan Stream project.

Currently, the pipeline, a rare example of Russian cooperation, involves the Eurasian Pipeline Consortium, steel pipe maker TMK, which manufactures steel pipelines for the energy sector, and a Russian Energy Ministry operational services center. Russian shareholders anticipate recouping their investments through gas shipping fees.

Imran Khan, during his visit to Moscow, told the Russian media that trade restrictions on Russian firms have hampered economic activity in the region. "It was nearly impossible to discover a Russian business firm that had not been sanctioned," Imran said during a live broadcast on Russian television.

Pakistan ignores sanctions

The officials in Islamabad do not perceive a US rebuke over the energy contract with Russia, on whom Washington and the European Union placed the strictest sanctions following the Ukrainian war. They appear to have disregarded the possibility of a western censure. Islamabad has said that it will continue to import oil from Russia despite US trade sanctions in the wake of the Eurasian war.

In a late January interview with the Russian network RT, Pakistan's Petroleum and Energy Minister Musadik Malik downplayed the US's probable retaliation, stating, "I do not see any complications; we are not violating or doing anything the world has never seen before." He asserted that Europe already imports energy from Russia, but Pakistan buys only a small fraction of what Europe is already getting from Russia.

Ned Price, a spokesman for the US State Department, told reporters at a press briefing on Tuesday (January 24) afternoon that Pakistan might also benefit from the deals that the US has made with other countries in exchange for buying their oil.

"As a result, we have urged countries, including those that have not formally signed on to the price cap, to take advantage of that so that they can get oil at a severe discount from what they would otherwise acquire from, in this case, Russia," Price added.

The G7 and EU countries put a price cap of $60 per barrel on Russian oil on December 3, 2022, to prevent Moscow from using the proceeds to fund its war against Ukraine.

Energy insecurity

Due to the increase in international oil prices, the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee, and the internal political and economic turmoil, Pakistan is sliding toward energy insecurity. According to a 2019 white paper produced by the Asian Development Bank, the country supposedly suffers from energy insecurity. In addition to Pakistan, several other countries, including developed nations, confront energy instability. Since the energy industry is, by definition, cyclical, there are numerous instances of market growth being followed by a significant decline and contraction. However, the current crises are distinct in other aspects.

Approximately one-third of Pakistan's energy requirements are met by imported liquefied natural gas (LNG), coal, and oil. Pakistan's energy policy, which is based heavily on imports, is not sustainable given the depletion of foreign exchange reserves and the escalating energy costs in the international market. This has made the country vulnerable to long-term energy insecurity, and rising prices have made exports less competitive, making it harder for the country to pay for energy imports.

West blackmailing Serbia

Russia’s Ambassador to Belgrade Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko reiterated that the West is blackmailing Serbia to join the EU in imposing sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine, at a time when Serbia has refused to join the draconian sanctions on Moscow

The official highlighted that the EU is attempting to pull Serbia to its side in the matter of interaction with Russia, or punishing Belgrade for refusing to do so.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he argued that "Brussels has reached a decision to restrict the supply of Russian oil, and Belgrade, despite its status as an EU candidate, was not exempt from it," stressing that the EU aims by applying such measures to intimidate and punish those who refuse to join the "pack".

"We have often spoken in detail about the obvious benefits for Belgrade from retaining full-scale collaboration with Russia. These are reasonable prices for energy resources supplied continuously from Russia, revenues from their transit to Hungary, large-scale investments in our joint company NIS, modernization of hydropower through Power Machines and railway infrastructure by Russian Railways, as well as new projects in the field of high technologies and innovations," the Ambassador said.

On his account, Serbia's First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ivica Dacic warned during a visit to Turkey that placing sanctions on Russia would be a mistake that would harm the country.

It is worth noting that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has constantly reiterated that Belgrade will not impose sanctions on Russia until its very existence is threatened.

Many countries are being threatened with sanctions being put on them if they refuse to support sanctions on Russia

I think that most people are now aware that the US and NATO have broken their agreement that NATO would not move any closer to Russian borders

Also, the fact that Kiev broke the MINSK agreement is now being widely discussed thanks to Angela Merkel's admission that she never intended the agreements to work: The MINSK agreements that were intended to stop Kiev's attacks against DONBASS and give Donbass a certain amount of autonomy

NOTE:
That while the US is pushing for everyone to place sanctions against Russia and people in other countries are suffering from the cold, the US themselves are still using Russian Uranium to power it's nuclear power plants

Kiev shelled Donbass hospital

Ukraine hits a hospital building in Lugansk, using US-made multiple rocket launcher system HIMARS, resulting in the killing of 14 people and wounding of 24

"On January 28, in the LPR's town of Novoaidar at about 7.30 a.m. local time [05:30 GMT], the Ukrainian armed forces deliberately hit the hospital building with multiple rocket launchers of the HIMARS system manufactured by the United States," the ministry said.

The strike killed 14 people and wounded 24 others, including the hospital's staff, the ministry added.

A week ago, Kiev was scrambling to relocate its reserve troops to a frontline near Zaporzhye to attack Russian troops after the latter disrupted a Ukrainian supply line, said Vladimir Rogov, a member of the Zaporozhye regional administration's main council.

The official revealed that the Russian military had taken full control of the Kamianske-Orikhiv highway, which served as a key channel in the transfer of Ukrainian troops, weapons, and munition.

According to Rogov, the Ukrainian armed forces were facing a shortage of artillery munitions due to disrupted logistic chains and weapons depots eliminated by the Russian troops.

This came less than a week after Rogov reported that Ukrainian forces shelled Polohy, Zaporozhye, which killed four civilians and seriously wounded five others.

Ukraine's attacks have escalated in Zaparozhye, alongside the neighboring regions of Kherson, Donetsk People's Republic, and Lugansk People's Republic, which have seen an uptick in violence from Ukraine since their accession into Russia in September.

Argentina will not send weapons

During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Argentina President Alberto Fernandez tersely stated that Latin American countries “are not thinking of sending weapons to Ukraine or anywhere else.”

“It is an issue that we have to work on together. In the northern hemisphere, missiles fly and people die, but in the southern hemisphere this has an impact with higher costs and hunger,” he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he confirmed that he wants peace to be restored as soon as possible.

On his part, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated Saturday that he would do everything possible to avoid a war between Russia and NATO member nations.

His remarks came in stark opposition to Germany's decision to deliver 4 Leopard 2 tanks alongside a new supplies package.

“We have done everything to prevent an escalation of this war that leads to a conflict between Russia and the NATO states. We are going to do everything so that this does not happen,” Scholz said.

Scholz claimed that even while the crisis was "between Russia and Ukraine," Germany and other countries could still help Kiev with "humanitarian and financial aid," as well as armaments.

The two leaders also tackled the war in Ukraine and the economic crisis, among other issues.

Argentina emphasized its potential for agricultural and energy resources, while Germany expressed interest in investing in projects.

It is worth noting that the German Chancellor started his official visit to Argentina on Saturday, the first since he assumed office in December 2021.

NATO put pressure on S. Korea

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urged South Korea on Monday to "step up" military support for Ukraine, advising it to reconsider its policy of not sending weapons to countries in conflict

Perhaps I should point out that US intervention is what caused the North / South divide in Korea

Stoltenberg is in Seoul for the first leg of his Asia trip, which will also include a stop in Japan, as part of a strained effort to lure the region's allies into sending lethal weapons in the wake of the war in Ukraine not to mention underpinning tensions with China.

He met with top South Korean officials on Sunday and urged Seoul to do more to "assist" Kiev, saying there was an "urgent need for more munitions" on Monday.

The NATO Secretary-General said that countries like Germany and Norway had "long-standing policies not to export weapons to countries in conflict", which they revised after the war in Ukraine started in February last year.

"If we believe in freedom, democracy, if we don't want autocracy and totalitarian to win then they need weapons," he said, speaking at the Chey Institute in Seoul.

If NATO believed in FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY they would not be supporting the Ukraine that has banned all legal opposition parties and imprisoned legally elected opposition MPs

Commenting on this issue, a researcher of the Society for International Politics Study in DPRK, warned in an article published by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Monday that "NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will likely exert pressure on Japan and South Korea to force these countries to provide military aid to Ukraine."

"It is a matter of time that the military hardware of South Korea and Japan flowing into NATO are seen in the Ukrainian battlefield," Kim Tong Myong added, stressing that Stoltenberg will use the "theory of threat from China" in order to pressure Japan and South Korea.
    The big picture
South Korea is a growing global arms exporter, having recently won contracts to sell hundreds of tanks to European countries, including NATO member Poland.

However, South Korean law prohibits the transfer of weapons to countries in active conflict.

It is worth noting that South Korea opened its first diplomatic mission to NATO last year.

Stoltenberg stated that it was unknown when the Ukrainian conflict would finish, claiming that Putin was preparing for "further war" and actively obtaining weapons from countries such as DPRK.

In response to the US allegations, Pyongyang has firmly denied sending weapons to Moscow, and said Sunday that Washington would face a "really undesirable result" if it persisted in spreading the "self-made rumor".

"Trying to tarnish the image of (DPRK) by fabricating a non-existent thing is a grave provocation that can never be allowed and that cannot but trigger its reaction," said Kwon Jong Gun, director general of the DPRK's Department of US Affairs. He also called it "a foolish attempt to justify its offer of weapons to Ukraine".

Biden says NO to sending jets

"No," Biden said when asked by reporters at the White House if he was in favor of sending the jets, which Ukraine's leaders have said are at the top of their latest weapons wish list

According to the newspaper, the campaign for F-16s to Ukraine is gaining momentum in the Pentagon, while Kiev is bracing for a planned offensive this spring.

A senior Pentagon official told Politico he did not think the US Department of Defense (DoD) was opposed to the idea, noting that there was no final decision on the possible supplies yet.

However, there is no appetite in the Pentagon for this proposal, US officials revealed, according to Politico.

Elsewhere, the US President also said he will be visiting Poland. "I'm going to be going to Poland. I don't know when, though," he told reporters when asked about a visit.

Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki pointed out that Poland can hand over its F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine only in coordination with other NATO partners.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last week however that he wants the West to send long-range missiles and jets.

Last Monday, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Kiev expects to receive fighter jets from the West in the near future and it would take Ukrainian pilots at least six months to learn how to operate them.

A couple of days ago, Colonel Yurii Ihnat, the spokesperson for the Air Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said Kiev intends to obtain 24 F-16 fighter jets from its international allies.

Germany reiterates stance not to send warplanes to Ukraine

Macron does not exclude France providing Ukraine with fighter jets

In this context, French President Emmanuel Macron said he would not rule out France delivering fighter jets to Ukraine but warned against the risk of escalation in the conflict.

"Nothing is excluded in principle," Macron said after talks with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte when asked about the possibility of sending jets to Kiev.

However, the French President set out a series of "criteria" before making any decision, as Ukraine steps up calls for more advanced weapons from the West just days after its allies pledged to deliver tanks.

These included that Ukraine must first make the request, that any arms would "not be escalatory," and that they would "not be likely to hit Russian soil but purely to aid the resistance effort."
Macron stressed that any arms delivery "must not weaken the capacity of the French armed forces."

He noted that the Ukrainians "are not making this request at the moment for fighter jets."

Dutch politicians have recently suggested the idea of sending F-16 jets to Ukraine, but Rutte echoed Macron's cautious comments.

"There is no taboo but it would be a big step," the Dutch Premier indicated.

"It is not at all a question of F-16s, there has been no demand (from Ukraine)," he added.

The French and Dutch leaders made their comments a day after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he would not send fighter jets to Ukraine.

Scholz only just agreed on Wednesday to send 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and to allow other European countries to send theirs, after weeks of intense debate and mounting pressure from allies.

Scholz's decision to green-light the tanks was accompanied by a US announcement that it would send 31 of its Abrams tanks.

Ukraine using banned mines

HRW says Ukrainian forces have extensively scattered landmines around the Izyum area

Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Tuesday accused Ukraine of using banned anti-personnel landmines against Russian forces, saying almost 50 civilians, including five children, had been wounded.

Distributed by rockets across a target area, the tiny PFM mines are also known as "butterfly" or "petal" mines for their distinctive shape.

"Ukrainian forces appear to have extensively scattered landmines" around the Izyum area in the northeast, HRW arms expert Steve Goose said.

Ukraine is a signatory to the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty and claimed it destroyed much of its Soviet stock by 2020. But in 2021 -- the year before the war erupted -- Kiev reported to the UN that over 3.3 million PFM mines contained in artillery rockets were yet to be destroyed.

HRW said its researchers on the ground saw physical evidence of such rockets and traces of the mines in the Izyum area, as well as speaking to witnesses who had themselves encountered mines, knew someone who was injured, or had been warned about the weapons.

According to HRW, "Healthcare workers said that they treated nearly 50 civilians, including at least five children, who were apparently injured from anti-personnel mines."

It added that "about half of the injuries involved traumatic amputations of the foot or lower leg, injuries consistent with PFM blast mines."

The rights group stressed that "Ukraine should recommit to the Mine Ban Treaty's strict prohibitions, open an investigation into the recent apparent use of PFM anti-personnel mines, hold those responsible to account, and take steps to secure and destroy its stocks of antipersonnel mines."

HRW said it presented the Ukrainian authorities with a summary of the findings in November.

Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Oleksandr Polishchuk did not provide direct answers to the allegations, saying, "Ukraine is a reliable member of the international community, and it fully commits to all international obligations in the sphere of mine usage. This includes the non-use of anti-personnel mines in the war."

UK won't supply F-35 fighters

Britain says it won't supply Ukraine with RAF Typhoon and F-35 fighters because it would take too long to train Volodymyr Zelensky's pilots to fly 'sophisticated' warplanes

Britain says it will refuse a request from Ukraine for advanced fighter jets with which it can battle Russia, saying it is not 'practical'.

No10 said today it was not planning to send RAF Typhoon or F-35 fighters to Volodymyr Zelensky's forces because it would take too long to train pilots to fly them.

The Ukrainian air force is currently equipped with Soviet-era Russian fighters, mainly the Mig-29, which first flew in 1977.

But President Zelensky is seeking newer western fighter jets that can reach speeds of more than 1,200mph - adding to nearly $30billion in military and security assistance since Russia's invasion on February 24.

But the Prime Minister's official spokesman said today it was 'not currently practical' to send RAF jets.

No10 today said it was not planning to send RAF Typhoon or F-35 fighters (above) to Volodymyr Zelensky's forces because it would take too long to train pilots to fly them

'The UK's Typhoon and F-35 fighter jets are extremely sophisticated and take months to learn how to fly. Given that, we believe it is not practical to send those jets into Ukraine,' he said

'Obviously we will continue to provide and accelerate our military support to Ukraine and listen carefully to their requests.'

Pentagon officials want to send American F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine to fight Putin, after Zelensky's army secured tanks from Germany and the US.

The contentious discussion on whether to send the jets to Ukraine has been ongoing as the Biden administration, which has so far rebuffed Kyiv's requests, must approve the transfers.

Deputy national security adviser Jonathan J Finer claimed this week that while there was no set decision the possibility was not off the table - but top brass are said to be keen.

Any such donation of F-16s would further infuriate Vladimir Putin, and likely inflame the badly damaged relationship between Russia and the West.

President Emmanuel Macron has said France does not exclude sending fighter jets to Ukraine, but laid out multiple conditions before such a significant step might be taken.

France has sent Ukraine air defence systems, rocket launcher units, cannons and other military equipment and has pledged to send armoured surveillance and combat vehicles, but has stopped short of sending battle tanks or heavier weaponry.

Asked at a news conference in The Hague on Monday whether France was considering sending warplanes, Mr Macron said 'nothing is excluded' as long as certain conditions are met.

After completing a review, the Prime Minister told his Cabinet on Tuesday that a 'prolonged stalemate' in the war in Ukraine 'would only benefit Russia' and President Vladimir Putin, according to No10.

He said they must seize an 'opportunity to accelerate UK support' to give Ukraine 'the best chance of success and make the most of the window of opportunity where Russian forces were on the back foot'.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace shared US estimates that 180,000 Russian troops have been killed or injured in the year-long invasion. That is compared to around 15,000 killed during the decade-long war in Afghanistan.

The Ukrainian air force is currently equipped with Soviet-era Russian fighters, mainly the Mig-29, which first flew in 1977

The Kremlin has also lost two-thirds of its tanks, Mr Wallace said, according to Downing Street's account of the Cabinet meeting.

A national security official said Russian forces are suffering from equipment and munition shortages and have seen 'significant attrition among some of their most capable fighting forces and officer corps'.

Other Western officials were more cautious in their casualty estimates, suggesting both sides have lost more than 100,000 killed and wounded - with the Russians sustaining a higher proportion of fatalities.

'The Russians have been attacking and that means they have suffered more fatalities than the Ukrainians have,' one official said.

The Prime Minister said his new strategy will be accompanied by 'greater diplomatic efforts and planning work' with Ukraine 'on how to rebuild' once the conflict is over.

Biden offers Russia 20% of Ukraine

The report says the Biden administration officials are divided on how to handle the war in Ukraine

The head of the US spy agency, William Burns, traveled to Moscow earlier this month to offer a peace proposal that includes Ukraine officially giving up "around 20 percent" to Russia, Swiss-German newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) reported on Thursday citing high ranking German bipartisan officials
Burns submitted the peace offering on behalf of the President of the United States Joe Biden, the report noted.

The Washington Post reported earlier that the head of the CIA Burns made a secret visit to Ukraine to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and officials from local intelligence organizations.

CNN's Natasha Bertrand said earlier this month, citing a US official, that talks included measures to de-escalate tensions with Russia.

According to NZZ, citing senior German foreign affairs politician, Burns submitted the proposal plan in mid-January, adding that both Moscow and Kiev rejected it.

The newspaper reported that the US proposal offered "around 20 percent of Ukraine's territory" to Russia, almost the size of the Donbass region.

Ukraine refused the plan "because they are not willing to have their territory divided," while Moscow said it will "win the war in the long run anyway," the report continued.

American news outlet Newsweek cited Sean Davett, the deputy spokesperson at the White House National Security Council, as calling the report "not accurate".

Russia's first deputy permanent representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyanskiy told Newsweek that the NZZ report was "interesting," but that he couldn't "comment [on] speculation."

The news site, citing the German officials, added that Biden wanted to avoid a lengthy war, so he offered to drop the large territory to Russia.

According to the Swiss-German newspaper, Biden announced sending the M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine following the rejection of both Kiev and Moscow of the proposal.

On January 25, Biden announced that the US would send 31 Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine. However, US officials stated that it will take a few months to finalize the training and delivery process before they can be mobilized on the battlefields in Ukraine
Earlier in December, PBS cited Burns in December as saying that “most conflicts end in negotiations, but that requires a seriousness on the part of the Russians in this instance that I don’t think we see," adding that “at least, it’s not our assessment that the Russians are serious at this point about a real negotiation.”

The NZZ report added that US officials were divided on how to approach the war in Ukraine.

Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Burns "wanted to end the war quickly so they could focus on China," while the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin "didn't want to let Russia get away with destroying the rule-based peace order and called for massive military support for Ukraine."

According to the news site, one of Berlin's senior politicians said it is becoming clear that Washington is for a prolonged war of attrition while warning that such a war would inflict great suffering on Germany financially, economically, and militarily.

Berlin, who said earlier that it will not approve sending its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine unless Washington approves sending its Abrams main battle tanks, announced on January 25 that it will provide Kiev with 14 Leopard 2A6 tanks and allow third countries to export them to Ukraine.

The expected delivery of the Leopards is by the end of March or early April, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the day following the announcment.

Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on January 11 that talks between Moscow and Kiev "are now impossible since there are no conditions for them either de facto or de jure."

Polyanskiy told Newsweek that peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow "will happen inevitably. But it's rather between Russia and the West, Ukraine has shown full lack of sovereignty. The more the West waits, the worse the outcome will be for Kyiv."

Commenting on the NZZ report, the White House denied that Burns, on behalf of Biden, offered Russia to take one-fifth of Ukraine's as means of ending the war.

A CIA official told Newsweek that the report was "completely false".

Russia innocent of Nord Stream Attack

German Attorney General Peter Frank stated that there is no evidence of alleged Russian involvement in the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipeline explosions, adding that Sweden and Denmark are also conducting their own investigations

"At the moment there is no evidence, the investigation is still ongoing," Frank told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper when asked about speculation by some politicians about alleged Russian involvement in the attacks.

According to the prosecutor, water and soil samples as well as pipe debris were taken at the blast sites, which are located in the exclusive economic zones of Denmark and Sweden.

He assured that the scene was carefully documented and everything is now being evaluated from a forensic point of view.

"Sweden and Denmark are conducting their own investigations, but we are in contact," the attorney general added.

On September 26, Nord Stream 2 AG, operator of the Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline, reported a gas leak of unknown causes in one of the two pipelines of the infrastructure near the Danish island of Bornholm.

It later transpired that the two lines of the parallel Nord Stream 1 pipeline had also been damaged.

Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service labeled the explosions as terrorist attacks and on September 30 unveiled the possession of evidence pointing to the involvement of certain Western countries.

Danish Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod announced that his country would not allow Russia to participate in the investigation.

On December 15, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia still does not know anything about the conclusions of the investigation into the Nord Stream attacks.

Ukraine corruption scandal

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov resigned from his position amid accusations of arms trade corruption

Ukraine's defense minister will be replaced by the chief of military intelligence following corruption scandals, a senior lawmaker said on Sunday.

"Kyrylo Budanov will head the defense ministry, which is absolutely logical in wartime," said senior lawmaker David Arakhamia, referring to the 37-year-old chief of military intelligence.

Reznikov, 56, will be appointed minister for strategic industries, the lawmaker said without specifying a timeline for the planned re-shuffle.

"War dictates personnel policies," added Arakhamia.

"Time and circumstances require reinforcement and regrouping. This is happening now and will continue to happen in the future," he added.

"The enemy is preparing to advance. We are preparing to defend ourselves."

Earlier, Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zhelezniak stated that Reznikov could be replaced by Ukrainian Chief of Defense Intelligence Kyrylo Budanov, with the decision potentially being announced by the cabinet as early as Sunday evening.

"I have not had any talks about stepping down as the minister. I repeat my answer to other media: 'Every official should understand that they are in office not for their entire life. They should start a [new] stage and complete it.' That is why I am ready for any scenario," Reznikov has earlier said as quoted by Ukrainska Pravda newspaper.

The Minister went on to say that he was proud of what he has accomplished throughout his tenure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky just announced a substantial government overhaul. On January 24, at least nine top civil servants were fired for corruption, including four deputy ministers and five regional governors, while numerous more high-ranking officials, including Deputy Prosecutor General Oleksiy Symonenko and Deputy Head of Zelensky's office Kyrylo Tymoshenko, resigned.

It is worth noting that corruption swept Ukraine long before the beginning of the war. Today, corruption plagued Kiev especially as hundreds of millions of dollars in weapons and aid stream into the country, and the cost of reconstruction activities is anticipated to be in the billions.

Furthermore, many have been warning that foreign weapons being supplied to Ukraine are sold on the black market, most notably in Africa.

DPR Ukrainians use chemical weapons

Denis Pushilin reveals that he has been receiving reports of chemical weapons being used by Ukrainian forces for approximately three weeks now

Ukrainian forces have used chemical weapons on the front lines in the Donbass in the regions of Bakhmut and Ugledar, as per Donetsk People's Republic head Denis Pushilin.

In an interview with Russian media on Monday, Pushilin said, "According to the statements of our forces, and commanders who came forward with such information, there are facts of the use of chemical compounds causing sickness among our servicemen not only in the Artyomovsk [Bakhmut] direction but also in the Ugledar direction."

Pushilin exposed that he has been receiving such reports for approximately three weeks now.

"They are dropping [chemical weapons] from drones on the locations of our forces," the DPR head confirmed.

Earlier, Yan Gagin, a Pushilin advisor, said as quoted by Russian media that the Ukrainian side was using chemical agents and that the chemicals were causing acute dizziness, nausea, and vomiting among soldiers.

Gagin affirmed that the Ukrainian side has been deploying chemical weapons for some time, with attacks taking place "along the entire front line as substances producing nausea, choking, and coughing," with the chemicals being "sprayed from special containers fitted on drones."

A video published by Ukrainian military apparently shows them preparing to use #chemicalweapons, possibly #phosgene, prohibited by @UN CWC, against Russian military. Letters “OB” stand for toxic munition. This also explains why the gas cylinders need to be stored in the fridge. pic.twitter.com/eDmB43605g
    — Russian Embassy, UK (@RussianEmbassy) January 13, 2023
According to the official, the Ukrainian military openly boasted about their possession of these illegal weapons on social media, posting footage of specially-designed drones and imported gas grenades.

Gagin recommended that information on the use of these illicit weapons be collected and reported to the United Nations on a regular basis.

Last spring, Russian and Donbass forces began reporting on Ukraine's purported plans to use chemical weapons. Last year, the Russian military displayed DJI Agras T30 unmanned aerial vehicles recovered in Mariupol, as well as protective equipment like gas masks delivered to Kiev with military help by Germany and the Czech Republic. DJI drones are designed specifically for agricultural applications, with sprayer equipment, onboard cameras, and navigation devices.

In addition to fears about chemical weapons being used against Russian soldiers, Moscow has often expressed concern about Ukraine using these weapons in provocations on important infrastructure and civilians in order to accuse Russia of war crimes.

Along with chemical weapons, the Russian military has routinely briefed policymakers, the public, and the international community on extensive pathogen research and bioweapons projects in Ukraine that are funded and controlled by the US.

The big picture

This comes following a fleet of Western narratives that aim to raise fears across the globe regarding a potential nuclear disaster. The West has been accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of intensifying the Ukraine war, claiming that Russia is willing to deploy nuclear weapons against Ukraine.

But Russia has reiterated several times that its nuclear deterrence policy was guided by the postulate of the inadmissibility of nuclear war, as there could be no winners in such a conflict

It is noteworthy that the Pentagon has repeatedly stressed that the United States has no indication that Russia intends to use a nuclear weapon in the Ukraine war

In early October, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said there is no evidence in sight that suggests Russia's intention to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

Concurrently, reports about Ukraine preparing to use a dirty bomb in Ukraine to blame Russia for using nuclear weapons have been circulating for about months now.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky even underlined that NATO must carry out a preemptive strike against Russia instead of waiting for Russia's nuclear attacks.

In light of that, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that those who attempt to blackmail his country with nuclear weapons will find it coming back to bite them.

Anti-Militarization protest

Britain played a key role in the ensuing regime change operation which saw a Western-backed coalition of anti-Russian neo-Nazi elements come to power

On Saturday, February 4, the Truth and Neutrality Alliance, a broad coalition of anti-war activists, held a protest outside the British Embassy against London’s role in the escalation of the almost nine-year-long conflict in Ukraine.

Following then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s November 2013 decision to suspend an EU trade deal in order to pursue closer ties with neighboring Russia, Britain would play a key role in the ensuing regime change operation which saw a Western-backed coalition of anti-Russian neo-Nazi elements come to power.

With the ethnic Russian Donetsk and Lugansk regions in the east of Ukraine facing the realistic prospect of genocide at the hands of the new regime, they would ultimately break away from Kiev’s rule in April 2014, following five months of anti-Russian violence

An eight-year-long war on both Republics would follow, with Kiev receiving key military assistance from Britain in doing so, ultimately leading to 14,000 deaths.

In February 2022, with attempts to resolve the conflict peacefully via the Minsk Accords having proved fruitless, Moscow’s hand would be forced and a special military operation was launched into Ukraine in order to protect ethnic Russians and destroy any military infrastructure that would have been used against Russia had Kiev ultimately gone on to become a NATO member - the alliance having failed to honor a post-Cold War agreement to not expand eastward.

Again, Britain would continue to increase its military support of Kiev through the training of Ukrainian personnel and also the provision of billions of pounds worth of weaponry, leading to the precarious situation where the world now lies on the brink of nuclear war.

In response, a number of Irish Republicans, anti-war activists, and members of Ireland’s Russian community would gather outside the British Embassy to call for de-escalation in Ukraine and for the 26 County State to remain militarily neutral.

In a blatant act of political policing, six members of the Free State’s secretive Special Detective Unit would demand the names and addresses of those in attendance. Undeterred, the protesters would remain outside the Embassy for an hour, highlighting the thousands killed in Kiev’s eight-year war on the Donbass and the western media censorship of the conflict. The protest would conclude with several short speeches, with a similar event planned for Dublin city center on the 25th of February.

US destroyed Nord Stream

Acclaimed investigative journalist and Pulitzer prize winner Seymour Hersh reports that the United States was behind the explosions that destroyed Nord Stream

An account holding the name of famed US investigative journalist and Pulitzer award winner Seymour Hersh said on Wednesday that US Navy divers planted explosives to destroy the Nord Stream pipelines last year.

"Last June, the Navy divers, operating under the cover of a widely publicized mid-summer NATO exercise known as BALTOPS 22, planted the remotely triggered explosives that, three months later, destroyed three of the four Nord Stream pipelines, according to a source with direct knowledge of the operational planning," Hersh wrote in his Substack newsletter.

The White House responded and dismissed the claims as "false and complete fiction."

Hersh later confirmed to the Russian news agency Sputnik that he authored the investigative report in question.

"Of course," Hersh told Sputnik when asked whether he authored the article published on a Substack account created shortly before its publication.

Flightradar24 data showed in late September that US military helicopters habitually and on numerous occasions circled for hours over the site of the Nord Stream pipeline incident near Bornholm Island.

A US Navy Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk helicopter spent hours loitering over the location of the damaged natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea near Bornholm for several days in a row, September 1, 2, and 3, in particular.

According to the article, the United States decided to sabotage the pipelines after a lengthy debate that lasted more than nine months inside the US national security community.

"Last June, the Navy divers, operating under the cover of a widely publicized mid-summer NATO exercise known as BALTOPS 22, planted the remotely triggered explosives that, three months later, destroyed three of the four Nord Stream pipelines, according to a source with direct knowledge of the operational planning," the report read.

The revelation of the report prompted Moscow to ask the United States to comment, saying it had repeatedly said that the United States and NATO member states were involved in the explosions at Nord Stream, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

"We have repeatedly stated Russia's position on the involvement of the United States and NATO, noting that they did not hide it, bragging to the whole world about their intention to destroy the civilian infrastructure through which Europe received Russian energy resources," Zakharova said.

"We have also regularly underscored the reluctance of Denmark, Germany, and Sweden to conduct an open investigation and the opposition to Russia's participation in it. And this is despite the fact that our country has suffered huge costs. Now, the White House should comment on all these facts," she added.

The explosions occurred on September 26 at three of the four strings of Nord Stream 1 and 2 underwater pipelines, which are designed to transport a total of 110 billion cubic meters of Russian gas to Europe each year.

Separate investigations were launched by Germany, Denmark, and Sweden into the suspected sabotage, with German media reporting trust issues among the three EU nations. The Russian prosecutor's office announced an investigation into possible international terrorism.

However, Denmark and Sweden have barred Russia from investigating the attack. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said this exclusion highlighted the West's double standards.

Moreover, the German investigators probing the explosions that hit Russia's Nord Stream pipelines do not have any evidence at hand proving that Russia is behind the catastrophic blasts that took place in the Baltic Sea in September 2022, German Attorney General Peter Frank said on Saturday Die Welt reported.

Frank revealed that two research ships took water and soil samples, as well as samples from the remains of the pipelines, noting that the whole incident was "comprehensively documented". "We are currently evaluating all of this forensically."

Additionally, Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin said Denmark does not provide any information on the progress and results of the investigation into the explosions at the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which raises concerns.

Barbin said that the Danish side is currently not providing any information on the progress and results of the investigation into gas pipeline sabotage.

With the anniversary of the Ukraine war nearing, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was asked about Russia's plans to mark this date. The Foreign Minister noted that there were many things that need to be remembered and demonstrated that would depict how the US establishes its hegemony.

"We are preparing a sort of a report of what happened this year, what we managed to discover, and this is not only the US military biological programs, from which they are trying to disown, they lie, as always, and not only the direct participation of the United States in the explosions at Nord Stream," Lavrov said.

Lavrov said that the statements made by Victoria Nuland, the US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, concerning the Nord Stream pipeline explosions show that Washington was complicit in the incident.

Nuland said that "the [US] administration is very gratified to know that Nord Stream 2" would no longer be operational.

Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed the situation on the West. "It’s clear to everyone who benefits from this. And the one who benefits from this is the one who did it," Putin stressed at the time.
