Town plagued by armed gangs

Armed gangs who are terrorising a town have prompted a bereaved mother to warn that more children are likely to die

The mum, who believes her young son killed himself over death threats directed at him and the family, has pleaded with the hooligans to “stop ruining lives”.

In a separate incident in the town, Khayri McLean, 15, was stabbed to death last month outside his school. Two youths have been charged with murder.

Weeks earlier a man had his hand sliced off at a nearby working men’s club.

And in another broad daylight attack recently, two youths were wounded outside a town centre church in a stabbing attack involving a samurai sword.

Locals say the knife culture in Huddersfield, West Yorks, has reached “epidemic” levels. Police were given special powers for the third time recently after a masked gang ran through the streets with machetes.

But despite dawn raids, residents say they are still terrified. One shocked man saw youths sharpening their knives on a wall near his home.

Others say they are too scared to open their doors because gang members have been running into their homes to hide from rivals.

Anne Marshall told the Mirror how her son Jamie, 14, was threatened on Snapchat the night before he took his own life in a nearby field three years ago.

She said: “The police need to do better. We’re going to lose more of our children.”

Anne, 39, added in a direct message to the gangs: “You’re playing stupid games and ruining people’s lives for ever, ruining families’ lives. Just stop. Nobody needs to carry knives.”

Talking about her son’s death, she said: “He had no mental health problems, no previous attempts, no self-harm issues.

“This all came from him being threatened that he would be stabbed to death and that they would kill me afterwards.”

Khayri McLean, 15 was pinned down outside his school and stabbed

A Snapchat message, seen by the Mirror, which was sent to Jamie, said: “I’ll kill your whole family.”

Anne said: “They’re carrying knives that have serrated blades... machetes and samurai swords. These children are walking around with them, tucked into their pants and in their bags.

“How many more children have to die? How many more children have to be too scared to go outside?”

She said Jamie was told he would be killed on his way to school because of the way his hair had been cut.

Anne added that despite police being told about the perpetrator, a boy not much older than Jamie, officers did not interview him for nine months.

The mum said she was told that in a police interview the boy admitted making threats to kill with a knife, but that officers did not press charges as it did not reach the threshold for intent and because the boy had no previous convictions. A date for Jamie’s inquest is yet to be set. In Huddersfield there are at least five main gangs operating in Fartown, Brackenhall, Dalton, Deighton, Rawthorpe and Walpole.

A former gang member in the town, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Mirror: “I live in a gang-affiliated area and I’ve lived on the blocks all my life. I know what it’s like.
Flowers and messages left at the scene where Khayri Mclean was murdered close to North Huddersfield Trust School

“Kids are running the areas, and residents are too scared to say stuff.

“The situation is crazy and it’s only going to get worse. They go on each other’s territory and start sh**. Recently the Fartown lot went up to Dalton with samurai swords...

“All they see is the gangs, so that’s their role models. It’s an epidemic. They know where the weapons are. It’s very organised. It’s like a network with links all around the country. Gangs are affiliated with each other as far as London.”

Knife crime has soared in England and Wales over the past 10 years, with a 46% rise in reported offences involving a knife or sharp instrument, according to an anti-knife crime charity.

The ex-gang member said travelling to London or Manchester is called going OT, meaning “out there”, to get drugs from homes where vulnerable addicts live, which is called “trapping”.

He added: “A lot of it is poverty. They see their mum [who is a single parent] working two or three jobs and they are seeing a man on the road earning more money in a day than the mother gets a week.

“When I was involved you could have gang members from all over Huddersfield joining crews but these days it is a postcode matter.

“The slightest word taken the wrong way on Snapchat can see you in serious trouble.

“It’s amazing how quickly these people can turn on one another. It could be over a girl, drugs, money, and alleged slights and that’s it ‘Boom! Boom!’. I think there will be more deaths ahead.

“It’s all fuelled by Americanised music, hip-hop and drill, which is a massive influence. I’ve tried to teach my kids ‘don’t look at the glitter what the olders show you; the money, the clothes, the cars – you could end up in the graveyard or the jail’.”
Gang culture is being glamorised online. In Fartown, where Khayri was killed, a rapper recently posted a video showing a “gang” making gun signs and calling for an increase in the murder rate in the town.

Community activist Stephen Knight, 54, who is from Huddersfield, said: “We need a combined 10-year plan with police, council and community groups.

“It’s happening everywhere, not just Huddersfield. It’s scary now.

“I’ve had a gun shoved in my face, I’ve had a machete pulled on me over the last 15/20 years but I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near any more. They are not scared of getting caught.”

Chief Supt James Griffiths, District Commander of Kirklees police, said: “I fully understand residents’ concerns but can reassure them the force and partners have absolutely invested resources in tackling this issue and we have been bringing knife crime down in Kirklees district.

“Crimes involving knives have fallen year on year in Kirklees since 2019, with a 6% reduction in offences in the 12 months up to August 2022.

“Violent crime has also reduced by 17% in the same 12-month period.”

He said a dedicated team seized 67 weapons from the streets of Kirklees between March and September and made 222 arrests.

Chief Supt Griffiths added: “Further reducing knife and gang crime will remain our focus in the coming weeks.

“And residents will continue to see high visibility police operations in their neighbourhoods.”

As you see gang violence is spreading across major cities within the UK, people here have no interest in international politics. They care about being too afraid to leave their home. They care about not being able to open their windows on a hot day

Blacks strip-searched in UK

An official report accuses police of abusing their power to strip-search children, with Black children much more likely than white children to be selected by officers for the ordeal

Black youths 3 times more likely to be arrested because they are 3 times more likely to commit crimes

Data collected by the office of the children's commissioner found that officers have been abusing their power with at least 2,847 recorded strip-searches of children pre-arrest taking place across England and Wales between 2018 and 2022 under stop and search powers.

38% of children who were strip-searched were Black, according to the report that will be released on Monday. Black children make up 5.9% of the population, which means that they were six times over-represented.

A quarter of the black children who were strip-searched were 10-15 years of age, the youngest was eight.

Reason: black drug dealers use under age children to carry drugs because they do not go to prison when caught

Rachel de Souza, the children's commissioner, expressed her shock by the ethnic disproportionality.

On his part, the president of the National Black Police Association, Insp Andy George, said it was another example of institutional racism – which police leaders deny exists.

A report by Louise Casey last week concluded that the Metropolitan police display institutional racism and that the discrimination was "baked in".

The report showed that the police were not following rules in more than half of these strip searches as in more than half of the cases. In more than half of the cases, there was no appropriate adult present. A few of these searches took place in public view.

Some of the strip searches were even conducted by an officer of a different gender than the child being stripped.

Reason: thought to be better to use female officers with children

Last year, there was outrage when a 15-year-old schoolgirl in London who was on her period was pulled out of class to be strip-searched.

“All children deserve protection and safeguarding. It is shocking that young Black boys are so disproportionately subject to strip searches, often without an adult present. We hope that guidelines on strip searches can be tightened and the issue of racial disparity is taken seriously by all chief constables," the president of the National Black Police Association said of the report.

We hope that guidelines on strip-searches can be tightened and the issue of racial disparity is taken seriously by all chief constables.”

Excellent idea to search black children,, helps to get them away from the dealers who do not want to use children once they are known to the police

The report will say the practice is not limited only to the Met, and it will make recommendations for the rules to be tightened. A recent poll found Black children’s trust in the police was at 36%, half that of white children.

The Casey report said strip-searching as done by the Met was an example of “over-policing and disproportionate use of powers against certain communities” and may be due to “‘adultification', where Black children are treated as adults and as a threat, therefore justifying greater use of force or intrusive interventions."

Black teenagers are much more likely to shoplift than white youths. In UK police do not get involved in shop lifting cases unless there is undue violence. Shoplifters are not charged unless there is proof they had stolen more than £200 worth of items, Then it is the store owners who have to pay to take the shop lifters to court. Many small shops live in fear of black youths stealing from them and offer no resistance for fear of violence

A 17-year-old boy was found with a single stab injury in Brigstock Road, Thornton Heath on Monday morning.

Another man, aged in his mid-70s, also suffered a slash injury in the street fight.

Both were taken to hospital before being arrested on suspicion of GBH, affray and possession of an offensive weapon.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 08:45hrs on Monday, 24 July to reports of two males in possession of a knife on Brigstock Road in Thornton Heath.

“Officers attended and found a 17-year-old male with a stab injury. He was taken to a South London hospital by the London Ambulance Service; his condition is not life-threatening.

Milton Hurlington stabbed to death

Five men have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a man who was fatally stabbed in the arm in a north west London park

Milton Hurlington was attacked in King Edward VII Park, Wembley, at roughly 9.50pm last Monday.

He staggered to the Dene where paramedics battled to save his life but he died at the scene.

Five people, all men and aged in their late teens to early twenties, were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of murder. Scotland Yard says they all remain in custody.

DCI Linda Bradley is continuing a public appeal for information as her team carry out the investigation.

She said: “First and foremost, my thoughts continue to be with Milton’s family and friends at what is an incredibly difficult time. Specialist support is being given by my team.

“We believe Milton was attacked in King Edward VII Park and then made his way to The Dene, where residents discovered him and called the emergency services.

“These recent arrests are an important development but I remain keen to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything out of the ordinary in the park and surrounding areas on Monday 17 July between 6pm and 10:45pm to come forward.

“Please do not hesitate to get in touch, no matter how insignificant you may think your information to be- it could be the key to our investigation.”

A post-mortem examination has established cause of death as blood loss following a stab wound to the arm.

The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed of the death as officers had been in contact earlier in the day with Mr Hurlington.

Two man and a woman were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and later released on bail to return at a future date.

Anyone with any information that could help the investigation should call police on 101 and give reference 8258/17JUL23.

People in inner cities living in FEAR

Far too many attacks, stabbings, shootings and burglaries for me to keep up

Most attacks and minor stabbings go unreported due to fear of reprisals

On social housing estates people have grills on their windows and metal sheets on their doors

Most people in such areas are confined to their homes and survive in a state of siege

Anywhere has to be safer than UK cities

Seems that London is like Marseilles or the suburbs of Paris.

Paris itself is eaten by crack and all these new drugs addict as USA is destroyed by Fentanyl.

Drugs will destroy Western countries more than terrorism I guess.

Armed Met officers turn in weapons

The Ministry of Defence is offering soldiers to support armed police in London after dozens of Met officers stood down from firearms duties

More than 100 officers have turned in permits allowing them to carry weapons, a source told the BBC. There are more than 2,500 armed officers in the Met.

Police said the action was being taken after an officer was charged with the murder of unarmed Chris Kaba, 24.

Met chief Sir Mark Rowley welcomed a Home Office review into armed policing.

In an open letter to the home secretary, he said it was right his force was "held to the highest standards" - but the current system was undermining his officers and suggested they needed more legal protections.

A Met Police officer appeared in court on Thursday.

In a statement, the Met said some officers were "worried" about how the Crown Prosecution Service decision to bring a charge "impacts on them".

One former officer - who left the Met's specialist firearms command a few months ago - told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme that the risk to officers and their families "is just too great".

Speaking anonymously, he explained: "What is obvious to me, they are not acting out of anger or petulance.

"It's not a co-ordinated protest. These are individuals with partners and families who are incredibly committed to their profession.

"They're incredibly concerned it's not worth it anymore."

He added that it would be "a very sad day" for policing if armed troops were being forced to step in to help.

It comes after the MoD said it received a request - known as Military Aid to the Civil Authorities (MACA) - from the Home Office to "provide routine counter-terrorism contingency support to the Metropolitan Police, should it be needed".

A MACA is offered to the police or the NHS in emergency situations - the military helped medical staff in the Covid pandemic and covered for striking border staff and paramedics last year.

The Met said it was a "contingency option" that would only be used "in specific circumstances and where an appropriate policing response was not available".

Military staff would not be used "in a routine policing capacity", it added.

On Saturday, the Met said its own officers still make up the vast majority of armed police in the capital but they were being supported by a limited number of firearms officers from neighbouring forces.

According to London Assembly figures, in April there were 2,595 authorised firearm officers in the Met Police.

It is a figure which has steadily decreased every year since 2018 when there were 2,841 licenced to carry a gun.

Announcing the review, Home Secretary Suella Braverman said the public "depend on our brave firearms officers to protect us".

"In the interest of public safety they have to make split-second decisions under extraordinary pressures."

She said that officers have her "full backing".

"I will do everything in my power to support them," she added.

Chris Kaba was hit by a gunshot fired by a Met officer into the vehicle he was driving

In his letter to the home secretary, the Met Police commissioner said that a system where officers are investigated for "safely pursuing suspects" should not have been allowed to develop.

Sir Mark said he would "make no comment" on any ongoing legal matters, but "the issues raised in this letter go back further".

He said firearms officers are concerned that they will face years of legal proceedings, "even if they stick to the tactics and training they have been given".

Previous reviews have not delivered change, he added.

"Officers need sufficient legal protection to enable them to do their job and keep the public safe, and the confidence that it will be applied consistently and without fear or favour," he wrote.

But in instances where officers act improperly, Sir Mark said the system "needs to move swiftly" rather than "tying itself in knots pursuing good officers through multiple legal processes".

Former Greater Manchester Police chief constable Sir Peter Fahy said any review would "not be wide enough", adding he believed there are issues around morale and how police prevent organised crime.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme there were often "issues about intelligence and information" when police responded to criminals suspected of having a firearm.

"It is part of a bigger picture where there is a huge level of discontent among ordinary police officers where there is a huge gulf between policing and the Home Office," Sir Peter said.

"Officers understand the impact of some of the serious cases, particularly involving the Met Police, but feel a lot of the criticism is unbalanced, that they are underappreciated and that the media and politicians don't understand the reality of day-to-day policing."

But the prime minister backed the home secretary's review, adding that armed police need "clarity".

Speaking in Hertfordshire on Monday, Rishi Sunak said: "Our firearms officers do an incredibly difficult job.

"They are making life or death decisions in a split-second to keep us safe and they deserve our gratitude for their bravery."

According to Home Office figures, between March 2022 and March 2023 the Met Police took part in 18,395 firearms operations - accounting for 204% of all firearms operations in England and Wales.

In that time there were only 10 incidents across England and Wales when an officer opened fire at a person, the figures show.

On 5 September 2022, Mr Kaba was fatally hit by a gunshot fired by a Met Police officer into the vehicle he was driving in Streatham, south London

The construction worker, who was months away from becoming a father when he was shot, died in hospital the following day.

It later emerged the Audi Mr Kaba was driving, which did not belong to him, had been linked by police to a gun incident the day before.

His death prompted a number of protests.
