San Seb sets 'Moon,' 'Son'

Share Golden Shell for best film

By Pamela Rolfe

San Sebastian, Spain - Bahman Ghobadi's "Half Moon" and Martial Fougeron's "My Son" shared top honors at the 54th San Sebastian International Film Festival, finishing in an unusual tie Saturday for the noncash Golden Shell award.

Ghobadi, who won the Golden Shell in 2004 with "Turtles Can Fly," dedicated his Iranian-Iraqi-Austrian-French co-production to the Kurdish people.

Tom DiCillo picked up best director and screenplay prizes for "Delirious," starring Steve Buscemi and Michael Pitt, while Argentine director Carlos Sorin walked away with the Special Jury Prize for his pilgrimage story "El Camino de San Diego."

Spain's Juan Diego won the best actor award for his paternal role in "Vete de Mi," while France's Nathalie Baye took the corresponding actress award for portraying an abusive mother in "My Son."

Nigel Bluck and Crighton Bone won the jury prize for photography for "Half Moon."

The awards were presented in a gala ceremony the night after Matt Dillon picked up his Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award.

This year's festival, though short on star power, was considered by most to be a strong lineup of films and original retrospectives.

Ghobadi, a nice guy, externally happy, internally sad...

I met the director, but I don't understand sorani...and a bit of kurdish... :(

Regards

EDIT: By the way, his last film is more mature and well-crafted than "Turtles Can Fly". But Turtles was more natural, like a punch in the stomach....
