Kurdish film festival in Moscow

The Russian capital will host the second Kurdish film festival on Wednesday where 54 films and documentaries will be displayed with aim of promoting cinema as an essential tool of art and social change

The Moscow Kurdish Film Festival (MKFF) is the second of its kind. The two-week-long event seeks to promote cultural exchange between Kurds and Russians.

“The audience will get acquainted with the national culture and language of the ancient people [Kurds], as well as its centuries-old history and traditions, and current struggles,” read the festival’s press release sent to Rudaw earlier this week.

“Through the demonstration of the films dedicated to the Kurdish theme, the festival contributes to the development of International cinema, preservation of national identity and the native language of Kurds, as well as the opportunity to share their historical and cultural heritage with other nations living in Russia,” the statement added.

This year’s event is dedicated to commemorate Kurdish film director Yilmaz Guney who passed in 1984 in Paris. The festival will kick off with his movie The Road, which received the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1982
The movie tells the story of a group of Kurdish prisoners on a one-week furlough from prison, introducing audiences to the Kurdish language and music at a time when they were banned in Turkey. Many people consider it to be the birth of Kurdish cinema.

Kurdish film festivals are held frequently.

Moscow held its first Kurdish film festival in July last year.

London held the Global Kurdish Film Festival virtually last year as well where it broadcasted more than 100 Kurdish films, classics, and new releases.

Fourth International Moscow Kurdish Film Festival

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The fourth International Moscow Kurdish Film Festival is scheduled to take place from September 18 to 22, with media sponsorship provided by Kurdistan24. The festival aims to celebrate Kurdish cinema and foster an intercultural dialogue with Russia

Festival manager, Gulizar Karam Gardanzari, on Friday told Kurdistan24 that seven feature films and eight documentaries have been selected for screening, along with 14 short films and nine short documentaries. This year’s event will maintain its tradition of bringing together filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts from across the globe, continuing its mission of cultural exchange.

Gardanzari emphasized that the 2024 edition will focus on the Yezidi community and the ancient religion of Mesopotamia, themes reflected in the festival's promotional materials. This focus underscores the importance of preserving Kurdish culture and history through film.

A total of 12 countries will be represented at the festival, including Kurdistan, Iraq, Turkey, Iran, France, Syria, Canada, and the Netherlands. These films showcase the rich diversity of Kurdish cinema while offering a platform for filmmakers to share their stories with an international audience.

First launched in 2021, the festival has grown steadily over the years, with Kurdistan24 serving as a key partner by providing media coverage and support. The outlet has committed to offering comprehensive and objective coverage of this year's festival, in line with its principles of social responsibility.

The Moscow Kurdish Film Festival has become an important cultural event, promoting the rich heritage and cinematic talent of the Kurdish people.

Kurdish Filmmaker in Finals

A young filmmaker from Garmian is making waves on the international stage with his documentary film "980," which has advanced to the final stage of an international film festival in Australia

Nabard Fuad, who holds a doctorate in film dialogue, told BasNews that "980" has already participated in 75 international festivals, standing out among more than 2,500 films to reach the semi-finals. The documentary’s success marks a significant achievement for the young director.

Nabard Fuad’s academic work is also groundbreaking; his doctoral thesis focuses on the analysis of political discourse in film dialogue. He noted that this is the first doctoral thesis of its kind in the world, highlighting his innovative approach to the study of film and politics.

Originally from Khanaqin, Fuad later moved to Kalar in the Garmian Administration, where he has settled. Before embarking on his filmmaking journey, he worked as a journalist for several media outlets.
