Kurdistan condemns Iran’s attacks

The Kurdistan Region Presidency on Wednesday condemned Iran’s deadly drone and missile attacks on the Region earlier in the day, calling on the Iraqi government to prevent such attacks

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Wednesday showered with ballistic missiles and suicide drones bases of Iranian-Kurdish opposition groups in the Kurdistan Region under the pretext of fueling protest across the country. The IRGC has confirmed responsibility for the attacks which, according to an initial tally obtained from the Kurdish health ministry, killed at least nine people and wounded 32 others.

“We condemn the bombing of the Kurdistan Region by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s forces on several targets and the casualties among civilians as we categorically reject the repetition of these attacks,” said the office of President Nechirvan Barzani in a statement.

“The Kurdistan Region’s position is clear that it will not allow any security threat to the neighboring countries from its borders, while emphasizing that the Kurdistan Region should not be used as a battleground to settle disputes among rival parties,” it added.

The Presidency also called on the Iraqi government “to fulfil its duty and protect the country and its territorial integrity.”

The attacks have also been condemned by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi government as well as some Western countries.

Iran for the past week used artillery to attack the Kurdistan Region in an attempt to target these groups. The offences were triggered by the mass protests which engulfed the country after the death of Kurdish woman, Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, in police custody.

The IRGC in a statement confirmed the use of drones and missiles in the attacks, saying the operations will continue until all bases of Iranian-Kurdish opposition groups are dismantled and the KRG fulfilling its duty in doing so.
