Nearly 25 years ago, Iraqi forces killed thousands of their own civilians using chemical weapons on the Kurdish town of Halabja.

The BBC's World Affairs Editor, John Simpson, has revisited the town to see the lasting effects of the attack.

Chemicals still being found 25 years after Halabja attack

The Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq is considering bringing in British experts to investigate a chemical gas attack nearly 25 years ago, in which thousands of civilians were killed.

Parts of the town of Halabja remain contaminated by lethal toxic gases used in the attack, which the Kurdish authorities are trying to establish was an act of genocide by the then Iraqi president, Saddam Hussein. Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a chemical weapons specialist, explains how traces of chemicals are still being found in Halabja today.
