Sulaymaniyah officials accused of selling

The Gorran movement accused party, government and military personnel on Friday of selling plots of land in the city of Al-Sulaymaniyah

While Ali Hama Saleh, a member of the Kurdistan Region Parliament for the Movement, said on Thursday that influential personnel in Al-Sulaymaniyah were planning to set fire to tens of dunams of lands containing natural trees, aiming to turn them into showrooms for cars.

A former Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) commander has alleged that the PKK is engaging in widespread drug trafficking and recruiting minors, posing a significant threat to stability in the Kurdistan Region and beyond

In an interview with BasNews, Khalil Mohammed claimed the PKK’s influence remains strong in the Sulaymaniyah region, with armed factions operating in areas like Raparin, Koya, Chamchamal, Takya district, Garmian, and Makhmur.

“The PKK is pressuring families in these areas, maintaining influence through financial support and by involving children in their operations,” he said.

Mohammed argued that the PKK has deviated from its Kurdish nationalist ideals, focusing instead on personal and financial gains.

“They kill Kurdish youth, particularly in North Kurdistan [Turkish Kurdistan], where nationalist sentiments have declined. Their actions have become increasingly aligned with terrorist activities, eroding trust in the organization,” he added.

The former commander also accused the PKK of operating drug factories, especially in the Qandil mountains and Sulaymaniyah region, generating “hundreds of millions of dinars” from drug trafficking.

He suggested that the PKK has established opium fields and employs experts to manage production and sales, posing a direct threat to Europe, as per reports from a European Union investigation team.

According to Mohammed, the PKK’s actions are intended to destabilize the Kurdistan Region and specifically target the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), undermining Kurdish autonomy.

He further alleged that PKK operatives have received support from some officials within the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in these drug-related activities, compromising the Region’s security

PUK Forces Close PKK-Affiliated Media

The security forces of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Sulaymaniyah have shut down several companies and organisations linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), despite the PUK leadership often portraying themselves as supporters of the PKK, according to BasNews

On Tuesday, December 31, PUK security forces simultaneously raided and closed down the organizations Newgar, Marziya, and RJAK, along with the company Gizngi Barbayan.

While these groups claim to operate in fields such as artistic development, women’s empowerment, and media, reports allege that all of them are affiliated with the PKK and serve its interests in Sulaymaniyah.

The company Gizngi Barbayan, which produces programs for the PKK-affiliated Zhn TV, issued a statement via PKK media condemning the closures.

It described the action as “subordination to the decision of the Kurdistan invaders” and vowed to reopen its headquarters.

The PUK security forces and party-affiliated media have yet to release an official statement explaining the reasons for the closures.

However, analysts speculate that the move may reflect a covert understanding between the PUK and Turkey.

Earlier this month, PUK senior leader and KRG Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani met with Turkish Ambassador to Iraq Anıl Bora İnan to discuss regional security developments.

Observers suggest this meeting could be connected to the recent actions against PKK-affiliated entities in Sulaymaniyah.
