Kurdish children to be educated on Anfal genocide

As Kurds across the world this week mark the 28th anniversary of the Anfal genocide, in which an estimated 180,000 Kurds were killed by the Baathist army, authorities say school children will be provided better knowledge about the infamous campaign that still lives in the collective memory of the nation.

According to the ministry of Anfal Victims, teachers will be asked to speak about the genocide and its aftermath for school children and provide them with historical data.

“We have asked them to particularly speak about the eight stages of the Anfal Campaign between 1986 and ’88 in which the atrocities began and concluded,” Ibrahim Muhammad at the ministry told Rudaw.

The Anfal Campaign was a genocidal crusade against the Kurdish resistance movement in northern Iraq, led by the Iraqi government in the final stages of Iran-Iraq war.

The campaign took its name from the al-Anfal verse in the Quran which was used as a code name by the former Iraqi government for a series of systematic attacks against its Kurdish population, conducted between 1986 and 1989 and culminating in 1988.

Ibrahim says eleven collections of documents on Anfal have been found and translated into Kurdish which the general public will soon have access to.

“We have also asked the Muslim clerics to talk about the Anfal in their Friday prayers and keep the memory alive,” Muhammad said.

Nearly 3,000 villages were also destroyed and thousands of other families were displaced as a result of the Anfal.

Almost all regions Kurdistan were subject to the genocidal campaign but the bulk of atrocities took place in Garmian region where entire communities were demolished while the population was forcefully moved to concentration camps in south Iraq where they faced execution and disappearance.

I hope that Kurdish Adults and Children living in Turkish occupied Kurdistan, will learn about Dersim

Sadly, there are actually some Kurds who believe Kurds and Turks should remain living together as brothers in one country X(
