Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Iraq (KRG.org) – The Chinese Ambassador to Iraq, Mr Ni Jian, met with Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani yesterday to explore ways of strengthening ties with the Kurdistan Region.

Ambassador Jian presented his credentials to the Iraqi President last year November, and this is his first visit to Kurdistan.

In his meeting with Prime Minister Barzani, he said that his government was interested in expanding ties with Kurdistan in the areas of scientific research, culture, business and trade. He said, “There are already a number of Chinese companies active in this region, and we want to attract further Chinese businesses to participate in the rebuilding process of the country as a whole”.

He reiterated his government’s commitment to expanding bilateral relations with Kurdistan and further developing their partnership with Iraq.

The Prime Minister encouraged the ambassador to explore areas of mutual interests, including industry, agriculture and tourism, and welcomed their plans for a consulate in Erbil as an ‘important step’ to establishing political ties and with promoting further exchange of visits.

“We encourage you to use Kurdistan as a gateway for the rest of the Iraqi market and as a platform to increasing business and trade”.

The Head of KRG Department of Foreign Relations, Minister Falah Mustafa participated in the meeting with the Prime Minister and held a separate meeting with the visiting ambassador. Commenting on their plans for a consulate in Erbil, he said: “We currently host four of the five permanent Security Council members, and we have always encouraged others to take advantage of the safety and stability of our region. A Chinese consulate will pave the way for direct communication with our authorities and allow China to truly understand the rich investment opportunities that our region has to offer”.

During his visit, Ambassador Jian also met with the KRG Minister of Interior, Mr Karim Sinjari.

Not a supermajor though in the international oil companies.

World's oil and gas supermajors are:

BP, Chevron Corporation, ExxonMobil Corporation, Royal Dutch Shell and Total S.A., with ConocoPhillips Company also sometimes described as forming part of the group.

As a group, the supermajors control around 6% of global oil and gas reserves. Conversely, 88% of global oil and gas reserves are controlled by the OPEC cartel and state-owned oil companies, primarily located in the Middle East. A trend of increasing influence of the OPEC cartel, state-owned oil companies in emerging-market economies is shown and the Financial Times has used the label "The New Seven Sisters" to describe a group of what it argues are the most influential national oil and gas companies based in countries outside of the OECD, namely CNPC (China), Gazprom (Russia), Petrobras (Brazil), PDVSA (Venezuela), Petronas (Malaysia), Saudi Aramco (Saudi Arabia).

President Barzani Discusses Iraq and Regional Issues with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Jones

Image

04/09/2012

(KRP.org) - Salahaddin, Kurdistan Region – President Barzani today welcomed U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Ambassador Elizabeth Jones for talks on bilateral relations, the political process in Iraq, and challenges facing the region in general.

Ambassador Jones, who has been engaged in talks in Baghdad for the last two days, said the United States remains committed to supporting both Iraq and the KRG within the bounds of the Strategic Framework Agreement signed in 2008 between Iraq and the United States.

On the political disagreements between Baghdad and Erbil, Ambassador Jones said that the United States believes that the resolution of these disagreements coupled with the introduction of reforms by the Iraqi government is important for the whole country and will help Iraq becoming a stronger participant in the region.

President Barzani said the KRG is prepared for engagement with Baghdad to address these outstanding issues but that there needs to be practical steps taken to demonstrate good will, and not just statements. In particular, he said that practical steps need to be taken on urgent issues such as the passing of hydrocarbons legislation, the holding of a long-overdue census, and implementation of Artice-140 of the Constitution, as demanded by the Constitution and per agreements between the KRG and Baghdad.

The President and the Ambassador also talked about developments in Syria, particularly the impact on Iraq and the KRG, and the humanitarian plight of Syrian refugees in Kurdistan.
