Erbil, Oct. 31 (AKnews) - Lawmakers and military officials discussed the future of the Kurdish Army, or peshmarga, at a congress of the Kurdish Ministry of Peshmarga in Erbil.
Anwar Haji Othman, deputy minister of peshmarga, said the aim is to organize peshmarga forces in a united, disciplined army.
"There are not only peshmarga forces under command of the ministry, but also lots of other so-called peshmarga forces under the control of political parties," Othman said.
Qaraman Kamal, drills director at the ministry, pointed out that peshmarga still lack could training and instructions.
"We don't have good facilities, we lack instructors and we don't have the space to conduct proper exercises and maneuvers," Kamal said.
Peshmarga Minister Sheik Jaafar Mustafa, Peshmarga Chief of Staff and the representative of the U.S. forces attend the three-day symposium, the first of its kind, in the Kurdistan Region's capital of Erbil.
100 officers of the ministry participate in the congress whose recommendations will be directed to the Kurdistan regional Government (KRG) for consideration and implementation.
