Top Kurdish Political Terms for Non-Kurds (abbreviations)

Sometimes we kurds use lots of terms and abberviations that might be confusing for a Non-kurd reader of Roj Bash , This topic is dedicated to collect all the terms and abbreviations that we kurds use and a non-kurd might be confused while reading kurdish contexts.

please post your term so i add it to the list, to make it read better please use Large Font size for the Term and normal font size for the definition .

Northern Kurdistan : or NK : Turkish Kurdistan, Turkish occupied Kurdistan, South East Turkey
Southern Kurdistan : or SK : Iraqi Kurdistan, Iraqi occupied Kurdistan, Northern Iraq
Eastern Kurdistan : or EK : Also Iranian Kurdistan, Iranian Occupied Kurdistan, Western Iran
Western Kurdistan : or WK : Syrian Kurdistan, Syrian occupied Kurdistan, North and East Syria

KRG : referring to Kurdistan Regional Government (in Southern Kurdistan see above)
Peshmerga : KRG's defence force or could be reffered to any Kurdish freedom fighters anywhere .

KDP or PDK : Kurdistan Democratic Party (of Iraq) or in Kurdish Party Democrati Kurdistan [lead by Barzani]
PKK : Kurdistan's workers party or in Kurdish Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan [Founded by Abdullah Öcalan]
KDPI or PDKI : Kurdistan Democratic Party (of Iran)
PUK : Patriot union of Kurdistan [lead by Jalal Talibani]
PYD : Democratic Union Party - in Kurdish Partiya Yekîtiya Demokrat. . in Arabic: حزب الاتحاد الديمقراطي [a party in Western Kurdistan]
KNC: Kurdish National Council (Syrian Kurds}
not to be confused with
KNC: Kurdistan National Congress (Freedom and Independence For Kurdistan - Azadî u Serxwebûn bo Kurdistan)
YPG: Popular Protection Units (Syrian Kurds)
KDP-S: Kurdish Democratic Party of Syria
PDPK-S: Kurdish Democratic Progressive Party of Syria
KCK: Union of Communities in Kurdestan

Bakur : (reffering to Northern Kurdistan see above)
Bashur : (reffering to Southern Kurdistan)
Rojhelat : (reffering to Eastern Kurdistan)
Rojava : (reffering To Western Kurdistan)


RBK (short for Roj Bash Kurdistan this website's name)

Mam Jalal : Refers to Jalal Talebani
Apo : Refers to Abdullah Öcalan
Kak Masoud : Refers to Massoud Barzani

Dolma : a famous Kurdish food

YOU have to make sure that all the non-Kurds here know what NK, SK, EK, WK stand for =))

A few more abbreviations for the non-Kurdish
It must be very difficult to keep track of all these parties

KNC: Kurdish National Council (Syrian Kurds}

not to be confused with

KNC: Kurdistan National Congress (Freedom and Independence For Kurdistan - Azadî u Serxwebûn bo Kurdistan)

YPG: Popular Protection Units (Syrian Kurds)

KDP-S: Kurdish Democratic Party of Syria

PDPK-S: Kurdish Democratic Progressive Party of Syria

KCK: Union of Communities in Kurdestan


Kurdish Azadi Party - do not know of any abbrevations - think they might have gone underground
