I took the road from Kirkuk to Erbil last december. sadly it wasn't very good quality! the turkish contractor was a rip-off IMHO. The road obviously wasn't made with reinforced concrete foundations, just asphalt on compacted earth. In Iraq they are doing the new roads in a similar "cheap" fashion sadly. they look good for the "opening ceremonies" and within a couple of years they start cracking and having dips.

I would hire only German companies to build the highways IMHO.

the roads inside Erbil on the other hand were pretty good and obviously reinforced. SO it seems just this dodgy contractor on the erbil-kirkuk section was really bad.
