Best Western has signed its first hotel in KRG in the city of Erbil. The new Best Western Premier hotel is intended to serve demand from the region’s oil and gas industries. Construction will start in September this year, with opening scheduled for Q1 2014. The 18-storey property will open with 160 rooms, but the design of the building is such that there is scope to add a further five stories and 48 rooms in a rooftop extension. Speaking exclusively to Travel Daily, the head of Golden Mountains Company’s Board of Directors, Eng. Handren Azzo, said that the Kurdistan region was leading Iraq’s development. “The city has been named as the third most attractive city in the Middle East for investment, after Doha and Riyadh… and we now have direct flights with airlines like Lufthansa, Emirates, Etihad and Turkish Airlines. The new hotel will be an iconic building in the city,” he said. Glenn de Souza, VP of international operations for Asia & the Middle East at Best Western said the company intends to launch two further properties in Kurdistan Iraq, in the cities of Dohuk and Sulaymaniyah.
