The Iraq Council of Ministers (ICM) issued their permission to build a civilian airport in Kirkuk. The governor of Kirkuk formed a committee to create a plan which is due to go into effect starting from January 8.
Ali Hamadi, a representative of the Kirkuk governor for Technical Affairs said, “Early this week, the ICM ordered that a civilian airport be built at the same location of the old airport.” He added, “For this reason, the Kirkuk governor has formed a committee which starts working from next week to implement the project as soon as possible.”
The committee consists of the Municipality of Kirkuk, Property, Ownership, Environment and Planning Directorate members. Hamadi said the location ‘has no problems’ and the ICM agreed on the location.
Kirkuk Airport was built in 1957 as an international airport. At that time, the airport was only used by mainly British airplanes. In times of the Baath regime, the airport was used for local flights. After 2003, the airport was used as a military base for the U.S. troops called Forward Operating Base Warrior. After the U.S. withdrawal, the Iraqi army was urged to control the airport which resulted in some temporary tension between the Kirkuk police and the army who had control of the airport at that time.
After the tension was appeased, Iraqi PM Nuri Maliki promised Kirkuk governor Nejmadin that he would grant permission to change it to a civilian airport.
