05/02/2012 15:13ERBIL, Feb. 5 (AKnews) - Japan's emerging political and economic interest in the Kurdistan was on show in Erbil yesterday as embassy delegates toured the region.
Tomofumi NishinagaRepresentatives from the Embassy of Japan, based in Baghdad, visited the offices of Aras Publishing and AKnews yesterday, and assured Kurdistan of it's desire to help promote its economy and prospects.
Speaking at our offices, Minister-Counselor Tomofumi Nishinaga said: "We have always been paying attention to Kurdistan and we are doing what we can."
"The security situation is much better here than in other parts of Iraq. For example, we have 4 Japanese experts advising the Ministry of Agriculture in Erbil. This is something we can't do elsewhere in Iraq."
Nishinaga also highlighted a number of Japanese companies, such as Sumitomo and Mistibushu who have recently opened branches in Iraq, which are actively exploring their options in the country and possibly within Kurdistan.
"In the Japanese business model, companies first come to explore how promising the market is. Then they send that information to manufacturers in Japan and help connect and facilitate Japanese companies coming to that country," explained Nishinaga.
Nishinaga said that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's visit in Japan last November created a huge interest from companies to come over to the country.
"They need political stability, of course, as well as stability in the security situation," he said. "We have been sending this message to the Iraqi leadership."
Regarding an Japanese embassy in Kurdistan, First Secretary Junichi Sumi, who is accompanying the Minister-Counselor, said: "Whenever the size of Japanese nationals and companies reached a reasonable level, Japan will open its consulate."
While Nishinaga admitted that some companies may be deterred by Kurdistan's location within the Axis he added that there was hope and would help assure companies of Kurdistan's investment potential.
"It is important to make make economic advantages to be known to Japanese companies and I think this we can do together," he added
The delegates will meet with the Foreign Minister today to further discuss the political situation in Iraq.
