Kirkuk Airport

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Wed May 30, 2012 9:10 am

Kirkuk Airbase is located in northern Iraq approximately 240 kilometers north of Baghdad on the west side of the city of Kirkuk. It is located 1.6 km west of Kirkuk. The airfield is served by 2 main runways measuring 9,700 and 8,400 feet. It had one 2,800 meters asphalt and one 2,325 meters graded earth runway and one 2,900 m runway under construction by 1991. According to the "Gulf War Air Power Survey", Kirkuk Air Base had 24 hardened aircraft shelters. At the each end of the main runway were hardened aircraft shelters knowns as "trapezoids" or "Yugos" which were build by Yugoslavian contractors some time prior to 1985. Kirkuk Airbase occupied a 9 square kilometer site and was protected by 12 kilometers of security perimeter.

Prior to 2003, the facility was a major Iraqi Air Force base with support facilities for at least 2 fighter squadrons. It was strategically located near the Kirkuk oil fields and the Kirkuk refinery and petrochemical plant. Kirkuk Air Base was said to be home to a Sector Operations Center and an Intercept Operations Center.

After the US invasion in 2003, the facility became home to a US Air Force airbase (referred to informally at least initially as "Krabtown") and Army logisitcal hub (FOB Warrior). As of April 2005, there were about 1,000 U.S. Air Force and 2,500 Army personnel stationed at Kirkuk. Another 1,500 people, mostly non-Iraqis, were employed at the base.

Kirkuk air base will be changed to a civilian facility and work has began on the airbase with the rendering company , press secretary for Kirkuk governor said.

The air base will be turned to a civilian airport starting from this week after it is provided with necessary equipments and staff.
Samad added Kirkuk governor has also contacted Transportation Ministry to enforce the necessary procedures for the airport.

Halabja air base: protecting whom

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Wed May 30, 2012 9:15 am

The US is currently constructing a mammoth air base near Halabja, Kurdistan, just 9 miles from the Iranian border.

The base cannot serve to protect Kurdistan against Iran, which can easily move SAM batteries to the border to target Kurdish planes during take-off, when their defensive capabilities are minimal. At such a short distance, Iran can always destroy the air base without allowing the American missile interceptors time to react.

It seems that the base is meant to protect Kurdistan against Shiite Iraq. That would conform to Obama’s plan to break up Libya with the intent of controlling the oil-rich zone.

Kerkuk Airport is ready

PostAuthor: alan131210 » Thu Jun 07, 2012 2:06 pm

One of the Kirkuk governor’s assistants has said that Kirkuk Airport is ready to accept flights, as everything is finished but the service section of the facility.

Ali Hamadi, an assistant of the Kirkuk governor said, “The airport is ready, but no civilian aircraft should fly until the service section is finished.” The Kirkuk administration is in discussions with some companies to implement the service section as soon as possible.

A transportation ministry envoy along with Civic Aviation have visited the airport, and said that “We are waiting for a technical report before asking for both a local and an international license.”

Prior to 2003, Kirkuk Airport was being used as a military base by the US forces. After their withdrawal at the end of 2011, the Kirkuk Provincial Council and the Council of Ministers decided to change the airport to an international airport.

The airport is built on 7,000 acres of land. Currently the Emergency Police is responsible for the security of the airport.
