Zakho Club Launches Training Camp

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Zakho Football Club has begun a five-day training camp in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, as part of its preparations for the upcoming Iraq Stars League season

The camp, which opened this week, forms the first stage of Zakho’s pre-season program before the team departs for Turkey at the end of August to continue training and play additional friendly matches.

The camp follows a period of squad reshuffling, during which Zakho finalized the transfer of several new players and appointed a new head coach.

Team supervisor Hamid Ismail told Kurdistan24 that the Erbil camp is scheduled to run until August 31, after which the squad will travel to Turkey to play several preparatory fixtures.

“This camp is essential to maintain the momentum of our preparations,” Ismail explained. “The Turkish leg will allow the team to test its new signings in international friendlies before the league begins.”

New signing Sherko Karim spoke to Kurdistan24 about the team’s morale, stressing that recent visits from international football figures, including Graham Arnold, had boosted motivation among the squad.

“During Arnold’s visit to our training facilities in Zakho, he spoke with many of the players. His guidance left a strong impression, and we feel more determined to prove ourselves this season,” Karim said.

As part of its pre-season buildup, Zakho is set to play a friendly match on Thursday, August 28, 2025, against Karkh Club at Erbil’s Brayati Stadium. The match will test the tactical adjustments introduced by the new coach and provide an early preview of the team’s form ahead of the competitive season.

The Iraq Stars League, formerly known as the Iraqi Premier League, represents the highest level of football in Iraq, contested by 20 professional clubs under the governance of the Iraqi Pro League Association.

Formed in 1974 as the first national league of clubs in Iraq, the competition was rebranded in 2023 as the Iraq Stars League, transitioning fully into a professional format. Each season sees the 20 clubs play 38 matches (home and away), totaling 380 fixtures.

In June 2023, the Iraq Football Association (IFA) signed a three-year partnership with Spain’s LaLiga to professionalize Iraqi football. Under this agreement, LaLiga provides technical assistance, management training, and development strategies, ensuring that the league meets Asian Football Confederation (AFC) licensing standards.

The rebranded Stars League officially launched on October 26, 2023, and is regarded as a turning point in modernizing Iraqi football, with the long-term aim of aligning domestic competition with international professional standards.

For Zakho, the Erbil camp and subsequent Turkish tour are pivotal steps in preparing for the new season under the Stars League’s evolving structure. With a refreshed squad, international exposure, and enhanced professional standards, the club aims to strengthen its competitive standing in one of the region’s most dynamic football competitions.

FIFA Recognizes Zakho SC Fans
for Humanitarian Initiative

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has recognized the supporters of Zakho Sports Club for their remarkable humanitarian initiative, placing them among three global nominees celebrated for their exceptional contributions to the spirit of football and humanity

Zakho SC fans earned this recognition after displaying a heartwarming gesture during an Iraq Premier League match against Al Hedood at Zakho International Stadium, when they threw teddy bears onto the pitch in support of children battling cancer.

The act quickly captured attention both inside and outside Iraq, highlighting the emotional bond between the club’s supporters and their community.

The recognition is a source of pride for Zakho and all of Kurdistan

“The presence of our club and its supporters in both domestic and international tournaments has become a powerful and attractive gateway for drawing global media and viewership,” the club said in a statement. “This, in turn, serves as a strong catalyst for the advancement of our stadiums and for progress across multiple dimensions.”

The club’s statement also emphasized that Zakho fans have consistently extended their passion for football beyond the stands, engaging in humanitarian, cultural, historical, and artistic activities that reflect the values of solidarity and compassion.

“The selection of our supporters by FIFA demonstrates that true work in the service of humanity is being accomplished,” the statement continued. “This recognition will provide stronger impetus for achieving even greater endeavors within the humanitarian framework in the future.”

Zakho SC expressed deep gratitude to its vast fanbase, describing them as the “heart and soul” of the club and reaffirming its commitment to promoting the values of humanity through sport.

The FIFA recognition also featured two other notable candidates:

    • Alejandro Ciganotto, an Argentine Racing Club supporter, who hitchhiked over 6,500 km to attend all of his team’s away matches during the 2024 Copa Sudamericana, including the final.
    • Manuel Cáceres, the legendary Spanish football fan known as Manolo el del Bombo, who followed La Roja for four decades before his passing in May 2025.
With this distinction, Zakho SC supporters have joined an elite group of global football fans honored for embodying football’s unifying and humanitarian spirit — an achievement that brings both local pride and international recognition to the Kurdistan Region.

Kurds should back Zakho SC in FIFA award

Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani on Sunday urged Kurds worldwide to vote for Zakho SC fans in the International Federation of Association Football’s (FIFA) 2025 Fan Award, after the Duhok-based fanbase was shortlisted for their teddy bear donation drive supporting children with cancer

“With online voting, I supported Zakho Sports Club fans so that they can win the title of first best fans at the world level,” President Barzani said in a statement, calling on “all Kurdistanis, wherever they are” to vote and help them secure the global title.

Fans can vote for their first-, second-, and third-place choices. Voting opened Thursday and runs until December 3, according to FIFA.

The Kurdistan Region President thanked FIFA “for designating Zakho club fans as one of the three candidates.”

FIFA announced in early November that Zakho SC had been named one of the world’s top three fanbases and a finalist for the 2025 Fan Award
The nomination follows a May Iraq Premier League match during which Zakho supporters threw thousands of stuffed teddy bears onto the pitch in a show of solidarity with children battling illness.

Zakho SC thanked President Barzani in a statement, calling his support a “tremendous stance.”

Founded in 1987, Zakho SC is based in the Kurdistan Region’s northern city of Zakho in Duhok province.

The Consulate General of the Netherlands in Erbil also expressed support for the team.

Other nominees for the award include the late Spanish football icon Manuel Caceres, known for decades of drumming in support of Spain’s national team, and Argentine superfan Alejandro Ciganotto, who has walked and hitchhiked thousands of kilometers to follow Racing Club de Avellaneda.

In a show of support, Amedspor, a Kurdish football team based in Turkey’s Diyarbakir (Amed), on Friday wished Zakho fans success. In a post on X, the club urged its supporters to vote for “our Zaxospor brothers and sisters.”

Zakho SC fans have also received backing from sports clubs in northeast Syria (Western Kurdistan).

Sweden-based Kurdish club Dalkurd on Wednesday called for supporting Zakho, writing, “Let’s all show the world the pride, encouragement and passion among Zakho fans.”

Today is the last line in the voting page for Zakho Athletic Club

But it's not the end of the book.

As the curtain falls on this day, the voting door will close, but the doors to achievement, creativity and opportunity manufacturing in Kurdistan will never be closed.

We are a nation of athletes, artists and giant thinkers.

Counting may stop now, but the dream will go on, it doesn't know stopping.
