ANKARA, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Turkey's interior minister said on Sunday two terrorists carried out a bomb attack in front of the ministry buildings in Ankara, adding one of them died in the explosion and the other was "neutralised" by authorities there.

Turkish media earlier reported that an explosion was heard near the parliament and ministerial buildings, and broadcasters showed footage of debris scattered on a street near the Interior Ministry.
Reuters footage showed soldiers, ambulances, fire trucks and an armoured vehicle gathered near the centre of Turkey's capital, where police had blocked several nearby roads.

Ali Yerlikaya, the interior minister, said on social media platform X that two police officers were slightly injured in the incident at 9:30 a.m. (0630 GMT).

"Two terrorists came with a light commercial vehicle in front of the entrance gate of the General Directorate of Security of our Ministry of Internal Affairs and carried out a bomb attack," he said.
He added that one blew himself up and the other was "neutralised", which usually means was killed. "Our struggle will continue until the last terrorist is neutralised," Yerlikaya wrote.

Ankara's chief prosecutor launched an investigation into what it also called a terrorist attack.

Authorities did not identify any specific militant group.

PKK claims responsibility

The Kurdistan Workers' Party says a team from its so-called "Immortal Brigade" carried out the earlier bombing in Ankara

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), listed as a "terror group" by Turkey and its Western allies, claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Sunday that injured two police officers.

"A sacrificial action was carried out against the Turkish Interior Ministry by a team from our Immortal Brigade," the PKK told the ANF news agency, which is close to the party.

Hours after the blast, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said "terrorists" will never achieve their aims.

The powerful explosion outside the Interior Ministry, which was followed by large flames, was heard several kilometers away from the site of the attack.

The targeted district is home to several other ministries and the Turkish parliament, which reopened as planned in the afternoon with an address from Erdogan.

"The villains who threaten the peace and security of citizens have not achieved their objectives and will never achieve them," Erdogan told the parliament.

The Turkish Interior Ministry said two attackers arrived in a commercial vehicle around 9:30 am (0630 GMT) in front of "the entrance gate of the General Directorate of Security of our Ministry of the Interior, and carried out a bomb attack."

"One of the terrorists blew himself up. The other was killed by a bullet to the head before he had a chance to blow himself up," Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya explained in a press statement outside the Ministry.

"Two of our police officers were lightly injured" in the exchange of fire, but their lives were not in danger, he added.

The Ankara police headquarters said on social media platform X that it was carrying out "controlled explosions" of "suspicious packages" to prevent other explosions.

The Ankara prosecutor's office said it was opening an investigation and banned access to the area. Local media were asked to stop broadcasting images from the scene of the attack.

It is noteworthy that the Turkish capital has been the scene of several attacks, particularly during the years 2015 and 2016 -- many claimed by the PKK or ISIS.

In October 2015, an attack in front of a central station in Ankara claimed by ISIS resulted in 109 deaths.

The most recent bomb attack in Turkey targeted a shopping street in Istanbul in November 2022, claiming the lives of six people and injuring 81 others. There was no claim of responsibility, but Turkey accused the PKK of being behind the attack and said it had detained 46 people, including a Syrian woman suspected of planting the device.

I think that "immortal" is the translation of 'nemir' which, in Kurdish, means 'martyr', 'heroic', etc. A classical title for fighters.

In any case, that attack is stupid, but all these obscure groups, like Apo's Hawks, have always been fishy : more a creation of Deep State than a true PKK initiative.

But PKK is 50% or 70% infiltrated by Turkish agents, so…

Offensives against PKK

The head of the Turkish Presidential Communications Directorate deems airstrikes against the PKK in northern Iraq successful

A source in the Turkish presidential administration pointed out that military operations of the Turkish armed forces in northern Iraq and Syria against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) will take on a more active and tough character after the suicide attack in Ankara.

On Sunday, the Turkish Defense Ministry confirmed that its forces carried out airstrikes in northern Iraq and destroyed 20 targets belonging to the PKK following the attack that resulted in the injury of two police officers.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said two terrorists had carried out an explosion near the Ministry building in the Turkish capital, with one terrorist detonating himself and the other killed by a bullet to the head.

The PKK, listed as a "terror group" by Turkey and its Western allies, claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing that injured two police officers.

"Yesterday, speaking in the country’s parliament, Mr. President [Recep Tayyip Erdogan] warned that our fight will continue until the last terrorist and these pathetic attempts [of terrorist attacks] are their last breaths. The military operations of our heroic soldiers will become more active and tough. Turkey will not become a hostage to terrorists," the source told Sputnik.

In the same context, Fahrettin Altun, the head of the Turkish Presidential Communications Directorate, deemed the airstrikes against the PKK in northern Iraq successful.

"The successful overnight air operations carried out by our heroic army against a separatist terrorist organization in northern Iraq have become an important indicator that we will continue to prevent terrorism not only inside our country, but also outside it. Thanks to these operations, the terrorist organization received another strong blow," Altun said on X.

It is noteworthy that in September, Iraqi authorities strongly condemned repeated Turkish aggression on Iraqi soil and violation of Iraqi sovereignty, affirming that they intended to summon the Turkish ambassador after a drone attack claimed the lives of six people, including three Iraqi Kurdish counterterrorism officers at a northern airfield.

Sadly the bomb appears to have been carried by 2 young women

WHY?

I no longer understand what the Turkish Kurds hope to achieve

I understood how Kurdish lands were divided

I understood all the many attacks on Kurds, especially in Turkey and the even worse slaughter of Kurds in Iraq

I understood Kurds being the only nation in the world without a country of their own

I understood their need to fight back as their land was stolen and their people slaughtered

I do not understand why so many of the PKK have moved into Southern Kurdistan turning some parts of the most stable section of Kurdistan into a war zone

I do not understand why the PKK call their fighters freedom fighters while the HDP tell the Kurds that they must no longer fight for freedom, just for a few more rights

I do not understand why the SDF / YPG have gone into Syria and told Syrian Kurds that they must no longer struggle for an Independent Kurdistan, or why they have removed the proud name of Western Kurdistan and now call the area WEST

CONFUSED PLEASE HELP

20 Ankara bomb suspects detained

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on Monday that 20 people were detained during operations against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in various provinces throughout the country

Simultaneous search and seizure operations were launched in Istanbul and Kirklareli in the northwest, while in the southeast, the provinces of Bitlis, Van, Hakkari, and Diyarbakir were also targeted
“We will not forgive any traitor who draws guns on our heroic security forces,” Yerlikaya wrote on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

Infantry rifles, hand grenades, IEDs, gun ammunition, and other military paraphernalia were seized in the search operations, according to the minister.

“The operations we launched against the treacherous terrorist organization will continue,” Yerlikaya added.

Turkish warplanes bombed several PKK positions in the Kurdistan Region on Sunday following the Ankara bomb attack.

Previously on Sunday, the Turkish Interior Ministry announced that an explosion targeted Turkey's Ministry of Interior in the Turkish capital Ankara, resulting in two injuries among security forces.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK has been ongoing since the mid-1980s, with the PKK fighting for greater autonomy for Kurds in Turkey. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of about 55,000 people.

The PKK has been designated as a terrorist organization by the Turkish government, the United States, the European Union, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), among various other countries and entities.

Mass detentions in Istanbul

Turkish police simultaneously stormed several flats in Istanbul and Kırklareli and detained at least 20 people this morning, including executive members of the HDP and HDK

Police raided dozens of homes in Istanbul and Kırklareli simultaneously on Monday morning. At least 20 people were taken into custody, including executive committee members of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and the Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK), as well as other civil society organisations. The detainees were taken to the Istanbul provincial police headquarters.

According to the Turkish Minister of Interior, Ali Yerlikaya, 26 locations were stormed during the course of the operation. While the Turkish judiciary hastily imposed a confidentiality order on the investigation, the detainees will not be allowed to meet their lawyers for 24 hours.

The HDP and Green Left Party organized a demonstration in front of the HDP Istanbul provincial branch office to protest the detentions. The party office and the quarter were besieged by the police and the group was prevented from making a statement to the press.

The crowd was attacked by the police and many people were taken into custody.

The traitorous HDP should be shut down as they openly supported Ataturk

Anti-PKK operation in 18 areas

The Turkish armed forces initiated an operation against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a banned organization in Turkey, across 18 provinces, leading to the detention of 90 individuals

The operation's objective is to identify and eliminate the covert elements of the "terrorist organization", primarily focusing on the group's dormant cells dispersed across 18 provinces. Sanliurfa is one of the provinces included in this operation, as reported by the Turkish daily.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced that an explosion near a ministry building in Ankara was perpetrated by two terrorists, resulting in the injury of two police officers. One of the assailants was identified as a member of the PKK.

Subsequently, on the same day, the Turkish Defense Ministry confirmed that the nation's military carried out airstrikes targeting the PKK in northern Iraq, successfully eliminating 20 designated objectives.

This comes shortly after a source in the Turkish presidential administration pointed out that military operations of the Turkish armed forces in northern Iraq and Syria against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) will take on a more active and tough character after the suicide attack in Ankara.

On Sunday, the Turkish Defense Ministry confirmed that its forces carried out airstrikes in northern Iraq and destroyed 20 targets belonging to the PKK following the attack that resulted in the injury of two police officers.

Guerrillas named

The People's Defense Center (HSM) Headquarters Command issued a statement to confirm the identity of the two guerrillas who carried out the action at the Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs in Ankara on 1 October

The statement said: "We announced that an action was carried out by a team affiliated with our Brigade of Immortals against the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Ankara at 9.30am on 1 October, and that we would share the detailed identity information of our comrades.

Rojhat Zîlan (Özkan Şahin) and Erdal Şahin (Hasan Oğuz) professionally carried out this historic and glorious action. We express our condolences to all our patriotic people of Kurdistan, especially to the valuable families of our comrades Rojhat and Erdal, who shook the colonialist genocidal enemy with their historical heroic actions and left their mark on an era.

We promise that we will remain faithful to the Apoist lifestyle and comradeship of the self-sacrificing martyrs of our Brigade of Immortals, their line of struggle, their self-sacrifice stance, their professionalism, their being a great force of revenge, and their great actions that ordered us to victory, and that we will definitely lead their struggle to victory by making them our struggle guide."

Having read the complete article, I have failed to discover why these 2 men gave up their lives !?!

There was no declaration such as:
We do this for a free Kurdistan
We do this to free Ocalan
Apart form destroying 2 lives, this senseless attack has given Erdogan even more reasons to clamp down on Kurds

Erdogan will gain more international support

As for the chance of removing the PKK for the terrorist list, FORGET IT

112 people detained across Turkey

37 more people were taken into custody in the wake of the action directed against the Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs in Ankara, bringing the total number of detentions in the past three days to 112

Guerrillas carried out an action targeting the Security General Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs near the Parliament in Kızılay, in Ankara on 1 October. The action was carried out on the day when MPs met in parliament for the first time after the summer recess. The sacrificial action was carried out by a team affiliated with the Brigade of the Immortals, according to the People’s Defense Center (HSM) Headquarters Command.

The Turkish police have been conducting detention operations in several cities since the day of the action. The detentions, described as an "anti-terror operation", were justified by the Turkish authorities on the grounds of alleged links of the persons concerned to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) as well as alleged support for the guerrilla action in Ankara.

On 2 October, at least 20 people were taken into custody in two police operations in Istanbul and Kırıklareli, targeting the People's Democratic Congress (HDK) and the People's Democratic Party (HDP). A confidentiality order was imposed on the investigation. Those detained were also prohibited from accessing a lawyer for 24 hours. The detainees are currently held at the Provincial Security Directorate of Istanbul and are expected to give their statements today.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced yesterday (3 October) that 55 people were taken into custody in operations in 16 cities, including Urfa, Mardin, Diyarbakır, Antep, Mersin, Şırnak, Istanbul, Bursa, Batman, Denizli, Adana, Kayseri, Antalya, Konya, Isparta and Kocaeli.

Yerlikaya announced on Wednesday that 37 more people have been taken into custody in 15 cities, including Istanbul, Van, Urfa, Elazığ, Düzce, Diyarbakır, Bursa, Edirne, Kırklareli, Kilis, Iğdır, Hatay, Adana, Maraş and Denizli.

A number of Syrians were reportedly taken into custody during the operation in Adana.

With today’s detentions, the number of those taken into custody has risen to 112.

Turkey’s troubled history with PKK

EXPLAINER

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is in the spotlight after Turkey blamed it for Sunday’s suicide blast in front of the Ministry of Interior in Ankara. Edit: PKK has claimed responsibility and named the 2 men involved

Within hours of the attack, Turkey carried out air raids on northern Iraq, targeting what it said were 20 PKK positions. Ankara has long claimed that the PKK is sheltering across the border in Iraq’s Kurdish province.

The PKK has been designated as a “terrorist organisation” by Ankara and its NATO allies, who condemned Sunday’s attack as “terrorism”.

So, what’s the story behind this attack?
What exactly happened in Ankara?

On Sunday, a car with two men inside pulled up at the Interior Ministry’s gate in the Kizilay neighbourhood of the Turkish capital.

Security camera footage showed the attackers getting out of the car and the person in the passenger seat rushing towards the gate with what appeared to be an assault rifle or rocket launcher before being engulfed in an explosion. Then, the second person started shooting.

Turkish authorities said the first perpetrator was killed when he detonated the bomb on his person, and the second attacker was shot dead. Two police officers were slightly injured.

The attackers are believed to have started their operation in Kayseri, 260km (161 miles) southeast of Ankara where they are suspected of killing a veterinarian and taking his vehicle to avoid arousing suspicion in Ankara, according to local media reports.

The timing of the attack

A statement attributed to the PKK, claiming it was behind the blast, was released by pro-Kurdish news agency ANF

It said a team affiliated with the Kurdish armed group’s “Brigade of Immortals” was behind the attack, which was “an act of legitimate defence” against the Turkish government, which the statement accused of trampling on the rights of the Kurdish people.

The statement carried by ANF went on to say that the timing and placement of the attack was intended to come shortly before the opening of Parliament after the summer recess.

Among other things, the Turkish parliament is expected to discuss ratifying Sweden’s accession to NATO soon. NATO member Turkey has demanded that Sweden crack down on “Kurdish separatists” in its territory as a condition for its ratification.

The statement claimed the attack was successful and achieved its goal, even though the perpetrators failed to pass the ministry’s gate.

The fact that the attack took place at about 9:30am (06:30 GMT) on a Sunday when streets were nearly empty hints civilians might not have been the targets.

What has the investigation found out about the suicide bombing?

So far, Turkish intelligence and security apparatuses have been staging raids across the country.

After raiding 28 addresses, they have arrested 20 individuals with links to the suicide bombing, including a few politicians from the pro-Kurdish HDP party, according to Al Jazeera’s Sinem Koseoglu reporting from Turkey. The politicians have been accused of fundraising for PKK elements outside the country
In addition, Koseoglu said, Turkish intelligence claims to have “neutralised” the mastermind of a 2007 attack in Daglica that killed 12 Turkish soldiers.

Muzdelif Taskin was “neutralised” in northern Syria, in the city of Qamishli, Turkish news agency Anadolu said.

Why does Turkey want to stamp out the PKK?

The PKK is designated a “terrorist organisation” by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.

Initially taking up arms against the Turkish state in 1984, the PKK has waged a rebellion that resulted in the death of tens of thousands of people.

Its stated goal is the creation of an independent socialist Kurdish state in the territory of “Kurdistan” in southeast Turkey.

The PKK and its offshoots have carried out numerous attacks on military and security forces as well as civilians in Turkey.

Turkey regularly conducts military operations in southeastern parts of the country with the aim of forcing the PKK out. It has also cracked down on Kurdish politicians, journalists and activists in the country.

Ankara has also been regularly targeting PKK positions in northern Iraq (Southern Kurdistan), drawing anger from Baghdad, which accuses Turkey of violating its sovereignty.

Turkish strikes against Kurds

Turkey's latest air campaign in Syria raises tensions with Washington over US-backed militias, Oilfield destroyed in northern Syria after Turkish strike

Turkish air and drone attacks in northern Syria have hit "30 militant targets", Meaning over 30 Kurdish targets Turkey’s Defence Ministry said on Friday, as part of a wave of retaliation bombings against Kurdish militias.

Turkey admitted to bombing energy infrastructure in Kurdish-administered parts of Syria, including “an oil well, a storage facility and shelters".

It said it had neutralised many militants, adding that strikes were conducted in the Tal Rifaat, Cizire and Derik regions of northern Syria. Activists say Turkish jets also struck electricity infrastructure and a brick factory.

Later on Friday, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said it had killed five Turkish troops in operations waged in response to drone attacks on areas under its control.

But a Turkish defence ministry official denied the claims.

The air strikes follow an attack outside the Turkish parliament on Sunday that sent shockwaves through the political establishment and led to a mass arrest of about 1,000 suspected Kurdish separatists.

A website linked to the militant group Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, said the attack was “a sacrificial action … carried out against the Turkish Interior Ministry by a team from our Immortal Brigade”.
In the past, Turkey has bombed Syrian Kurdish militias after Kurdish attacks in Turkey. The Syrian Democratic Forces, an umbrella organisation of militias led by the Kurdish Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara considers a terrorist organisation, has borne the brunt of these attacks.

It was backed by the US and other western powers at the height of the war against ISIS, and some US forces are co-located with the militia. A US jet shot down a Turkish drone near a US-Kurdish position on Thursday, with the Pentagon saying the unmanned aircraft had flown too close to US troops.

The offensive by Turkish fighter jets came several hours after similar drone strikes by the country’s National Intelligence Agency in Syria’s north-east in retaliation for the suicide-bomb attack by Kurdish militants from Syria in the Turkish capital over the weekend, the government said.

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin called for de-escalation in northern Syria in a phone call with his Turkish counterpart while acknowledging Turkey’s “legitimate security concerns”, the Pentagon said in a statement. He affirmed a commitment to close co-ordination between the allies to prevent any risk to US forces who are in north-east Syria.

Turkey has long asked Washington to stop arming and training YPG militants while the US warned Turkey against unilateral air strikes that could threaten American personnel. For Turkey, Washington’s support for Kurdish militants in Syria remains a sore point.

Kurdish groups retain control over large areas in Syria’s north-east while Syrian President Bashar Al Assad’s Damascus-based government has largely consolidated its rule elsewhere in the country with the help of Russia and Iran.

“Aerial operations were aimed at eliminating the terrorist threat emanating from northern Syria,” the Turkish Defence Ministry said, adding the air strike targeted the north-western Syrian town of Tal Rifat, from where Kurdish YPG forces have staged hit-and-run attacks on Turkish troops and allied Syrian rebels.

Turkish army renews attacks on SDF

The SDF retaliated with an airstrike on a Turkish military base in northwest Syria, killing a Turkish officer and injuring seven others

The Turkish military launched airstrikes today targeting areas under the control of the SDF in the Al-Hasakah province of northeast Syria.

The strikes targeted vital infrastructure and installations located just kilometers away from major US occupation bases in both Al-Malikiyah and Al-Rmeilan.

Turkish drones repeatedly targeted the Rmeilan Oil Facility, causing significant material damage to the site. A source from the al-Hasakah Electricity Company told Al Mayadeen that the "Turkish occupations' airstrike on the electricity generation station in Rmeilan has rendered it inoperative," highlighting that "this facility plays a critical role in providing electricity to many areas within the province."

Turkish drones also bombed a health center on the outskirts of Al-Malikiyah, situated in the far northeast of the Al-Hasakah province, leveling it to the ground.

According to Al Mayadeen sources, Turkish artillery and drones attacked 52 targets within SDF-controlled areas, with a particular focus on the Al-Hasakah province over the past two days.

The sources also reported that attacks targeted 19 infrastructure sites, 22 civilian locations, and 11 military sites, specifying that "12 sites were hit in al-Hasakah, 19 in Al-Qamishli, and 14 in the northern Aleppo countryside".

The strikes also led to the outage of five power generation stations and facilities, including the Rmeilan Generation Station, the Al-Qamishli Electricity Conversion Station, Amoda, the Western Al-Hasakah Dam, and the Tel Ahmad Electricity Conversion Station.

Additionally, several oil stations and wells, such as Al-Zarbah, Al-Ouda, Al-Saeeda, Al-Qaws, Al-Allyan, and Maashuq, were affected in the rural areas of Al-Qahtaniyah, Al-Jawadiyah, and Al-Rmeilan.

In response to these developments, the Turkish Ministry of Defense reported that "the rocket attack on a Turkish base by the SDF" resulted in the death of a Turkish police officer and injuries to seven officers and soldiers in the village of Dabiq, northwest Syria, on Thursday evening.

The ministry further stated that "Turkey conducted separate airstrikes, destroying 30 terrorist targets in other locations in northern Syria, including an oil well, a storage facility, and shelters."
