Turkey: explosions at Istanbul football stadium cause multiple casualties

Turkish authorities have reported that a major soccer stadium in Istanbul was hit by at least two explosions on Saturday night, in which around 20 police were wounded.

Witnesses said more police were deployed and had cordoned off the area as smoke rose from the newly built Besiktas Stadium. They said gunfire had also been heard in what appeared to have been an armed attack on police. The private NTV channel said the target of the attack was a bus containing riot police.

Turkey’s interior minister, Suleyman Soylu, gave the casualty toll and said the wounded were police officers. “It is thought to be a car bomb at a point where our special forces police were located, right after the match at the exit where Bursaspor fans exited, after the fans had left,” he said.

“We have no information on the number of dead. God willing, we hope there won’t be any. The wounded are police.”

Images broadcast on television showed more than a dozen ambulances on a street hugging the stadium and a police helicopter flying overhead with its search lights on.

Prime minister Binali Yildirim and Istanbul governor Vasip Sahin had been notified, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency said.

Turkish soccer team Bursaspor said none of its fans appeared to have been injured in the explosion.

“We have contacted our fan groups. There appear to be no injuries among our fans. We wish injured citizens a quick recovery,” Bursaspor said in a statement on its Twitter account.

Many police injured in Istanbul Besiktas stadium blasts

At least 20 police officers have been injured in explosions near a football stadium in Istanbul, Turkey's interior minister says.

Suleyman Soylu said it was thought a car bomb had specifically targeted riot police.

Ambulances and police were seen rushing to the scene, and TV footage showed a fire burning outside the stadium.

Turkey has seen a recent spate of militant attacks in major cities that have left dozens of people dead.

The blast on Saturday happened two hours after a football match at the Vodafone Arena between Besiktas and Bursaspor, two of Turkey's top teams, ended.

Local media reported that fans had already dispersed. Bursaspor posted on Twitter that none of its fan groups knew of any injured fans.

Mr Soylu said: "It is thought to be a car bomb at a point where our special forces police were located, right after the match at the exit where Bursaspor fans exited, after the fans had left.

"We have no information on the number of dead. God willing we hope there won't be any."

Terrorists injure more than 20 as they launch machine gun and twin bomb attack on Turkish riot police outside major Istanbul football match

The car bomb was said to have targeted a riot police bus outside the stadium
The blast came after Besiktas' 2-1 win at home against Bursaspor
Riot police officers are believed to be among those injured

A suspected car bomb has rocked the streets near Istanbul's Besiktas sports stadium, Turkish media and witnesses say.

The sound of an explosion was heard on the European side of the city this evening.

The car bomb was said to have targeted a riot police bus stationed near the stadium of Istanbul's Besiktas football club.

The blast in central Istanbul wounded at least 20 people after the end of a match between two of Turkey's top teams, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said.

Riot police officers are believed to be among the injured.

The explosion was heard after Besiktas' 2-1 win at home against Bursaspor tonight.

TV footage showed what appeared to be the wreckage of a burned out car and two separate fires on the road outside the stadium.

Witnesses said gunfire could be heard in what appeared to have been an armed attack on police.

Following the attack, armed police sealed off streets around the newly-built Vodafone Arena, home to the Besiktas football team.

Witnesses said police were deployed and had cordoned off the area as smoke rose from the stadium.

'It is thought to be a car bomb at a point where our special forces police were located, right after the match at the exit where Bursaspor fans exited, after the fans had left.' Soylu was quoted as saying by Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency.

'We have no information on the number of dead. God willing we hope there won't be any. The wounded are police.'

Images broadcast on television showed more than a dozen ambulances on a street hugging the stadium and a police helicopter flying overhead with its search lights on.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin had been notified, the agency said.

'I heard two explosions, two sounds and now sirens of ambulances rushing to the scene,' an AFP correspondent in the city said.

Turkey has experienced a bloody year of militant attacks in its two biggest cities that have left dozens dead and put the country on high alert.

Kurdish militants have twice struck in Ankara, while suspected Islamic State group suicide bombers have hit Istanbul on three occasions.

Istanbul Besiktas: Stadium blasts kill at least 13 people

Two explosions near a football stadium in Istanbul, Turkey, have killed at least 13 people and injured many others, reports say.

Turkish officials said the blasts, believed to be a car bomb and a suicide bomb, had targeted police officers.

Witnesses heard gunfire after the attack, which happened two hours after fans had left the Besiktas stadium.

Turkey has seen a recent spate of militant attacks in major cities that have left dozens of people dead.

No group has said it was behind the attack but a wave of bombings in Turkey this year has been carried out by Kurdish militants and so-called Islamic State (ISIS), the BBC's Turkey correspondent, Mark Lowen, reports.

The fact that police appear to have been hit will focus suspicion on Kurdish guerrilla groups, who have mainly targeted the security forces, he adds.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed fatalities but gave no details.

"A terrorist attack has been carried out against our security forces and our citizens," he said.

"It has been understood that the explosions after the Besiktas-Bursaspor football game aimed to maximise casualties. As a result of these attacks unfortunately we have martyrs and wounded."

Thank you for the CNN link :ymapplause:

I see that it has recently been updated

Ten suspects have been detained in connection with the blasts, Soylu said at the conference.

No group has claimed responsibility for the twin bombings but ISIS and the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have staged attacks in Turkey over the past year

If, as the report says, Ten suspects have been detained - then surely they must know who is actually responsible :-?

Perhaps the Turkish government will blame these attacks on the Kurds and use these attacks to justify further curfews and attacks in the Kurdish area X(

Turkey vows 'vengeance' after deadly explosions in Istanbul

Turkey has vowed vengeance for the victims of twin blasts outside a football stadium in Istanbul that killed 38 people and injured more than 150.

Turkish officials have said Kurdish militants may be responsible for the two bombs, which appeared to be a co-ordinated attack on police.

"Sooner or later, we will have our vengeance," said interior minister Suleyman Soylu, speaking at a funeral service at Istanbul police headquarters.

"This blood will not be left on the ground, no matter what the price, what the cost."

President Tayyip Erdogan called the attack on Saturday night "the ugly face of terror".

In the first explosion, a car bomb was blown up outside the Vodafone Arena, home to the club Besiktas, after a football match. Less than a minute later, a suicide bomber hit in an adjacent park.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but deputy prime minister Numan Kurtulmus said early indications pointed to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK.

"The arrows point at the PKK," he told CNN Turk.

Thirteen people have been arrested.

Most of the victims - 30 - were police officers, seven were civilians and one was yet to be identified, officials said.

Another 166 were injured, and 136 people remained in hospital, including 14 under intensive care.

Authorities have determined that about 300-400kg of explosives were used in the powerful blasts.

The number of civilians killed was lower than feared as fans had already left the stadium after the game when the blasts occurred.

The first explosion struck in an area where police special forces were located at the stadium exit. A riot police bus appears to have been the target, said Mr Soylu.

The suicide bomber triggered the explosive after being stopped by police in the nearby Macka Park.

Witnesses have described scenes of panic as the explosions rocked the area and shattered windows.

"It was like hell. The flames went all the way up to the sky," said Omer Yilmaz, who works as a cleaner at the nearby Dolmabahce Mosque, directly across the road from the stadium.

"People ducked under the tables, women began crying. Football fans drinking tea at the cafe sought shelter, it was horrible."

Sunday was a day of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast across the nation and officials calling for a march against terrorism.

Mr Erdogan, who cancelled a planned trip to Kazakhstan, described the blasts as a terrorist attack on police and civilians. He said the aim of the bombings, two hours after the end of a match attended by thousands of people, had been to cause maximum casualties.

"We have once again witnessed tonight in Istanbul the ugly face of terror, which tramples on every value and decency," he said.

"Nobody should doubt that with God's will, we as a country and a nation will overcome terror, terrorist organisations."

This year Istanbul has witnessed a spate of attacks attributed by authorities to the Islamic State group or claimed by Kurdish militants.

A state of emergency is in force following a failed coup attempt on 15 July.

'کوررە ئەوە هەر کەرەکەي جارانە، تەنها کورتانەکەي گۆرايە'=‌ He is the same Jack Ass, except his saddle has been changed.

This was Kurdish proverb about people don't learn from life. After almost 40 years of war, retarded Turks still talk only to go to war.

[Does the PKK or TAK claim it is their deed ? or ISIS ?

Each time something explodes in Turkey, even a gas bottle, government says it is PKK]

Ok, TAK claim the slaughter as their own action. That group seems to be a puppet in Turkish services since the beginning.

If PKK doesn't criticize the action they are not better. That is just the stupid thing to do. The place is not even an AKP stronghold. It will just give more power to Erdogan. That's the right time if he wants to change the constitution.

There is no doubt that the Turkish government will use this attack as an excuse to increase the military occupation of North Kurdistan X(

And enable Erdogan to push through his planned changes to the constitution making himself GOD X(

This attack rather conveniently comes at a time when several countries are starting to ask questions about Turkey's treatment of Kurds in the Eastern part of Turkey :-?

Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (Teyrêbazên Azadiya Kurdistan;TAK) has claimed responsibility for the twin blasts that hit police forces in Istanbul city last night.

The statement by TAK said:

“The simultaneous action in Istanbul Vodafone Arena Stadium and Maçka was conducted by our Team Martyr Tirej at 22:30 on 10 December, 2015. Two comrades of ours bravely fell martyr as a result of this action which left some 100 police dead and hundreds of others wounded.” The statement noted that ID details of these TAK militants will be announced in the coming days.

TAK continued, stressing that: “The Turkish people are not a direct target of TAK. Our Team Martyr Tirej carried out this action with utmost attention.

However, no comfortable life should be expected in Turkey while the imprisonment of Leader Apo continues, the Turkish-AKP fascism tortures mothers, exposes the bodies of young girls and massacres children in Kurdistan on daily basis.

The peoples of Turkey should say stop to this fascism because only the AKP fascism is responsible for this chaos.”

TAK ended the statement, vowing that they will be the winning side of this terrifying war.

They are not better than ISIS and all other mad terrorists.

Just notice that they don't care a lot about Kurdistan. Before they called Apo's Falcons. That was more accurate. They want the freedom of Öcalan, that's all.

That is good. If he gets what he wants by constitutional change that will be the start of the so called Turkish Republic destruction. At least the so called Turkish Republic becomes Islamised.

Bakur will be destroyed before Turkey if the war re-start. As in 90s. Kurds in Turkey are mad with such actions. It brings nothing good.

KDP and PUK had never used terrorism against Irak, even during Anfal. And now Kurds from Bashur are very close to have their own state. Partly because no one have could told about them that they were or are terrorists.
