MP says ISIS attack in Turkey’s Diyarbakir aimed to kill Kurdish leader
Reporting by: Wladimir van Wilgenburg

Ziya Pir, a parliament member for the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) on Saturday said that the Diyarbakir bomb attack claimed by ISIS was aimed to kill Kurdish politicians, including popular HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtas.

Pir said that detained HDP MPs, including co-chair Selahattin Demirtas have barely escaped the terror attack in Diyarbakir city, south Turkey. He said that most of the Kurdish politicians who were arrested, were brought to the police station that ISIS attacked.

At least nine people were killed and more than 100 were wounded in an attack that was blamed on the Kurdish PKK movement, but now claimed by the Islamic State in a rare statement.

The attack happened a few hours after pro-Kurdish leaders Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag were detained.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım blamed the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) for the attack. However, ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack through a statement released by the Jihadi Amaq Agency.

The attack follows a call by ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi last Tuesday on his followers to attack Turkey.

According to observers, the goal of the ISIS attack was to put more fuel on the fire in Turkey. In the past, ISIS has carried out attacks in order to disrupt the peace process between the PKK and the Turkish state.

It makes no sense for ISIS to wait until Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag were arrested before they attack them

Both Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag are much easier targets while they are attending the many open meeting they speak at

Turkey says Diyarbakir car bomb work of Kurdish militants, not ISIS

The car bomb that killed 11 people and wounded 100 in the southeast Kurdish province of Diyarbakir on Friday was the work of Kurdish militants and not Islamic State, the local governor's office said.

Following the attack on Friday, Islamic State claimed responsibility for the car bomb, according to the group's Amaq news agency. But the Diyarbakir governor's office said in a statement on Saturday that it was "clear" the bomb was the work of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), citing intercepted communications between PKK militants. If it was ISIS it would have attacked better targets like Istanbul or Ankara. It was a Turkish Government attack to kill Kurdish leaders.

Why would Turkey bother to attack where the HDP leaders are being held - they could found an easier place to attack them

But why would Turkey bother to attack the HDP leaders at all after they have arrested them

Remember what Turkey did to Leyla Zana. She was imprisoned for 10 years for her political activism - which was deemed by the Turkish courts to be against the unity of the country

Selahattin Demirtas has personally openly supported the PKK - a known terrorist organisation - he could be locked up for several years
