Clashes break out between ISIS and al-Qaeda in Damascus

DAMASCUS – Subsequent to clashes with the Nusra Front, Syria’s branch of al-Qaeda, militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) were able Thursday to capture a key post in the Yarmouk Camp south of the Syrian capital Damascus, local sources reported.

The Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk has been under control of the al-Qaeda-affiliate Nusra for months.

Speaking to ARA News in Yarmouk, local rights activist Sarah Mustafa confirmed that ISIS extremists launched Thursday a surprise attack on the Nusra-held checkpoint of al-Oruba on the outskirts of the Yarmouk refugee camp in the Syrian capital Damascus.

“The ISIS-led offensive led to the outbreak of clashes between the two parties, during which light and medium weapons were used,” the source said.

It was not immediately clear how many militants were killed in Thursday’s clashes.

Mustafa confirmed that both parties have received additional reinforcements in the Yarmouk camp in a bid to retake the strategic areas there.

The Hajar al-Aswad is a major chamber for the ISIS’s operations on the eastern Ghouta and the Yarmouk refugee camp, south of Damascus.

The Oruba roadblock is a key position in the Yarmouk refugee camp that is located at the entrance of the neighborhood. It is close to the ISIS-held neighborhood of Hajar al-Aswad. With ISIS control over this strategic military post, the movement of Nusra militants will be restrained in the Yarmouk area, and ISIS could easily launch attacks in the heart of the capital Damascus, according to local activists.

In march 2015, ISIS jihadis overran much of the Yarmouk district, but Palestinian factions that were active in the area at that time were able to expel the group’s jihadis who retreated to the nearby Hajar al-Aswad district.

There is one group of savage jihadists fighting another group of savage jihadists

This is the reason Assad must remain in power

If Assad were to be overthrown there would be a complete and utter bloodbath that would make the current situation in Syria look like a Church/Mosque picnic

Although very little is being written about al Nusra of the Islamic Front, BOTH of these groups are far more savage than the Islamic State

Sometimes I feel that both groups are sitting back and letting all the other groups do most of the fighting for them, conserving their energies ready to fight for complete control when the time is right

I have not mentioned all the many other militant groups in Syria, partly because I do not think that anyone actually knows exactly how many such groups exist and partly because many of the groups change allegiances on a regular basis
