Iraqi Parliament Gives Abadi 30 Days to Implement Cabinet Reshuffling
The Iraqi parliament voted for a cabinet lineup presented by PM Haider al-Abadi on Thursday, giving him 15 to 30 days to implement his package.
On March 31, PM Abadi presented his new cabinet lineup, with the list of the new candidates, to the Iraqi parliament and revealed that his reform package includes shrinking the cabin as well as replacing the current ministers with technocrat figures.
The Iraqi parliament unanimously approved the reform package with giving him not more than one month to implement his project.
Reducing the number of Iraqi ministers from 22 to 18, Abadi’s plan is aiming to replace 16 of them.
The Iraqi PM, however, avoids bringing any change to the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Defence as the country is currently at a war against Islamic State (IS), and replacing these two major ministers may cause further political tensions.
Abadi announced more than six weeks ago that he wanted to replace current ministers with independent technocrats but has faced resistance from rivals who fear it could weaken the political patronage networks that have sustained their wealth and influence for more than a decade, Reuters previously reported.
Powerful Shi'ite Muslim leader Moqtada al-Sadr, who started a sit-in near parliament on Sunday and leads a bloc with three ministers in the current government, is pushing Abadi to appoint nominees unaffiliated with political parties.
He urged the Iraqi lawmakers earlier today to vote for Abadi’s reform package, “otherwise the country will go into a really dangerous period.”
Farhad Qader, a Kurdish Member of the Iraqi Parliament, told BasNews that the do not expect the PM to finalise and implement his plan within the limited time. “Also, I don't think that the project could bring a huge change which could meet the public requirements,” the MP said.
