ISIS now, at less than 100 km from Bagdad. Their statement to Maliki :

Your people could have reigned supreme over Iraq but you made them lose that opportunity. Even the Shia will curse you now. We will settle our differences not in Samarra or Baghdad but in Kerbala, the filth-ridden city, and in Najaf, the city of polytheists.

They threatened Christian women if they don't wear veil, but claim they won't harm Christians if they follow the Shari'a (their own conception of Shari'a).

But Shiites could expect no mercy : being calling polytheists by Jihadists means they are not muslims nor Ahl Al Kitab - dhimmi. Just flesh to slaughter.

The United States Should Reconsider the Kurds BY WLADIMIR VAN WILGENBURG:

The United States has opposed Kurdish ambitions in both in Iraq and Syria for more autonomy, citing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Iraqi and Syrian state. The Kurds have been one of the few genuinely pro-American people in the region and are currently the only force that is able to fight the militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and protect Christians, not Baghdad nor Assad.

They should but they won't do it, at least, not immediately. All Foreign policies are stuck to old habits and old conceptions of the world. They are afraid to move one finger, incase of a general collapse of Middle -Eastern States. But because of their refuse to change, that is precisely happened : all these states collapse, one after one, like a house of cards.

Al Qaeda-inspired militant group vows march on Baghdad after seizing northern cities

Al Qaeda-inspired militants in Iraq vowed Thursday to march against Baghdad after seizing two key cities in the north of the country this week.

A spokesman for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) said in audio posted on militant websites commonly used by the group that the fighters have old scores to settle with Iraq's Shiite-led government.

The spokesman, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, also threatened that Sunni ISIL fighters would capture the southern Iraqi Shiite cities of Karbala and Najaf, which hold two of the holiest shrines for Shiite Muslims.

The Washington Post reported that militants had reached the city of Samarra, approximately 80 miles north of the Iraqi capital, by nightfall Wednesday.

Meanwhile, members of Iraq's parliament were expected to vote Thursday on a request by embattled Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to declare a state of emergency. If lawmakers approve, the prime minister would be granted wider powers in running the country. Legal experts say those could include powers to impose curfews, restrict public movements and censor the media.

The Iraq prime minister has reportedly appealed for a military response from the Obama administration, but the New York Times reported that the White House has so far rebuffed al-Maliki's requests. The Times reports that the White House has been reluctant to reengage in Iraq since withdrawing the last U.S. forces from the country in 2011.

Militants took Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit on Wednesday, as soldiers and security forces abandoned their posts and yielded ground once controlled by U.S. forces.

Only a day earlier, they seized control of much of Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul, sending an estimated half a million people fleeing from their homes. As in Tikrit, the Sunni militants were able to move in after police and military forces melted away following relatively brief clashes.

The group, which has seized wide swaths of territory, aims to create an Islamic emirate spanning both sides of the Iraq-Syria border.

That's not the first time Kurds take Kirkuk. They had been always obliged to withdraw, until now. This time, if they keep it, it is, de facto, independence.

Iraq 'asks US for airstrikes' as al-Qaeda-linked militants vow to march on Baghdad

Al-Qaeda-linked militants who have seized control of large parts of northern Iraq vowed to march on Baghdad on Thursday, amid reports that the Iraqi government had requested US airstrikes to halt their advance.

As the jihadists issued online messages threatening to attack both the Iraqi capital and the Shia holy city of Kerbala further south, Iraqi officials were said to have privately asked Washington for military air power.

Breaking News

Iraq's parliamentary session has been postponed due to lack of quorum. The meeting was intended to vote on the government's call for the state of emergency.

Seems as though some of the Iraqi government has run away from Baghdad

I think you underestimate ISIS and their strategic capacity.

Honestly heval i see no difference between the iraqi army and the ISIS . Given the power and the chance they will do much worst than the ISIS and we all have seen what these animals are capable of doing in halabja and Anfal .

I wonder what Maliki's next move will be , because even the state of emergency that he declared has failed and no agreement have been reached . Actually sunni politicians are all leaving Baghdad according to the latest reports .

The army is done and If Maliki asks for help from Hizb allah or shia milias it will mean a full scale civil war between sunnas and shias which is precisely what ISIS want .

Many are hoping for US help which I believe will never come , because carpet bombing Mosul will never work and will only strengthen the sunnas

is it over for maliki or is there another move ?

Once ISIS go into Baghdad what will anyone be able to do?

Governments could not bomb Mosul or Baghdad because of all the MILLIONS of innocent people living there

No-body would prevent humanitarian aid from entering because it is all the millions of innocent people who will suffer

I believe the reports that ISIS have been telling people in Mosul not to worry and that they will be safe from harm - ISIS are far from stupid they are giving themselves a human shield in Mosul and will do the same in Baghdad X(

Parliament in Baghdad has delayed voting on a request to grant the prime minister emergency powers as the north slips out of government control.

Just 128 out of the 325 MPs turned up for the vote on Nouri Maliki's request.

The earlier report was correct - it now looks as though the government itself are running away from Baghdad :(

It seems that when we heard that ISF has resisted, soldiers were Kurds.

Yesterday, 19 Yezidis soldiers were killed by ISIS which surrounded these 300 Kurdish soldiers from ISF (among them 200 Yezidis), in Anbar province,. They tried to retreat to Shingal. But ISIS cut the way. So they commander Said Heydar called Peshmergas for help. They have no hope of assistance from Iraqi Army.

because it was all preplanned . There is very little soldiers can/want/would do when ordered by their superiors to surrender and not fight .
