Coalition to Withdraw by September 2025
The US-led international mission formed a decade ago to combat the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq will cease operations by September 2025, according to a joint statement issued on Friday by the US and Iraqi federal governments
However, there will be a “transition to bilateral security partnerships in a manner that supports Iraqi forces and maintains pressure on ISIS,” the statement added.
The coalition’s military mission in neighbouring Syria, where ISIS also remains active, “will continue until September 2026,” the statement noted.
Few details were provided regarding the potential withdrawal of US troops from Iraq following the end of the mission.
“I want to emphasize that this is not a withdrawal. This is a transition—from a coalition military mission to an expanded US-Iraqi bilateral security relationship,” a senior US official told reporters during a briefing on Friday.
Currently, the United States has approximately 2,500 military personnel stationed in Iraq and around 900 troops in Syria.
These forces are tasked with combating ISIS militants while also serving as trainers and advisors to local security forces.
