US Revokes Terrorist Label
for Al-Nusrah Front, HTS

The United States has officially revoked the Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) designation of the al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), marking a major policy shift in Washington’s approach to the group operating in northwestern Syria

According to a notice signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and dated June 23, the designation revocation was made in coordination with the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Treasury. The decision is set to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday and takes immediate effect upon publication.

“In consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Treasury, I hereby revoke the designation of al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham [and other aliases], as a Foreign Terrorist Organization,” the statement read.

The al-Nusrah Front was first designated as an FTO in 2012 due to its affiliation with al-Qaeda and its role in Syria’s civil war. However, in recent years, the group has attempted to distance itself from its former jihadist identity, rebranding as HTS and positioning itself as part of the broader Syrian opposition movement.

Despite its rebranding, HTS remains controversial, with many governments and observers questioning the sincerity of its ideological shift. The group maintains control over large parts of Idlib province and has clashed with both regime forces and extremist groups, including remnants of the Islamic State.

HTS has not been removed from other U.S. sanctions programs, such as the Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) list, and remains under scrutiny for human rights abuses and suppression of civil society in areas under its control.

I remember some of the horrendous things HTS did

The PKK were never barbaric

The PKK came into being after the Kurds had been under attack from Turkish occupation forces for more than 50 years

The PKK offered Kurds INDEPENDENCE and the right to live on their traditional homeland, use their own language, sing/dance and wear traditional clothes

PKK should be removed from all the Terrorist Organization lists

And the PKK should be the army of Northern Kurdistan
