Mass Grave Found in School
A mass grave of individuals massacred by the Islamic State (ISIS) has been discovered in a school in Nineveh province, the Iraqi Security Media Cell reported on Thursday
"Through the assistance of citizens, information was received about the presence of bodies in a mass grave in the al-Saad neighborhood of Tal Afar district. The 15th Division and the mass mobilization forces began searching the site and discovered a mass grave that had been previously identified by a citizen while building the foundation of a school,” the statement said.
Initial investigations have indicated that the mass grave contains the bodies of 14 victims, who were buried by ISIS militants. Legal action has been taken, and the bodies will be handed over to the relevant authorities for identification.
"The mass grave was discovered when a bulldozer was digging the foundation of a school," Tal Afar district governor Khalil Mohsen Massa told local media on Wednesday.
"There are children among the victims, but their identities are still unknown. We have informed the governor of Nineveh and the director of the mass graves in the Martyrs Institute. The area has been secured until a special committee is formed to excavate the grave," he added.
The Islamic State launched attacks in Syria and Iraq in 2014, massacring hundreds in various incidents. One of the main targets of the group were Yezidis from Sinjar, thousands of whom were killed or abducted, with the majority being women and children.
