Newroz Declaration released in Istanbul

The declaration of Istanbul Newroz has been announced at a press conference under the leadership of the Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK), in a hotel in Taksim district

This year's’ Newroz in Istanbul will be celebrated under the motto "Dem dema serkeftinê ye" (Now is the time to succeed)

The following individuals and organizations attended the press conference:

HDK co-spokespersons Esengül Demir and Cengiz Çiçek

Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Co-Chair Pervin Buldan,

Labour Party (EMEP) Chair Ercüment Akdeniz

Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Co-Chair Şahin Tümüklü

Socialist Solidarity Platform (SODAP)

Labour Movement Party (EHP)

Social Freedom Party (TÖP) Community Centres, Partizan, Leverage,

Democratic Alevis Association (DAD),

78's Initiative, Eastern and South-eastern Associations Platform,

Confederation of Public Labourer’s Unions (KESK),

Friendship Cultural Association, New Democrat Youth.

Banners that read "Dema Dema Serkeftine Ye" in Kurdish and Turkish were displayed in the hall where the meeting was held.

IMRALI ISOLATION

HDK co-spokesperson Cengiz Çiçek read out the declaration of Istanbul Newroz and said the following:

“Kawa the Blacksmith in the mythology of the peoples of the Middle East, Caucasus and Asia, has been embraced as the symbol of struggle against tyranny first by the Kurdish people and later by all the oppressed in Turkey. Today’s Kawas continue their struggle for democracy and freedom against contemporary Dehaqs (Kawa’s archenemy, tyrant) with the same faith and determination.
The AKP-MHP fascist government has recently escalated its attacks on the lands of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, as well as its crackdown on the democratic Kurdish politics, identity, culture and existence in Turkey.

Mr. Öcalan has been held in an isolation and torture system in Imrali prison for 24 years. A special regime of isolation and torture is in effect at Imrali, rather than laws.

All political prisoners, particularly sick prisoners, are left to die in Turkey’s jails that have been turned into death houses because of the isolation policies. Political prisoners whose jail terms are over are arbitrarily denied release.

All sick and political prisoners, including Mr. Öcalan, must be released as soon as possible. All political, economic, social and ecological problems, especially the Kurdish issue, cannot be resolved through the isolation regime.

The policies of total war, carried out at home and abroad against the Kurds, are the main causes of inequality, injustice, poverty and corruption, as well as social and political polarization in the country.

'WAR'S ECONOMIC BURDEN ON LABOURERS’ SHOULDERS'

War expenditures have placed a burden on the peoples of Turkey, laborers, workers and the oppressed. The world is going through interesting times. The war in Syria is spreading to Ukraine with the same aims and by similar forces. Migrants and refugees are everywhere from Libya to Syria, from Afghanistan to Ukraine.

'LET'S EXPAND OUR REVOLT IN UNITY'

Newroz is the beginning of spring, the day of new hopes, aspirations and glorious victories. We will celebrate the Newroz of 2022 as the Newroz of freedom and victory. We invite all our people to come together around the Newroz fire, to express our demands for freedom and to celebrate Newroz wherever they are by raising our enthusiasm, anger and rebellion. Now is the time to fight together from Newroz to May 1st.

Now is the time to win:

    Long Live Newroz
    Long Live Unity
    Long Live Kurdistan

Erbil's 12th Freedom and Newroz Festival

The Kurdistan Region's Erbil province will begin the 12th Freedom and Newroz Festival, which celebrates the Newroz feast and commemorates Erbil's liberation on Friday

"Tomorrow, which marks the 31st anniversary of Erbil's liberation, we will kick off the 12th Freedom and Newroz Festival," Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw told a press conference on Thursday. "The festival includes 23 different activities with the participation of numerous artists and singers."

Khoshnaw thanked the festival organizers for their hard work on the preparations and pointed out that Erbil's security offices have taken all the required measures to ensure the festival will be safe and secured.

The festival will begin on Friday with the laying of the foundation stone of the Khaja Bawa statue and ends in the afternoon of March 20.

On March 11, 1991, the residents of Erbil revolted against the brutal Baathist regime. With the support of Peshmerga, they seized control of their city.

Khaja Bawa, who is having a new statue built in her honor, was a heroic Kurdish woman from Erbil who ignited the March 11, 1991, uprising in Erbil. She was the first who came onto the street and called on the city's residents to revolt. Thousands of Erbil residents heeded her call and took to the streets to reclaim their city.

She was shot in the hand while leading a crowd of protesters. This did not stop her. However, she was later shot dead by a sniper while standing on the roof of the Erbil governor's office. She is remembered and honored to this day for her heroic resistance.

Erbil to celebrate March and Newroz

Shafaq News/ Erbil, Kurdistan's capital city, will hold the "March and Newroz" festival after a few-years halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis

In a press conference earlier today, Thursday, Erbil's governor Omed Khoshnaw said that the city has completed the preparations for the festival that started with assorted activities at the weekend.

Bringing together 2,500 persons, the event encompasses 23 art, music, theater, cinema, and children's events.

The security committee has held a series of meetings, Khoshnaw said, to lay down security plans during the days of the Newroz.

The Governor said that the governorate will provide all the necessary facilities to tourists wishing to visit Erbil from mid and southern Iraq.

Newroz coincides with the Spring Equinox. It is a festival celebrating the beginning of spring. Over the years, Newroz has come to represent new beginnings, as well as an opportunity to support the Kurdish cause. For these reasons, Newroz is considered to be the most important festival in Kurdish culture. Typically the festival is celebrated in the days running up to the Spring Equinox, and this year will be celebrated from March 21th to April 1st.

During Newroz, there are special foods, fireworks, dancing, singing, and poetry recitations. Spring flowers (such as tulips, hyacinths, and pussy willows) are cut, new clothes are worn, and pottery is smashed for good luck. Families spend the day in the country, enjoying nature and the fresh growth of spring.

First Newroz fires lit Diyarbakır

Newroz fires were lit and celebrations were held in the boroughs of Bağlar and Kayapınar in Diyarbakır

In Diyarbakır, Newroz fires were lit in the boroughs of Kayapınar and Bağlar, as well as the historical Sur and Çermik boroughs, with the slogan "Dem dema serkeftinê ye" (Now is the time to win). A Newroz fire was lit in the villages of Alankoz and Mirukızir in Bağlar.

Despite the rainy and cold weather, the citizens first lit a fire and then danced halay accompanied by drums and zurna. The women danced halay in their traditional dresses. Young people jumped over the fire".

Calendar of Newroz events in Europe

Calendar of actions to be held under the slogan of “Free Kurdistan” in 15 different countries within the framework of Newroz celebrations

ALL people to participate in the Newroz activities that will be held in order to raise the resistance against occupation policies with the spirit of Kurdish Unity.

“In a few days, we will celebrate Newroz, the day of resistance and freedom of the peoples of Kurdistan. The Newroz celebrations that we will hold this year will be celebrated in many parts of the world and in Europe with the slogan of resistance and resurrection, "Free Kurdistan".

Celebrated as the arrival of spring for thousands of years in Turkey, Kurdistan and the Middle East, Newroz also means resistance and resurrection for the peoples of Kurdistan. Newroz 2022 will bring great hopes for the people.

We welcome Newroz at a time when the occupiers are the weakest and most aggressive, and when our struggle, our people and our friends are the strongest and most enthusiastic.

Therefore, our call must be to defend a common Kurdistan with the spirit of Newroz everywhere, with the spirit of resistance of martyrs Rahshan, Bêrîvan, Ronah and Mazlum, who do not bow to the Dehaks [the tyrant of the legend of Kawa the Blacksmith] and local collaborators of our age, against invasion and massacres.

Three hours to celebrate Newroz

The acting governor of Kirkuk on Tuesday limited the celebration of the Kurdish New Year, Newroz, in the province to only three hours, also banning ethnic slogans. The decision was later called off following criticism

Kurds torch fire on the eve of March 21 to mark the beginning of their New Year and continue celebrating the event for the following three days, with unofficial celebrations lasting for weeks.

However, Acting Governor of Kirkuk Rakan al-Jabouri decided on Tuesday to give Kurds only three hours on March 20, from 4pm-7pm, to celebrate it “without ethnic slogans” or any other slogans that could harm “ethnic and sectarian brotherhood” in the province, according to a ruling a copy of which has been obtained by Rudaw.

Marwan Ibrahim, head of Kirkuk’s media and public relations, told Rudaw later in the day that the decision came after a Kurdish parliamentarian in Baghdad submitted a request asking for celebration permission.

“We do not want the event to cause chaos but bring joy for all [ethnic and religious] groups. Therefore, we have asked our Kurdish brothers to refrain from using strong slogans,” he said, adding that the event will be celebrated on the city’s citadel.

Since taking office in 2017, Jabouri has been widely criticized for his anti-Kurd actions, particularly regarding land disputes between Kurds and Arabs thieves.

Srwa Abdulwahid, head of the Kurdish New Generation bloc in the Iraqi parliament, slammed the governor for the “fascistic” decision, adding that no local authority can ban the celebration of the event.

Following the criticism, Jabouri retracted his ruling, allowing Kurds to celebrate Newroz "anytime and anywhere."
Kirkuk used to be controlled by Kurdish Peshmerga forces; it fell to the hands of the Iraqi forces in October 2017 following an independence referendum by Kurdish authorities in the province and the Kurdistan Region. Since then, Kurds have been unable to freely celebrate ethnic events.

30th anniversary of Cizre massacre

The Newroz demonstration in Turkey’s Kurdish-majority city of Cizre in 1992 marks a historical turning point in the Kurdish people’s struggle to get the Turkish state to recognise Newroz, even unofficially, as a national day of celebration for the Kurds

According to official figures, 57 individuals (close to 100 in other sources) were killed in the city on the 21st and 22nd of March 1992, as state forces started shooting indiscriminately at demonstrators after the crowd refused to stop at a barricade on the main street of the city.

It reportedly started with shots fired from an armoured vehicle. In the ensuing carnage dozens of demonstrators were killed and hundreds wounded within a matter of hours.

People had to refrain from taking the wounded to hospital because they knew they would instantly be arrested and thrown into detention centres to be tortured.

On the second day, a small group of journalists tried to leave the hotel they were staying at to make observations and report on the situation. Although they visibly carried cameras and white flags, they were fired upon by state forces when they stepped out, and a journalist named İzzet Keser was killed.

A witness of the carnage, Bêrîvan Cizîrî, speaks to Jin News.

“Initially there was an attack by helicopters, and the people marching towards the city square were sprayed with pepper gas (…) I was marching in front of the crowd, was among those who led the march.”

She continues:

“They were constantly spraying us with pepper gas, and a short time later, they started shooting. But they were still unable to make us stop or withdraw. We were all determined to continue marching and to reach the square. There was no way of stopping us except conducting a massacre.”

Berivan also adds that after the massacre in Cizre, she decided to join the freedom struggle on the frontlines.

“Later, I decided to join in the frontlines of the revolution, and took the nomme de guerre, Berivan”, she says.

Let's make every day Newroz

On the occasion of Newroz, we call on all the sons and daughters of the Kurdish people to turn every day of this new year into a new Newroz:

This year we welcome a new and different Newroz, which is the symbol of unity, resistance and freedom, it represents one of the greatest symbols of freedom in human history.

Tthe beauty of this occasions has increased and became more meaningful and took its proper place, just as nature opens its doors to bloom in the spring, we also renew and restructure ourselves in every Newroz.

In 2022, the Kurdish people, the Kurdistan Freedom Movement and our friends are waiting for Newroz. We welcome the New Year of Newroz on this basis, as enthusiastic celebrations of Newroz are held in the four parts of Kurdistan and all over the world, wherever there is a patriotic Kurd, the torch of Newroz will be burning.

The PKK was born and developed as the Newroz party, the Kurdish people have turned into the people of Newroz by continuing their struggle and for freedom over the past 100 years.

This is the first time in the history of Kurdistan and leadership of Kurdistan Freedom Movement represented by the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which has been able to continue the struggle and fight for freedom without interruption for fifty years.

We recall all comrades Hakki Qarar, Mazloum Dogan, Khairy Dormusch, Kemal Bir, Sakine Cansiz, Muhammad Karasungur, Akid, Biritan and Zilan. We give them once again a promise that we will achieve their goals and honor their memory.

We must not forget our heroic martyrs who provided the support during the freedom march that lasted 100 years. Those who brought our people's struggle to the point of no return and ensured the victory.

Out of the courage of guerrillas, Kurdish women and youth which created this heroic march to freedom, we salute everyone contributed to the march for freedom with Love and Rspect.

Joint Newroz Declaration

Non-governmental organizations and political parties, including PUK, Gorran, KODAR, PJAK, KKP, KCDK-E and TJK-E, celebrated the Newroz festival in a joint statement on Friday

“The Kurds will spread the fire of freedom into Europe, America, Asia and Australia, and rekindle this fire of freedom, rebellion and resistance as political parties, non-governmental organizations and the Kurdish people in the Newroz celebrations of 2022,” the statement said.

“With their unique struggle, the Kurdish people have made Newroz a symbol of the struggle for emancipation and freedom in the mountains, villages, cities, prisons and in all areas of life,” the statement emphasized.

“Last year was a year of struggle for us in every field. Under these circumstances, this year will be the year of struggle for freedom and liberation for Öcalan, the political prisoners in Turkey’s prison and the Kurdish people,” the organizations said.

In a reference to the current situation in the four parts of Kurdistan, the Kurdish organizations reacted against the invasion attacks of the Turkish state, saying,

To be successful this year, we should strengthen our unity and solidarity. Only in this way can we make this year the year of freedom, liberation and victory
We are welcoming Newroz with some concerns. We should therefore celebrate this year’s Newroz with the spirit of resistance in order not to experience similar massacres such as those in Halabja, Qamishli and Amed Prison. We will celebrate the Newroz festival together in the spirit of Garê victory.

Let’s make the fire of Newroz a bright light that illuminates the way for the unity and solidarity of the people of Kurdistan at a time when the Kurdistan freedom struggle is going through a significant period.

We, as the Kurdish political parties, organizations, institutions, celebrate all Kurds with warm and national feelings over the Newroz festival. Let’s make the 2022 Newroz a day of unity and solidarity. Now is the time to succeed.”

Shengal youth stoking the Newroz fire

In celebration of Newroz, young Yazidi activists from Shengal said, “We will stoke up the flames of the Newroz fire started by Mazlum Doğan and Rehşan all over the world to secure the physical freedom of Öcalan, and that of Êzidxan and Kurdistan."

The Yazidi Young Women's Union and the Yazidi Youth Union staged a march with torches in the evening hours of Wednesday in Shengal's Borik commune to celebrate the Newroz festival.

During the march from the Borik Community Council to the municipality building, the Yazidi activists carried posters of Mazlum Doğan, a prominent cadre of the PKK, and Rehşan Demirel, who set her body on fire during a Newroz celebration in İzmir province, and a banner that read "We will stoke the Newroz fire up in the spirit of youth".

The young activists also carried posters of Kurdish leader Öcalan, chanting slogans the resistance of Öcalan, prisoners and Shengal people.

In a speech here, Free Yazidi Women’s Movement (Tevgera Azadiya Jinên Êzidî, TAJÊ) member Tewrê Şengalî, female activists Nahîde Borik and Xezal Reşo wished all a happy Newroz. They stated that the Newroz festival is a reason for their struggle to defy the oppressors, and that this year’s Newroz will lead to the physical freedom of Öcalan. The activists called for participation in the Newroz celebrations to take place on March 21.

Ezîz Cemîl, a member of the Yazidi Youth Union, read out the statement. He stressed that Newroz is a symbol of resistance and freedom for the Kurdish people, and dozens of freedom fighters set their bodies on fire for this cause. “We will stoke up the flames of the Newroz fire started by Mazlum Doğan and Rehşan all over the world to secure the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, and that of Êzidxan and Kurdistan,” Cemîl said.

After the statement, the young activists started a fire around which they performed the traditional dance govend.

East Kurdistan will celebrate Newroz with enthusiasm

Ferhad Pawe, a member of the KODAR, congratulated the Kurdish people in East Kurdistan, ALL freedom fighters, and all pro-freedom peoples of the world on the Newroz festival. He emphasized that the Kurdish people in East Kurdistan should stand up against the Iranian regime’s policy of making Newroz meaningless by celebrating this year’s Newroz wholeheartedly

Below is Pawe’s Newroz address:

“In the beginning of spring and on Newroz, I revere respectfully all our martyrs who struggled for freedom and liberty. I celebrate Newroz, the resistance day of all freedom fighters, families of martyrs, Kurdish people and pro-freedom peoples of the world:

Newroz is an ancient holiday that dates to the ancient and precious Zagros culture. It has a valuable meaning which promotes struggle, resistance, rebellion and revival to eliminate occupation, subjugation, oppression and all kinds of persecution.

Throughout history, the Kurdish people have struggled for the establishment of a free and equal world against the invaders and oppression. Of course, this year's Newroz has a greater importance and relevance.

The Kurdish people and the freedom movement are now closer to freedom than ever before, and the threats and dangers to our people and the freedom movement have increased and become more alarming.

Newroz has greater meaning and significance this year. As is known, the invading states of Kurdistan, including the corrupt regime of the Islamic Republic and the fascist regime of Turkey, are facing many problems and crises both at home and abroad. The invading Turkish regime is currently attacking the guerrillas who fight for the freedom of Kurdistan and our people in every way possible.

The Iranian state also wants to systematically alienate Newroz from its true nature and meaning and prevent it from being celebrated in a more dignified and enthusiastic way this year. Therefore, our people in East Kurdistan, in all four parts of Kurdistan and abroad, should celebrate Newroz this year with unprecedented enthusiasm and all social segments should participate in the celebrations.

In conclusion, I call on all our people, especially those in East Kurdistan, to participate in the Newroz celebrations in the spirit of Amed Newroz and in the fighting spirit of Mazlum Doğan, to strengthen the voice of the struggle and resistance, and to reach our goals and objectives so that the occupation and destruction of our country will come to an end as soon as possible. I congratulate all of you on Newroz, the festival of resistance and uprising, and say "Bijî Newroz, bijî berxwedan and bijî Kurdistan".”

Freedom Fighters celebrated the 2022 Newroz with great enthusiasm

The guerrillas, who started the celebrations in the early hours of the morning, danced halay around the Newroz fire they lit

In the celebration held under the rain, a speech was delivered remembering "Blacksmith Kawa's resistance against the oppressors. This resistance is emerging more and more in the reality of the PKK today. Comrade Mazlum Doğan's resistance against the invaders continues today. Guerrillas are resisting in the face of the enemy's ongoing oppression of the Kurdish people.

The arrival of spring is also very important for the guerrillas for new operations and new successes. We must prepare ourselves for new moves on the occasion of Newroz. We celebrate the Newroz of the people of Kurdistan."

Speaking during the celebration, the guerrillas stated that they will make the 2022 Newroz successful with the "Dem Dema Azadiye" operation. The guerrillas, who said that great resistance and heroism took place in 2021, added that the Freedom Movement will never be defeated.

Celebrating the 2022 Newroz in the mountains of Kurdistan, the guerrillas emphasized that they will continue to resist until Kurdistan is Independent and Abdullah Öcalan is freed.
