Cemil Bayik appeals to the KDP
international community
Cemil Bayik of the KCK appealed to the Southern Kurdistan’s ruling party KDP in a special broadcast on Stêrk TV: "On behalf of our movement, I give my word: We recognize both the status and the government of Southern Kurdistan and the Peshmerga."

Cemil Bayik, co-chair of the Executive Council of the KCK (Kurdistan Communities Union), commented on current issues in a special broadcast on Stêrk TV. Part of the broadcast deals with the Kurdish liberation movement's stance on the Southern Kurdistan’s ruling party KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party).

Bayik said in his statement that the KCK is not against the KDP and the autonomous status of Başûrê Kurdistanê (Southern Kurdistan) and wants to act together with the KDP against anti-Kurdish forces. For the Kurdish people, the current situation offers opportunities of historic significance, and this opportunity must not be missed, he said.

Bayik appealed to the KDP: "On behalf of our movement, I give my word to the Kurdish people and the peoples worldwide: we recognize both the status and the government of Southern Kurdistan and the Peshmerga. We have no problem with them. On the other hand, I also want the KDP to give its word not to act as an agent of Turkey. It should not serve the genocidal policy. I want it to promise that. If it makes this promise, the problems that are taking place can be solved more easily. We would like our people to lay stress on this issue.

I would like to say something else on this subject: No one can stop this movement and this struggle. No one can ask us not to fight and not to resist. This movement has resisted surrender and betrayal, it will continue this struggle to the end. Until the Kurdish people are free, our movement will not give up resistance for a single day."

The Kurdish-language program was broadcast on Stêrk TV Friday evening.

Until the Kurdish people are free, our movement will not give up resistance for a single day - if this is so, then why is his organisation against having an autonomous status of Bakur Kurdistanê; Rojhilat Kurdistanê and Rojava Kurdistanê, uniting and forming an Independent Greater Kurdistan?

Why are the Northern Kurdish Freedom Fighters in Southern Kurdistan making areas of Southern Kurdistan targets for the Turkish military - how about you showing more respect to your fellow Kurds

And while you are at it, please get rid of your Marxist ideology - Marxism and Communism are no longer acceptable and the vast majority of countries that were once communist have long since done away with such ideas and become more internationally acceptable - Kurds need International Support

Continued airstrikes and
attacks on civilian areas

The Turkish state intentionally bombed civilian residential areas in Southern Kurdistan

A statement on the airstrikes of the Turkish army on the guerrilla areas in Southern Kurdistan:

"In our statement dated January 24, 2021, we stated that the areas of Hecî Umran and Berdesor in Xakurke were bombed by fighter jets on January 22. Our comrade Amed Dorşîn was killed in the air strike. At the same time, the village of Azadî in Hecî Umran was bombed by fighter jets. Residential buildings were damaged and animals killed. There is no base of our forces at the site of this attack or in the surrounding area. The attack was deliberately directed against the population of the region."

Sound-sensitive devices discovered in Gare

"Kurdish freedom fighters encountered balloon-borne sound-sensitive devices near the village of Çemrobotkî in the Meyrokê area of Gare at 2:10 p.m. on January 29. After destroying these devices, our forces withdrew from the area. Subsequently, the Turkish occupying state bombed the area with fighter jets."

Regarding other airstrikes carried out by the Turkish army, on January 26, the areas of Werxelê and Sîda in the Zap region were bombed. On January 29, the Karker and Sîda areas in Zap were again attacked from the air, while another airstrike targeted Werxelê in the Avashin region.

Turkey-PKK clashes rage in Duhok

Farmers in Duhok’s Mount Gara area are unable to tend to their animals and fields as a conflict between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) rages nearby and their villages have been targeted

Image

“People cannot leave Chamanke in order to visit their villages for farming purposes. Our villages are 4-5 kilometers away from Chamanke,” farmer Jambali Omar told Rudaw’s Ayub Nasri on Friday.

Chamanke is located 15 kilometres from Mount Gara where on Wednesday Turkey launched a new operation, dubbed Claw Eagle-2, against the PKK.

Heavy clashes were ongoing on Saturday morning and PKK-affiliated media Firat News Agency (ANF), citing fighters, reported the PKK had “besieged” Turkish soldiers on the mountain.

Alend Amir, mayor of Chamanke, told Rudaw, “Seven villages of Chamanke sub-district have been bombarded by Turkish aircraft.” There are no reported casualties as the residents had already left the villages, though many animals have been left behind.

“We hear the sound of warplanes all the time. The bombardment is really stressful,” said another local farmer Ahmed Abdullah.

The PKK, an armed group fighting for greater political and cultural rights for Kurds in Turkey, has its base in the Kurdistan Region’s mountains. Turkish forces frequently cross the border to carry out air and ground operations against the group. On Saturday, Turkey’s Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, accompanied by senior military commanders, visited Sirnak province on Kurdistan Region's border where the Turkish army's Operations Center is directing Operation Claw Eagle-2, according to a statement from the defense ministry.

Kurdish-led forces across the border in Syria condemned Turkey’s operation, saying it is affecting the Kurds’ fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).

“The risk posed by Turkish activities in Western Kurdistan and Southern Kurdistan is threatening the gains of Kurdish people as a whole, disrupting stability in the region, preparing ground for a potential resurgence of ISIS terrorism, and is creating a negative impact on the state of the fight against ISIS,” read a statement from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), published by Hawar News Agency (ANHA).

The SDF “considers the attacks on Southern Kurdistan to be of great concern and we once again reiterate that we will continue to take the same stance as in the past against ISIS terrorism and Turkish expansionism in the region,” it added.

It called on the global coalition against ISIS “not to remain silent in the face of atrocities and attacks by Turkey that is threatening the stability in our region.”

Both Soutern Kurdistan’s Peshmerga forces and the SDF are key allies of the US-led global coalition in the fight against ISIS.

The US embassy in Ankara on Friday said they were “saddened” to hear of the deaths of three soldiers of NATO-ally Turkey, killed on Mount Gara by PKK “terrorists.”

The PKK claims the Turkish casualties are higher, putting the number of deaths at more than 30 in addition to tens of injuries. The armed group has yet to release figures of its own casualties, but denies Turkish defense ministry claims that 37 fighters have been “neutralized,” a term it uses to refer to persons killed, injured, or captured.

Peshmerga ministry denies involvement in PKK-Turkey clashes

Turkey’s military operation has riled already tense relations between the PKK and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) that controls security forces in Duhok province.

The KRG’s deputy Peshmerga minister on Friday slammed as “baseless” an allegation from the PKK that Peshmerga forces were cooperating with Turkey. “The operation which is being conducted on Mount Gara is absolutely not related or done in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government or the Peshmerga forces,” Sarbast Lazgin told Rudaw’s Bestoon Othman late Friday.

“If the Peshmerga forces want to fight, they will do so overtly – no matter against whom. They do not need to fight secretly or in disguise,” he added.

A PKK umbrella group, the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), on Thursday accused the KDP of coordinating with Turkey in the offensive.

“The guerrilla areas have been surrounded by KDP troops for two to three months anyway. The Turkish state has carried out this attack in the context of this encirclement,” added the statement, referring to Peshmerga forces in KDP-dominated Duhok province.

Later in the day, KDP spokesperson Mahmoud Mohammed denied the accusation, saying his party “has nothing to do with this war and has not taken any action against the PKK to fight it or not.”

On Friday, the PKK’s armed wing, People’s Defense Forces (HPG), said that claims about KDP involvement are not true.

“We do not have any evidence about the involvement of the KDP forces in the Gara operation. Such information is wrong,” the HPG stated.

The KDP and PKK have had thorny relations for decades. The ruling KDP and the KRG accuse the PKK of creating insecurity, using Southern Kurdistan as a safe haven from which to attack Turkey, prompting retaliation from Ankara and clashes that have led to residents fleeing hundreds of villages.

In late 2020, tensions between them escalated over control of Southern Kurdistan’s border regions, especially in Duhok province. A reported mediation from Kurdish politicians and leaders appeared to de-escalate the situation.

Turkish bombardment of Duhok

Turkey’s airstrikes on parts of the Kurdistan Region’s Duhok province as part of its ongoing operation in the area are growing ever more frequent, local sources told Rudaw on Saturday

The strikes “have caused material damage, and the sound of planes can constantly be heard in the skies over Deralok and Chamanke sub-districts,” a local source told Rudaw’s Nasir Ali, speaking anonymously for fear of repercussion.

Airstrikes at the foot of Gara Mountain have been increasing in frequency since last night, the source said, and four helicopters had been circling the area, home to “strategic PKK hideouts and positions.”

Emad Zebari, a teacher and a resident of Galaka village in the Deralok sub-district, told Rudaw that dozens of nomad tents in the local area have been destroyed.

Though Turkish airstrikes on parts of the Kurdistan Region bordering Turkey with the stated aim of targeting PKK bases are frequent, they have increased considerably since Turkey launched a new operation dubbed Claw-Eagle 2 against the Kurdish armed group on February 10.

The mayor of Akre district in Duhok province also told Rudaw that the strikes have intensified over the course of the operation.

“Six villages in our area have been hit by heavy bombardment,” mayor Mazen Mohammad Saeed said on Saturday.

Though no casualties have been reported in Akre district so far, the bombing has “created a lot of fear and anxiety among the people of that area,” he added.

Turkey’s defense ministry announced on Thursday that three of its soldiers had been killed by the PKK this week.

More than 40 Turkish Air Force planes have participated in Claw-Eagle 2, according to the Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency. The PKK are carrying out drone strikes on Turkish military targets in the Kurdistan Region, ANF has reported.

Duhok’s Christian villagers
decry Turkish airstrikes

Christian villagers in Duhok province say sporadic Turkish airstrikes have deprived them of living a normal life, leading many to abandon their villages altogether

Shlimon Ahteel, 66, from the village of Dora in the Barwari Balla region, says residents have not been able to comfortably carry out their religious and traditional ceremonies, due to the area constantly coming under Turkish bombardment.

"Our security situation is very bad. We do not dare bury our dead ones in the village cemetery," Atheel, who only lives in Dora with his wife, told Rudaw on Saturday.

"It has been four years since we did not go to our church [fearing airstrikes]. We do not dare to go. It has been four years since our water supply was cut. We cannot even fix it, because of jets and artillery fires," the elderly Christian man who has been working as a farmer for 30 years now added.

Civilians have borne the brunt of the massive Turkish offensive.

Of 40 families who had lived in this village, only 18 of them have remained fleeing for their lives due to uncertainty and insecurity, Atheel says

And of the 76 villages in the Barwari Balla region, 23 of them are predominantly Christians and none of them has fully been emptied, according to Sarbast Sabri, a local administrative official in the Barwarai Balla region

For decades, both the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and Turkish forces have set up military installations along the Turkey-Iraq border. The rough, mountainous region is home mostly to poor farmers who struggle to earn a living.

Turkey has repeatedly defended its past operations in the Kurdistan Region and northern Iraq, saying neither the Iraqi government nor the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has acted to remove PKK insurgents from the area.

Villagers afraid of Turkish airstrikes

The Turkish army bombarded areas surrounding a number of villages near Mount Gara in Duhok province on Friday, according to a local official, leaving locals afraid of further violence

No material damage or casualties were reported.

The vicinity of the villages of Siyane, Agine and Chamrabatok were bombarded by Turkish forces around 1pm, Shaban Khalil, the mayor of Dinarte subdistrict told Rudaw.

The villages are located in the neighboring subdistrict of Chamanke, but the bombardment has “caused fear” in Dinarte villages as well, according to Khalil.

The bombardment was also reported by Rojnews - a media outlet affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Turkey launched Operation Claw Eagle-2 against the PKK in Kurdistan Region’s Mount Gara on February 10, ending it four days later.

The purpose of the offensive was “to neutralize the PKK and other terrorist elements, ensure border security” and to confirm the whereabouts of “our citizens who were abducted,” Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said in a statement on February 14.

One of the 13 hostages was from Duhok province and the rest were members of Turkish security forces and intelligence.

The bombardment has not been reported by Turkey’s defense ministry.

In a Thursday statement, the PKK said that Turkey had “intensely” bombarded several places on Mount Gara between Saturday and Friday.

The group reported no casualties.

Turkey considers the PKK a terrorist organization. The group has struggled for the increased rights of Kurds in the country for decades.

Erbil's Sidakan explosion

One Peshmerga fighter has been killed and another injured in an explosion in Erbil's Sidakan area, a Peshmerga commander has confirmed to Rudaw

A vehicle carrying two Peshmerga fighters hit TNT explosives late on Friday, Bahram Arif Yasin, the head of Halgurd command told Rudaw, claiming that the explosives were recently laid by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

“The TNT is newly-laid. It was laid by the PKK guerillas a few days ago,” Yasin told Rudaw's Bakhtiyar Qadir.

The two Peshmerga fighters worked in Choman’s Balakatayi area and were returning to visit their village in Sidakan when their car struck the explosives, he added.

The deceased is 46-year-old Tariq Qadir, a father of three children. His colleague Muzafar Hassan, 46, was seriously injured, according to the commander.

The area is frequently bombarded by Turkey due to the presence of the PKK fighters who have laid mines in unpopulated areas to prevent the advance of Turkish forces.

Demining teams affiliated to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have been clearing mines laid by Iraqi success regimes. The clearance is ongoing.

KCK calls for worldwide support

KCK (Kurdistan Communities Union) Executive Council Co-Presidency published a statement condemning the latest attacks by the Turkish state on South Kurdistan and calling for a full-scale resistance. In its statement the KCK criticizes the silence of the KDP and the direct support of the USA and European states for the occupation attacks of the Turkish state. The KCK calls on the Kurdish people, the peoples of the Middle East and democratic forces all over the world to wage a full-scale resistance against the Turkish aggression.

The statement includes the following:

“In the evening hours of April 23, the Turkish state launched a full-scale attack on the Medya Defense Zones which are controlled by the guerrilla. After the Turkish state's defeat in Gare on February 10, it was expected that such an attack would be launched. The 2014 `Subversion Plan` aims at finalizing the Kurdish genocide through crushing the freedom struggle of the Kurdish people. In this context the purpose of the latest full-scale attack is to finalize the Kurdish genocide. For this reason, the attacks are directed at large swathes of the Medya Defense Zones.

The timing of the attacks is meaningful. They were launched deliberately on the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The message is clear: `We have carried out a genocide against the Armenians. And your fate will be the same.’ They managed to subject the Armenians to genocide, thanks to Germany's support and the silence of European countries and the USA. Today, the Turkish state seeks to carry out the Kurdish genocide with the support and silence of the USA and Europe – especially Germany.

Before the start of these genocidal attacks, representatives of the Turkish state held meetings with the UA and European authorities. This is a clear sign of the approval and support of these countries for the latest attacks. The South Kurdish prime minister was also informed beforehand and gave his approval.

Thus, the 1999 international conspiracy against our leader Abdullah Öcalan and the Kurdish Freedom Movement as a whole is still at work. Selfish interests and the policy of using the Turkish state has made the U.S. and the European countries approve and actively support this genocidal campaign against the Kurdish people.

Abetting the Kurdish genocide these states seek to settle their differences with the Turkish state at the expense of the blood of the Kurds. In order to finalize the Kurdish genocide, the Turkish state is ready to appease the international forces and sell all of Turkey’s resources.

While the Turkish state has received the approval and support of international forces, the silence of the KDP and other Kurdish political forces serves to legitimize and approve the recent attacks. There need to be instant protests by all Kurdish political forces and the Kurdish people wherever Kurds are being attacked. All Kurdish political forces are supposed to assume national responsibility. That is why their silence is unacceptable.

The PKK, the guerrilla forces and the whole Kurdish people have immediately reacted to attacks on South Kurdistan or other parts of Kurdistan. Yet, the KDP’s silence in the face of this recent full-scale attack raises a lot of suspicion. For over a year, the KDP has been encircling many areas controlled by the guerrilla and supported the Turkish army openly in Xakurke and other regions.

Thus, it has made its attitude very clear with regard to the occupation operation of the Turkish state. But the whole Kurdish people expects the KDP to take a clear stance against the occupation attacks. Because the Turkish state uses the KDP to legitimize its occupation and to win the support of the international forces. Even though the KDP might not directly participate in the attacks of the Turkish army, its attitude and silence turn it into a force that approves and supports the occupation operation.

If the KDP and all other Kurdish political forces take a stance against these attacks, the Turkish state won't be able to win international support. This will also make it impossible for the Turkish state to carry out such intense attacks.

The latest attack of the Turkish state also negates the political will of Iraq and puts the territorial integrity and unity of the country at risk. Therefore, a clear stance by Iraq will expose the illegitimacy of this occupation operation and weaken it. If Iraq decides not to take a stance against the attacks of the Turkish state, they will be normalized, opening the way for future attacks on the unity of Iraq.

Should Iraq consider these attacks as attacks on its unity, it needs to demand the end of the occupation attacks and fulfill its responsibility by making an immediate statement. If it fails to do so, the current Iraqi government will become part of these attacks and will share the blame for them. It will be remembered as the government that opened the way for even more attacks by the Turkish state on Iraq.

It is important for the whole Kurdish people, its friends and all democratic forces to acknowledge that the goal of these attacks is a genocide. Not only the guerrilla, but the whole Kurdish people are being targeted. The goal is to crush the guerrilla in order to be able to finalize the Kurdish genocide.

By eliminating the freedom forces not only in South Kurdistan but also in all other parts of Kurdistan, the Turkish state aims at subjecting the Kurds to genocide. Therefore, the recent attacks are also directed at the gains and freedom of South Kurdistan and Rojava Kurdistan.

Nobody should just wait for the resistance of the guerrilla to bring an end to the occupation. This attack is directed at all Kurds and aims at bringing an end to their existence. Therefore, the whole Kurdish people needs to rise up everywhere and stand in unity with the guerrilla.

The struggle of the guerrilla alone will never be enough for the success of the freedom and democracy struggle of a people. The people need to become fully integrated with the guerrilla struggle and participate in the all-out struggle against genocide and colonialism. Today, the rising up and the attitude of the Kurdish people on this year's Newroz needs lead to an uprising everywhere thus uniting the people’s struggle with that of the guerrilla.

Inspired by the resistance spirit of Heftanin and Gare the guerrilla is resisting and willing to make sacrifices. In order to foil this full-scale attack, the people need to associate itself with the guerrilla struggle and thus give a historic response. With the spirit of our campaign `Time to ensure freedom` it is time to rise up and resist everywhere.

The full-scale attack of the Turkish state against the Medya Defense Zones is at the same time an attack to occupy all of South Kurdistan. The goal is to crush the guerrilla thus destroying the most important center of resistance in South Kurdistan. This would also break the willpower of the political forces of South Kurdistan and make it possible for the Turkish state to make South Kurdistan part of its genocidal system. That is why all South Kurdistan intellectuals and artists who are aware of the situation and have a sense of pride need to immediately take a stance against these attacks and start a resistance campaign together with the people of South Kurdistan against the occupation.

All cities, small towns and villages need to be turned into points of resistance against the occupation. It is once again time for the South Kurdistan people to show its huge sense of patriotism. The resistance attitude of the people of Amediye, Deralok and Şeladize against the occupiers needs to spread all over South Kurdistan. The youth of South Kurdistan need to rush to join the guerrilla and fight against the occupiers.

It is also important for all peoples of the Middle East and all democratic forces to know that this attack is directed at their freedom and democratic will. The Turkish state is the enemy of all forces of freedom and democracy in the Middle East. Because it can uphold its genocidal, colonialist system only through crushing the forces of democracy and freedom. Therefore, the Middle Eastern forces of democracy and freedom – especially those in Turkey – need to stand side by side with the Kurdish people and the guerrilla. This resistance is your resistance for freedom and democracy, too.

The global democratic forces need to rise up against this genocidal attack of the Turkish state – carried out with the support of the USA and Europe – and stand side by side with the resistance of the Kurdish people and the guerrilla. Today, the Turkish state has become the center of hostility towards freedom and democracy. At the same time, Kurdistan has become the center of the struggle for freedom and democracy. The success of the Kurdish people’s and the guerrilla’s resistance will be the success of all forces of freedom and democracy and all peoples in the world.

We call on all countries – especially the USA and Europe – who have approved and support Turkey's attacks: Refrain from supporting the attacks of the fascist AKP-MHP government which aim at carrying out the Kurdish genocide and crushing all democratic forces. Don't be a party to the Kurdish genocide! Your silence and the support of Germany in the face of the 1915 Armenian genocide is being repeated and continued in the face of the Kurdish genocide.

Therefore, all governments in the USA and Europe who represent their peoples need to show that they won’t take part in the attack of the Turkish state and the Kurdish genocide. They need to take a stance against these attacks.”

We can't leave our houses

Amedi villagers terrified of Turkish bombardments

Villagers in Duhok's Amedi district have said they are afraid to leave their homes and visit the nearby mountains due to regular Turkish bombardments.

"None of us dare to go out to collect herbs. Even our sheep can’t go out to graze," said farmer Sardar Sargale.

"We can’t leave our houses this spring, during the herb harvest season. It’s a nice time for sheep and livestock, but no one dares to go out," said housewife Khayal Sdiq.

"Our hands are tied. We get scared when we see the jets coming."

More than 500 villages have been emptied due to the conflict between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a Kurdish armed group which has bases in the mountains of the Kurdistan Region.

For decades, the PKK has fought Turkey for the increased rights of the country's Kurdish minority. It is designated a terrorist organisation by Ankara.

Civilians in Duhok province have told Rudaw of their terror after Turkey launched a new cross-border military offensive on Friday night against the PKK, dubbed Operation Claw-Lightning and Claw-Thunderbolt.

Duhok villagers could be targeted along with PKK

Turkish soldiers questioned a number of villagers in Duhok province on Friday, warning them they could be subject to Turkish bombardment if fighters from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) stage attacks from their village, area residents told Rudaw

“We were irrigating our farm and suddenly heard someone calling us in Turkish,” Abbas Mustafa, a resident of Hirore village told Rudaw on Friday. “There were three or four of them.”

Mustafa said a Kurdish village guard from Turkey, who was working for the soldiers, joined them to translate.

The villager stated the soldiers warned him not to go too far from their village, not to carry weapons outside the village and not to drive a vehicle — otherwise they could be mistaken for PKK fighters.

“They said if PKK fighters pass through the village and fire at them (the Turkish soldiers), they will bombard them, no matter where they are,” he stated.

Another resident of the village, Lazgin Mohammed, said he was also called for a meeting with the soldiers.

“We were irrigating (our farms) in the village between 10:30 am to 11 am. I saw them (the soldiers) sitting with Abbas,” Mohammed told Rudaw.

Such meetings between the Turkish army and villagers are rare in the Kurdistan Region. The villagers said this is the first time Turkish soldiers have met with them.

Rudaw has learned the soldiers, who Mustafa said numbered about 20, established a military base in the vicinity of Hirore village three weeks ago. The soldiers spoke with the villagers for nearly half an hour.

Mohammed said the soldiers also questioned him about PKK movements in the area.

“They asked if we could see them (PKK fighters),” Mohammed said. “We told them we have never seen any of them and they have not bothered us.” He added the soldiers told them they would not bother or harm the villagers if PKK fighters were not present in the village.

“If they are close to the village it will be dangerous (for you). If they fire at us from the village, we will defend ourselves, disregarding the fact that it may affect you as well.” Mohammed said, quoting one of the soldiers.

Mustafa said he was asked to inform the chief of the village to prevent PKK movement there.

The Turkish army launched two military operations in Duhok province's Avashin, Basyan, and Metina areas on April 23. Their stated aim is to remove the PKK fighters from these areas.

Hirore village is located close to Kesta and Chalke villages, which have been heavily bombarded during both campaigns.

The PKK is a Kurdish armed group struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey. It is considered a terrorist organization by Ankara which regularly carries out military campaigns against the group at home and in the Kurdistan Region.

Although Turkish officials have said that they do not target civilians during the clashes with the PKK, there have been several civilian casualties in the Kurdistan Region due to Turkish bombardment.

Turkish bombs halt tourism to parts of Duhok

Resorts in Duhok's Begova area are suffering from an absence of tourists caused by the Turkish army's assault on the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) while tourism continues strong throughout the rest of the province

Ubed Darwesh, the owner of one of the many Begova resorts said that gunshots and explosions in the distance from the conflict between the Turkish military and the PKK have scared away tourists.

"The moment they hear a gunshot, they'll leave right away. As a result, we have lost money because no one is coming to visit."

Hirore village was also once a tourist-filled destination before the Turkish airstrikes. However, the village has come into the crosshairs of Turkey's latest operation in Duhok's bordering areas, with its vicinity being pounded frequently.

"Buses filled with people...used to come here," said Hassan Hirori, a local from the village.

According to the province's tourism department, Duhok has approximately 900 resorts, at least 12 of which are located near Hirore and Begova.

However, there has been a massive tourist influx into places which haven't been affected by the bombardment.

Villager displacement in Duhok province

Members of the Kurdistan Region and Iraqi parliaments visited Duhok province on Tuesday to speak with villagers displaced from border areas where Turkey is conducting an operation against alleged Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) positions, a Kurdish MP has told Rudaw

“A parliamentary delegation of the Kurdistan Region’s parliament, with some members of the Iraqi council of representatives … is investigating the tension at the border areas in Duhok province, in addition to losses created by this tension between both Turkey and the PKK forces, as well as the PKK and Peshmerga forces,” Shno Shahid Ashqi, a Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) MP said on Tuesday.

“We are sitting with some of the village chiefs, we are listening to their complaints. They are the ones who have evacuated their villages,” he added.

Ashqi, who is also a member of the Health, Environment and Consumer Rights committee in the Kurdistan Region parliament, said the villagers have said suffered great losses in a number of areas.

Not only “have their trees been cut but all of their lands has been burned and destroyed. They have suffered great losses, more than what is talked about in the media and on social media. Their houses are looted, their electricity destroyed, their livestock is being stolen.”

The delegation will stay in Duhok for two days and will write up a report to be sent to both Erbil and Baghdad. The group is made up of MPs from various committees, including agriculture, health and environment and defense and security.

The visit comes amid multiple incidents in Duhok province, including the ongoing Turkish military operations and reports of Turkish deforestation to make way for military bases.

Turkish armed forces launched Operations Claw-Lightning and Claw-Thunderbolt in April, targeting alleged PKK positions in northern Duhok province. A goal of the operation is to establish a military base to block PKK movements between the Kurdistan Region and Turkey and Syria.

The PKK is an armed group struggling for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey. Ankara considers it a terrorist organization and frequently bombards areas in the Kurdistan Region and northern Iraq’s disputed territories on the grounds of targeting PKK positions.

They have been blamed for two separate attacks on Peshmerga forces that resulted in the death of six Peshmerga, allegations the PKK have denied.

News that Turkey has been deforesting areas near the border where it is setting up military outposts has also sparked recent outrage in the Kurdistan Region.

According to Balambo Kokoy, a PUK MP in the parliamentary delegation and the vice-chair of the Interior, Security and Local Councils committee, 17 villages “are completely destroyed” in the Zakho sub-district of Darkar, and the rest of the villages are unsafe for return.

In Zakho’s Batifa sub-district, 13 villages have been destroyed and 60 are in a “very insecure” situation, he added.

Villages have been emptied due to Turkish bombings, with more than 500 villages emptied due to the Turkey-PKK conflict since 1992, according to a Kurdistan Region parliamentary report published last year.

Kakoy says Iraq needs to take a stronger stance on Turkish incursions into the region, which was also discussed by the Iraqi parliament’s foreign relations committee on Tuesday.

”The first step is that we need to be united, and the next step is that we need to tell the Iraqi government that 'if you consider Kurdistan as Iraq for revenue purposes, you need to consider its sovereignty as Iraqi as well.' Arab countries shouldn’t cover their eyes and ears and they shouldn’t accept this violation from the Turkish state,” Kokoy said.

A number of civilians have been injured in the recent Turkish-PKK conflict in the Kurdistan Region. In the latest incident, one man was injured while working in his vineyard, in addition to two brothers who were injured by bombing while they slept at home. Another was injured in the village of Deshish in the north of the province.

Students in Duhok fear losing school year

Harmin Waheed, 19, is afraid she will miss out on this year's classes as she has fled home and sought shelter in another village with her family because of the ongoing conflict between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)

Waheed, a grade 12 student, and her family left the village of Kesta along with dozens of other families in late April. She says instead of going to school, she now just does housework. They have taken shelter in Dargalka village.

"They [Turkey] fired missiles plenty of times causing huge bangs, not letting us study. They did not let us continue our studies. Nobody was in the mood to study," she recalls of the misery they faced back home in Kesta.

Waheed and her family took shelter at Begova Highschool in the village of Dagalka.

"The aftermath leaves us terribly frightened. Although the fight is a little far from our village, we can still hear it. The loud bangs sound so close, they terrify us," Warshin Hassan, a student, told Rudaw on Monday.

Teachers have warned that the number of students is declining year by year thanks to the decades-long impact of warfare in the mountainous border region.

According to data from the Amedi Education Department, 22 schools and 800 students have been affected by Turkish airstrikes and bombings.

The Amedi sub-district where the above-mentioned villages are located has been hard hit by the war Turkey has waged against the PKK in the Kurdistan Region, an organization fighting for increased rights for Kurds in Turkey, but considered a terror group by Ankara. Over three decades, more than 500 Kurdistan Region villages have been emptied and scores of civilians have been killed.

Turkey launched Operations Claw-Lightning and Claw-Thunderbolt on April 23, targeting alleged PKK positions in northern Duhok. People’s homes, farmlands, and livestock, as well as the surrounding environment have been damaged.

Homes in Duhok are looted, damaged

Six months after they fled their homes in northern Duhok because of clashes between the Turkish army and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a group of villagers returned and found their homes had been looted, their belongings stolen or destroyed

"I saw all the doors were broken. The house supplies have been taken out into the streets, there was a mess," said Mahdi Naif, one of three men who snuck back to visit their village Roisy in the Batifa district. “The whole village was looted.”

"We found that they had left our houses in shambles," said Omer Ali, another villager who visited their homes. "The doors were smashed, no supplies were left for the people. What's left is not usable."

Roisy village has been abandoned for six months because of conflict between Turkey and the PKK. Eighteen families fled the community for safer areas in December. Four Turkish military bases have been established within close proximity of the village.

The PKK is an armed group fighting for greater rights for Kurds in Turkey. It has bases in the Kurdistan Region's mountains and the Turkish army frequently carries out cross-border operations against the group. Local civilians are victims of the conflict. They are targeted in bombing campaigns and driven from their homes. More than 500 villages have been emptied in the Kurdistan Region over three decades of Turkey-PKK conflict.

Eight kilometers south of Roisy, the village of Soryana is also worried about lack of security.

"There's no security here. We put a hand on our hearts and say we depend on Allah," said Ezzadin Rasheed, who lives in Soryana.

Last year, there were 15 families living in Soryana, but now there are only five.

Some 1,500 people have been displaced from 22 villages because of Turkey’s most recent operations, according to Christian Peacemaker Teams. Turkey launched operations Claw-Lightning and Claw Thunderbolt against the PKK in northern Duhok province in April.

Turkey attacks Zakho villages

Villages and resorts in northern Duhok province have lost more than a million dollars this summer because of Turkey's offensive against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Villages have been evacuated and damaged, and resorts are empty of tourists

“We invested $7,000 in this [house] but Turkey damaged it and now it is gone,” said Ali Muhsin, a former resident of Bihere village located within the Zakho district.

Bihere, along with 21 other villages, has been affected by Turkish military operations that were launched in April, according to the mayor of Zakho’s office.

“We fled to Darkar, selling our 600 goats,” Muhsin added.

When Turkey bombarded the yard of his house in May and injured his brother, they and five other families fled the village. Since then, no one has returned, except for brief visits to their property.

Additionally, 28 resorts have been affected by the bombardment, the Sharansh waterfall being one of them. It used to see 20,000 tourists annually, however, that was not the case this year.

“I invested nearly $20-30,000 in it this year,” said Ali Mahmoud, the owner of the tourist destination. “Ten families live off the resort, including workers, villagers and us. This is no longer the case.”

According to the mayor's office, losses in 50 villages and resorts have totaled 1.6 billion dinars ($1.1 million) due to the clashes between the PKK and Turkey.

A total of 30 villages in Zakho have been evacuated since April 24.
