ERBIL, Sept. 13 (AKnews) – Kurdistan Region now produces 221, 000 megawatts annually while the region had been producing only 547 MWs between 2007 and 2008, said a representative from Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)'s Ministry of Electricity.

Hama Amin Hawramany told a press conference that the Ministry provided the citizens in Kurdistan with 22 hours of electricity in August which was increased to 23 hours of power supply in the last two weeks.

Hawramany added KRG used to import 160 MWs from Iraq and 104 MWs from Turkey in 2007 and 2008.

This is while now the KRG imports electricity to Mosul, Kirkuk and Tuz Khurmatu, which now lie under the control of the Iraqi government.

If the region's electricity production reaches 3,000 MWs the Ministry will provide its citizens with full time electricity (24 hours), said Umed Ahmed, KRG's electricity control director.

The second Erbil's international electricity and energy fair will be opened on Sept.17. Some 500 companies from 21 states confirmed their participation in the four-day expo, Ahmed indicated.

221000 mw is a wrong figure , it's prob 2210. SK wants to produce 6000 by 2014 and two giant companies are already working on it, we already have 23 hrs per day Iraq has 4 lol, and we already giving Kirkuk 200 mw. But in the future Kurdistan will export its electricity and it will add more $$$ to our budget.

PNA-A delegation from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) took part in the 22nd Economic Forum held in Poland earlier this month.

The delegation included the KRG Minister of Planning, Dr Ali Sindi, the Chairman of the Kurdistan Board of Investment, Minister Herish Muharam, and the KRG representative to Poland, Mr Ziyad Raoof. Each participated on panels at the forum, speaking about the opportunities that Kurdistan has to offer, as well as the Region’s security and ongoing growth and development.

In a panel entitled ‘Prospects for Cooperation between the Region of Kurdistan and Europeans Regions,’ Minister Sindi, spoke about the ongoing cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and parts of Europe, specifically highlighting a recent cooperation agreement between the Malopolska Region of Poland and the Kurdistan Region.

Minister Sindi said he believes that relations between Malopolska and Kurdistan are likely to see rapid development and affirmed his hope to see other European regions also develop strong ties with Kurdistan.

Minister Muharam gave an overview of foreign investment in the Kurdistan Region, as well as a summary of strategic investment opportunities that currently exist in the panel ‘Eurasian Land Bridge: Real Opportunities and Prospects.’

Mr Ziyad Raoof presented a paper on behalf of the Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, Minister Falah Mustafa, whose visit to Poland had to be postponed due to other commitments.

Minister Mustafa’s paper stated, “Our economy has shown steady growth year on year in spite of the global economic downturn…In order to maintain this continued growth, our government has actively pursued the building of relationships with the international community.”

His paper concluded, “There has never been a better time to come and see for yourself the opportunities that exist in the Region.”

In addition to their participation in the Economic Forum, the delegation held meetings with the Marshal of the Malopolska Region, Mr. Marek Sowa and his Deputy, as well as a number of prominent Polish corporations.

The 22nd Economic Forum was attended by over 2,500 guests from around the world, including representatives from the political, economic, and scientific communities, as well as many NGOs. Prime Minister hosts groundbreaking for Duhok International Airport

Dohuk, Kurdistan Region - Iraq – (KRG.org) – Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani today hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for a new international airport in Duhok.

Duhok International Airport will be the third airport in the Kurdistan Region. After its completion in 2015, travellers will have direct international access to each of the Region’s three provinces.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of airports to the ever-growing trade, investment and tourism in the Kurdistan Region. “The building of airports in all of Kurdistan’s provinces paves the way to the outside world. This is a vehicle to open up a Region that is closed to the world. This airport is a bridge between a land locked nation and the outside world,” he said.

Emphasising the progress that the Region has experienced over the past several years, the Prime Minister said, “The steadfastness of the Kurdish people, and the assistance of our friends around the world, has allowed us to reach this day,” adding, “…this is a national achievement even more than it is just an airport for Duhok province.”

The Prime Minister went on to thank the international companies participating in the project, including the Lebanese Dar Al-Handasa Engineering, which designed the facilities, ADPI of France, Makyol construction company, and a team from South Korea’s Incheon International Airport which will supervise the construction.

sKurdista other two airports in Erbil and Slemani already provide direct flights to more than 25 destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Commercial flights to Erbil began in 2005, and the $550 million state-of-the-art Erbil International Airport (EIA) opened for business in March 2010. Now one of the fastest growing airports in the world, EIA saw a 37% increase in traffic between 2010 and 2011, for a total of 620,000 passengers. And in the first two quarters of 2012, passenger numbers indicate that the growth rate will rise to around 50% this year.

The Deputy Minister of the federal Iraqi Ministry of Transport, who has provided a great deal of support to the project, was present at today’s ceremony, as was the Head of Iraqi Airways and representatives from the Iraqi Aviation Authority.

In addition to many members of the local business and diplomatic communities, the ceremony was also attended by the KRG Minister of Transport and Communication, Mr Jonson Siyaoosh, the Minister of Municipalities and Tourism, Mr Dilshad Shahab, and the Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy, Mr Rasheed Tahir.

Arbil aspires to be a regional hub

PostAuthor: brendar » Tue Sep 25, 2012 12:35 am

Authorities in Kurdistan are seeking foreign investment in tourism and infrastructure projects.
Image

While Iraqi Kurdistan is reaping the benefits of massive oil reserves, estimated at 45 billion barrels, there has been a strategic push from its leaders to develop other sectors of the territory — specifically tourism, investment and infrastructure projects. While much of the country still lags behind in terms of modern infrastructure, there are visible indications of rapid development.

In Arbil, the capital of Kurdistan, with a population of 2 million, housing developments are sprouting everywhere from undeveloped lands, paved roads are modern with traffic lights and police providing organisation, and five star hotels are emerging. As foreign investors are slowly beginning to distinguish between Kurdistan and Iraq, they become more comfortable and at ease to invest in Iraq’s northern and more secure territory. Proof of this is the growing number of international flights opening up, the most recent of which was Emirates Airlines — making it the third city after Baghdad and Basra.
Kurdistan’s progress has not been an overnight venture but, in fact, began in 2006 after a government initiative put in place a comphrensive development plan to see the region through the next few decades with the goal of opening up its tourism industry and to model Arbil as a regional hub for investment, entertainment and business.

Speaking to Gulf News, Andrew Jones, commercial development advisor for the Arbil International Airport, says he envisions the airport to be an international and regional hub, modelled much after Dubai’s airport. Surely, with its location between Europe and Asia and its close proximity to Turkey, Iran and Syria, the potential for revenue is enormous. However, the main obstacle the Kurdish government faces is to dispel the fear factor surrounding Iraq and promote itself as a modern and safe territory amidst a turbulent region.

To be certain, Kurdistan has first and foremost invested in security, with multiple checkpoints, searches and scans at the airport. Five star hotels also have checkpoints for luggage at the entrance. Also, it was clear that police were heavily deployed, both in uniform and plainclothed, in Arbil and near tourist areas in the countryside. While seemingly over-the-top, the level of security could comfort developers who wish to join the current wave of investment.

Impact of war on tourism

In fact, northern Iraq (now Kurdistan) was one of the prime tourist destinations in the region during the ’60s and ’70s, with many Gulf nationals visiting its scenic mountainside on vacation. With the Iraq-Iran war in the ’80s and the US invasion in 2003, Iraq lost billions in tourism revenue and investments.
Maulawy Jabar Wahab, the head of the Tourism Board, told Gulf News that slowly Kurdistan is attracting tourists again, mainly from its neighbours Iran, Turkey and Syria. Many Arab Iraqis also choose to vacation there — and view it as a safe haven. As more and more Gulf airlines are operating flights to Arbil, Kurdistan also hopes to gain back the interest of Gulf nationals. Surely, with popular destinations for Gulf nationals become increasingly unstable, such as Lebanon, Syria and Egypt, Kurdistan could become a popular alternative quickly.

During Eid holidays, Wahab says that 90 per cent of hotels in the city of Arbil were booked. He estimates $1 billion (Dh3.67 billion) in tourism revenue this year. “We are working hard to attract Gulf residents to Kurdistan by increasing the number of travel companies and advertisments in the Gulf,” he said. “Our marketing team has been studying the needs of different nationalities to attract them,” Wahab added.

However, because only two five star hotels are currently open in Arbil, prices are exorbitant, with a room starting at $450 at the Rotana. The other five star hotel is the Turkish-owned Divan hotel, where prices reach up to $10,000 a night for deluxe suites. However, prices could go down in the future as new five star hotels have been approved for construction, including the Kempinski, Hilton, Sheraton and Marriott. Currently, tourism revenue makes up for 6.7 per cent of Kurdistan’s GDP but the tourism board is working towards the goal of doubling this share.

Not only does Kurdistan hope to attract tourists through its luxury hotels but unlike other more modern cities, it offers the charm of remnants of ancient civilisations, such as the citadel which sits in the city centre and is the oldest continuously inhabited town in the world. Arbil has hosted many different civilisations dating back from the Ur III civilisation 6,000 years ago. It has also been ruled by Neo-Assyrians and Mongols. And during the Sassanian and Abbasid periods, it has been an important centre for Christianity.

Tourist appeal

An excavation in the Zagros mountains outside of Arbil in 1957 by a team from Colombia University found the first adult Neanderathal skeletons in Iraq dating back 80,000 years. This and other historical sites could peak the interest of archaeological tourists worldwide. But a lot of groundwork has to be done to attract these tourists.

To be sure, Arbil and the surrounding areas in the countryside have a long way to go in terms of tourist appeal. There is little nightlife in the city as most places close extremely early and the options are few. If marketed properly, Arbil could be an attractive destination for the party scene as it has very lax laws related to alcohol licensing. The most attractive shopping mall, called Family Mall, does little to entice foreign tourists — as it pales in comparison to malls in other surrounding countries such as Lebanon and Turkey. The lack of available outlets for tourists to shop and party could be a chief obstacle to its growth.
That is where the investment board comes in. While 80 per cent of investment in Kurdistan has been domestic, it is hoping to attract foreign investment too. Foreign investment in Kurdistan is still young and makes up only 14 per cent of the total investment in the region. Lebanese, Turkish, Egyptian and German companies are the biggest foreign investors, involved mostly in housing development projects.

Lebanon, meanwhile, has a unique edge in the banking sector. Currently, the Emirati Trojan Company is working on a housing development project and will be completed in three years. UAE-based Deyaar is also in discussions with the investment board in Arbil to develop a project to attract medical tourism. The prime focus of the investment board is to developing housing and infrastucture as a starting point to attract future investments.

Kurdistan has a long way to go but with a booming oil industry and a sharp marketing strategy, investors will surely see Kurdistan’s potential. Already many Kurdish citizens have lived in Western countries and have brought back a unique perspective on how the future of their country should look. Kurds have the added advantage of being culturally close with a broad range of nationalities such as Arabs, Turks, Iranians and Europeans. This could make for a more welcoming and tolerant environment to attract expatriates wanting to invest in its economy. The UAE model could work in Kurdistan but it must be followed through with smart leadership and proper management of its resources.

Salahaddin, Kurdistan Region (KRP.org) – President Barzani today met separately with a large American delegation and a British delegation to discuss business and investment opportunities in Kurdistan.

The two delegations, which represent a number of large US and British companies, are in Kurdistan to attend this year’s Erbil International fair, an annual trade event organized by the KRG to promote investment and business activity in Kurdistan.

Heading the US business delegation, Mr. David Tafuri, President of the US-Kurdistan Business Council (USKBC), said, “This is the largest ever US business delegation to visit Kurdistan.” He said the US-Kurdistan Business Council is actively working to encourage more US companies to come and invest in Kurdistan. The USKBC represents 30 US companies and organizations from several industry sectors and is in partnership with the US Chamber of Commerce.

The President also met with a British business delegation along with the British Consul General in Erbil, Hugh Evans.

In both meetings, President Barzani expressed strong KRG eagerness to expand commercial ties with US and British companies and added that there are numerous business and investment opportunities in Kurdistan, particularly in the areas of education, capacity building, agriculture, water resources, and energy.

UK Consul General Hugh Evans said although British companies have been lagging behind, there is now great interest and they are catching up rapidly in establishing their presence here in Kurdistan. He also said the UK government is committed to establishing long-term ties with the Kurdistan Region and has recently decided to allocate more resources to its consulate in Erbil.
