A teenager who lured in a 15-year-old boy on Snapchat before stabbing him to death has been found guilty of murder



Michael Irving was killed by two teenage boys in Stratford, east London in September last year.

They stabbed him four times including once in the heart, the Old Bailey heard.

A 16-year-old was found guilty on Friday at the Old Bailey. Another teenager admitted to taking part in the murder earlier this year.

Jurors heard that a possible motive was an allegation that Michael had touched one of the killers' sisters in a sexual way.

But Michael's mother told the court that Michael denied touching the girl.

The two boys arranged to meet Michael via Snapchat in the early evening of September 3.

He appeared happy to see them, a friend of Michael's who saw them said.

The 16-year-old defendant denied killing Michael but said he had been at the scene of the crime.

But prosecutor Hugh Davies QC told jurors that even if the boy hadn't stabbed Michael himself, the killing was a "classic joint enterprise" case.

The joint enterprise law means people can be convicted of murder if they were there - even if they didn't inflict the fatal blow.

The two boys will be sentenced on April 17.

Woolwich teen knifed to death

A teenager who was rammed off his motorbike and stabbed to death was on his way home to bake cakes with his grandmother, she revealed today

Cameron Murfitt, 18, was found with multiple stab wounds on Woolwich Common. Passers-by, paramedics and police fought to save his life but he died at the scene at 3.30pm on Sunday.

Witnesses say they saw two men in a white car plough into Mr Murfitt’s motorbike sending him flying.

One suspect chased him into bushes on the common and knifed him, they said.

Mr Murfitt lived in Greenwich with his grandmother Maxine Murfitt, 60.

She told the Standard: “His last words to me were ‘See you Nan’. He was going to a friend’s to get his motorbike first. We were planning to make cakes when he got home. Then I was told he had been stabbed. I couldn’t believe it. I am heartbroken.

“He lived for his family — he was a lovely boy. He had a heart of gold. His mum Samantha is so devastated she can hardly talk.”

Mr Murfitt’s uncle Ryan Murfitt said the teenager had been involved in a feud but was turning his life around.

He said: “He had to leave London for a while but was back. Everything seemed calm. I was offering him some building work and his life seemed back on track.

“He loved football and was a big Chelsea fan, and he loved motorbikes. He was a kind, caring, family-orientated person. He had everything to live for.”

Friends and family laid flowers at the scene. Witness Ben Arara, 39, a facilities manager, said: “A white car smashed hard into the motorcyclist, who went flying. One of the men in the car, in a grey tracksuit, chased him and pulled a knife.”

He added: “I went over to try to help the boy. His leather motorcycle jacket had helped stop further stab wounds… I gave him CPR.

“He looked so young. I asked him his name but he never came around again.

“The emergency services were there in three minutes. They operated on him in the road. This was no road rage — they were after him.”

Mr Murfitt is the fourth London teenager killed in two weeks, after the deaths of Shanur Ahmed, 16, Archie Beston, 19, and 17-year-old Damani Mauge.

Police arrested an 18-year-old from the Thamesmead area on suspicion of murder on Monday. He remains in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Richard Leonard said: “While inquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident, we know there was a collision between a white car and a motorbike being ridden by the victim.

“As a result, the victim came off his bike and the suspect exited the vehicle and stabbed him. At this stage officers believe both parties were known to each other.”

Man fighting for life after being shot in head in north London

A man is fighting for his life after being shot in the head in north London.

Police scrambled to Hertford Road, in Enfield, to reports of a firearm incident at around 4.40pm on Thursday.

Officers and paramedics found a man with a head injury at the scene, Scotland Yard said.

A spokeswoman said: “He has been taken to hospital where he is in a life-threatening condition."

No arrests have been made and police are launching an investigation into the incident.

A cordon remains in place while police investigate.

Man stabbed in north London

Police have launched a manhunt after a 35-year-old man was stabbed in the leg by a stranger in north London

Officers were called to Whittington Park, Archway at 10.18am on Tuesday to reports of an injured man.

The victim told them at the scene that he had been knifed while out running.

He was treated by the London Ambulance Service before being taken to hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Boy, 16, seriously injured in 'senseless' attack

A 16-year-old boy has suffered serious injuries after he was stabbed in a "senseless" attack in north-east London.

Police and paramedics were called at about 6.40pm on Monday to reports of a group of youths fighting in Green Lanes Walk, Manor House.

They found the injured boy who was rushed to hospital where he remains. His condition is described as serious but stable, police said.

Three 17-year-old boys and a 19-year-old man, all from Hackney, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

They were taken to north London police stations and have been released on bail until mid-May.

Officers are appealing for people with information about the attack to come forward.

Detective Constable Luke Martinez from the Met Police's Central East Command Unit said: “I am shocked by the level of violence shown in this nasty assault.

"We have a number of urgent enquiries underway to understand exactly who is responsible. I urge anyone with information, or who witnessed what happened, to get in touch.

Knife crime rises to record high

Knife crime in England and Wales increased last year to a new record high, figures released by the Office for National Statistics have shown

The ONS said police recorded 45,627 offences in the year to December 2019.

Remember this is the tip of the iceberg

That is 7% more than in 2018, and the highest since knife crime statistics were first collected in 2010-11.

The figures - which do not include Greater Manchester Police because of IT issues - showed a 13% rise in the West Midlands.

Downing Street acknowledged there was "more to be done to crack down on thugs carrying knives and ensuring they are properly punished".

And Diana Fawcett, chief executive of the charity Victim Support, stressed that while the UK's streets were currently "quieter" due to coronavirus, victims of historic knife crime were still coming to terms with their experience.

"Many victims will still be dealing with the emotional consequences of threats or attacks which took place long ago," she said.

Robbery offences were also up - for the fourth year running - with an annual increase of 12%, to 83,930 offences.

There were 670 cases of murder and manslaughter in 2019, excluding Greater Manchester Police, which is up 15 on the year before.

The total includes 39 people whose bodies were found in a lorry in Grays, Essex, in October.

These figures are a reminder that, until the coronavirus outbreak, urban areas were facing an epidemic of a different sort - knife crime.

The number of offences has increased by more than 20,000 in five years, with London now accounting for a third of them.

The rise appears to have been driven by a recent acceleration in the number of knifepoint robberies - the number has doubled in four years - as well as a surge in stabbings: together, there were 40,000 offences last year.

The figures do not include the period immediately before and during the lockdown, but statistics released by the National Police Chiefs' Council last week showed that serious assaults had fallen by 27% and robberies by 37%; it's thought knife crime will have followed a similar pattern.

The challenge for police and communities when people return to the streets will be to ensure the numbers don't return to the record levels seen last year.

Overall trends in crime remain broadly stable, according to the ONS, with the Crime Survey for England and Wales - which includes offences that are not reported to police - suggesting there was a fall of 5% compared with 2018.

Home Secretary Priti Patel described the fall as "encouraging" and a "step in the right direction".

However, Yvette Cooper, chairwoman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, called for a "comprehensive national strategy" to deal with knife crime.

"As the committee has warned, the police have been too heavily overstretched for some years and we need more police officers," she added.

The proportion of suspects charged with a crime in England and Wales, meanwhile, has fallen to a new record low.

Home Office figures show that only one in every 14 offences led to court proceedings - less than half the rate five years ago.

The charging rate has been in decline almost continuously since 2014-15, when changes were made to the collection of the data.

Last year, 7.1% of crimes resulted in a suspect being charged or ordered to appear in court.

The previous year it was 8.2% - and in 2014-15 it was 15.5%.

The percentage of crimes in which suspects were cautioned has also fallen, to 1.3% from 4.6% in 2014-15.

The main reason for the decline appears to be an increase in the number of victims who are co-operating with police investigations and prosecutions.

In 2014-15, there were 8.7% of cases where the victims did "not support action".

Last year, that figure had risen to 22.9%.

The lowest charging rate was for rape, with just one in every 66 offences recorded by police leading to a prosecution, or 1.5%.

In more than 40.6% of rape cases the victim did not support action being taken.

Dalston man fighting for life

A man in his 20s is fighting for his life after an assault in east London

The London Air Ambulance, paramedics and several police vehicles were scrambled to Trinity Close, off Dalston Lane, Hackney, at 12.25pm to reports of a man suffering a head injury.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital and is in a life-threatening condition.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and was taken into police custody.

Passer-by Mike Spezzano said he was on his way to the supermarket when he saw “half a dozen” police cars at the scene and the air ambulance landing.

He told the Standard: “One of my neighbours… said one minute there was a frenzy of activity surrounding the body which was outside on the road, the next it went quiet and those aiding moved away.”

The Metropolitan Police said are enquiries are ongoing.

A London Ambulance spokesperson said: “We sent a number of resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, two medics in fast response cars and an advanced paramedic practitioner, and we also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance. The first of our medics was at the scene in two and a half minutes.

“We treated a man for a head injury and he was taken by air to a major trauma centre in London.”

Man in 30s rushed to hospital after incident in Queens Crescent

A man in his 30s has been rushed to hospital after a shooting in Camden.

Police scrambled to Queens Crescent, at the junction of Prince of Wales Road, at around 7.40pm to reports of a shooting.

"A man in his 30s was taken to hospital," a local police spokesman said.

In an update at 10pm, the force said the victim's injuries have been deemed non-life-threatening.

Local resident Chris Atkins told the Standard the whole area was sealed off by police after the shooting.

He said: "Loads of people came out as the helicopter made such a racket.

"I went down to the corner of Ashdown Crescent and Queens Crescent, from there I could see about four to six police cars on the road itself.

"They were sealing the whole place off, there was lots of police."

Young man dies after 'being stabbed' in east London street

A young man has died after he was found injured in an east London street.

Police have launched an investigation after officers were called to Lambert Road in Newham at 10.26pm on Sunday.

They found a man aged in his mid-20s at the scene with apparent stab wounds. He was rushed to an east London hospital where he later died.

His next of kin have been informed.

The Met Police added that the incident is believed to have taken place on Freemasons Road near the junction with Perry Road, shortly before they were called.

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command have been informed and a crime scene is in place.

There have been no arrests at this time.

Drug dealers posing as joggers

Drug dealers are adopting new disguises so they can move around freeley during the coronavirus lockdown, a gang expert has said

Professor Simon Harding, director of the National Centre for Gang Research (NCGR), also said they were using fake NHS ID badges to sell their products under the Covid-19 restrictions.

The academic, based at the University of West London, stated that many dealers are “heeding government advice on social distancing” and adapting their business models to provide “drive-by sales” or letterbox drops to avoid infection.

The news comes as the National Crime Agency (NCA) revealed drug prices have increased under lockdown, with fewer drugs entering the UK.

“On one hand they really are heeding Government advice on social distancing, but at the same time it is business as usual and as people were panic-buying food, dealers were running bulk deals and selling lockdown party packs,” Prof Harding said.

“Vehicles are being used more often to carry out deals arranged by phone, with products thrown from windows and money chucked on the back seat to keep items clean.”

Prof Harding also revealed lockdown and travel restrictions are affecting the “county lines ” gang model – which sees young and vulnerable people used as couriers to move drugs and cash between cities and smaller towns.

The new tactics have also led to a reduction in so-called “cuckooing” – where gang members take over the home of a vulnerable person to cut, sort and deal drugs – because it is seen as too risky for health, he explained.

“Sending groups of young lads out to Southend-on-Sea by train to carry drugs is too risky now, so increasingly dealers are driving runners around, or hiring local people to do the job,” said Prof Harding.

“Street gangs are being forced to find new tactics, such as shifting grooming and recruitment online to social media.

“This means young people can become ensnared in dangerous gang activity from their phones while their families have no idea and that is a worry.”

Last month, (NCA) director general Lynn Owens said some drug dealers are trying to disguise themselves as key workers by wearing high visibility clothing or operating from supermarket car parks as they adapt to the coronavirus lockdown.

“They are having to find new ways of working and new networks,” Ms Owens said.

“Drug dealers moving illicit drugs are concerned about greater scrutiny as they recognise that with less people on the streets, they are more visible.”

Young man knifed to death as 'fight' breaks out in broad daylight in south London

A young man has been stabbed to death in broad daylight on a busy road in south London.

Police said they received reports of a number of males fighting shortly before officers found the man on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to Great Dover Street, a short distance from Borough station, shortly before 5.30pm.

The victim, believed to be 19, was discovered with stab injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service were also called as London's Air Ambulance landed nearby.

A Met Police spokesman said: "Formal identification and a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.

Murder probe after man found stabbed to death in an alleyway in Kent

Paramedics found the victim in Oakfield Lane, Dartford, on Thursday at 8.18am.

Police arrived at the location and said the forty-year-old man had injuries consistent with a stabbing. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are trying to piece together what happened before the man died and have arrested a suspect in connection with the incident.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "The man, in his forties, had injuries consistent with stab wounds.

“Officers have arrested a man, also in his forties, on suspicion of murder.

“Police remain at the scene and inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Man murdered in Haringey

Four people have been arrested after a 23-year-old man was stabbed to death in north London

Police scrambled to Haringey at around 8.13pm on Wednesday to reports of a man suffering stab injuries.

Officers and paramedics treated the victim at the scene, in Russell Road, before taking him to hospital.

He later died of his injuries. His next of kin have been informed.

A post-mortem examination and formal identification will be take place in due course.

Four men, aged in their 20s, have been arrested in connection with the investigation. They remain in custody.

DCI Simon Stancombe from the Homicide and Major Crime Command said: “My thoughts are first and foremost with this young man’s friends and family at this tragic time.

"I want to reassure them and the wider community that we are doing our utmost to understand what happened yesterday evening.

“Our investigation is in its very early stages and while we have four people in custody in connection with our enquiries, I am still appealing to the public to get in touch with anything they may have witnessed that evening.

“Specifically I am keen to identify where the attack took place, and the sequence of events that led to this young man’s death.

A teenager stabbed to death on a busy street was a talented footballer “in the wrong place at the wrong time”, his club said today



Francois Kablan, 19, was in the reserves for Harlow Town FC, scoring a hat-trick on his last appearance.

He was stabbed during a “vicious” brawl in Great Dover Street, Southwark, at around 5.20pm on Wednesday.

The teenager, described as a “great, talented kid”, died at the scene. Detectives are also investigating a separate fatal stabbing which took place just three hours later on an estate in South Tottenham.

Police were called to Russell Road, near Seven Sisters Tube station, at 8.13pm on Wednesday following reports of a man suffering stab injuries.

He died in hospital. Four men, all in their twenties, have been arrested in connection with the investigation.

A neighbour said: “There was someone screaming and within minutes police were here and we realised it was serious.

"We know the lad a bit. He was okay, a nice sort. It’s as if lockdown is over and all the kids are back on the streets looking for trouble.”

The two fatalities take the number of violent deaths in the capital to 47, equalling the total of killings at the same point last year.

Paying tribute to Mr Kablan, Harlow Town vice chairman Paul Wilson said: “Francois was very well-liked here. It’s very upsetting. We heard he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was no trouble and very popular.”

Reserve team manager Adam Connolly said: “Everyone at the club is heartbroken at the sudden passing of Francois, who had only just turned 19. Francois was a wonderful person and player.

"On his last game for Harlow, he scored a superb hat-trick to win us the game and walk away with the match ball.

"He was certainly a talented footballer and one who could have gone on to feature for the first team.”

A JustGiving page to pay for the teenager’s funeral has raised more than £2,000. Police arrested three males and a female close to the scene in connection with his death.

Knifepoint robbery
in east London

Police investigating a robbery in east London have released an image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the case



Officers were called to reports of a theft at Kingsland Shopping Centre in Dalston shortly before 9pm on April 24.

A man in his 20s subsequently reported to police that the suspect had approached him with a knife before leading him to a cash point.

The suspect then stole cash from the victim, and an oyster card from his wallet.

Enquiries into the incident are still ongoing and London's Metropolitan Police force has appealed for help in tracing the man shown in the image.

Detective Constable James Readman, said: “A victim has been approached by a man wielding a knife and forced to handover cash and his wallet in a busy shopping centre.

"I believe that this would have been witnessed by lots of members of the public. If you saw what happened, or if you can identify the man pictured, please do get in touch with us.”
